I think one of the cruelest things about the challenges she had with the etude is that she had to keep it together and still play the Scherzo (and she did well to my ear)
Man, the op. 10 no. 2 is probably the toughest of all 24 etudes and I can't even imagine what it must be like trying to get it back on track after a slip-up mid performance. Kudos to her for then getting through the Scherzo afterwards.
Yes, op.10 no.2 is the silent killer etude, it requires supreme coordination between the weakest 3,4 and 5th fingers, and it's so easy it mess it up especially when you're nervous. It's an amazing training piece for the weaker RH fingers.
The etude was rough to watch but she IS still a great musician. Unfortunately though since she's born in 1991 there won't be any more attempt to participate in the Chopin Competition :-(
I hate that kind of things. That only make people feel that they have lost the train to be succesful. I agree that most found themselves at 30s and it's really unfair that in most jobs, artistic stuff, sports, etc, you need to have a certain age instead of focusing on your skills.

Obviously concert organizers and recording executives didn't care about a mistake that could happen to anyone at competitions - they endure a lot of stress at these events. It makes me so terribly sad to see this unfortunate accident happen to such a wonderful pianist. But it's incredible how she continued with the scherzo, sending a message to the audience and aspiring pianists alike. If she is mourning her mistake, she should be proud of how she resolved herself to play the next piece. I hope she finds other opportunities to make use of her amazing skills. @@LachlanTyrrell2003I think they’re saying it isn’t too hard for her, as she is a professional.
I also applaud her for keeping her composure and repeated until she can continue. Lapse of memory in a recital is most frightening, but in no way is indicative of the performer’s talent or artistry. Bravo Anastasia!
Very well said!!
She showed great courage. I would have wet myself and run off sobbing before even trying the scherzo. It’s not suffering the disaster that matters, but how one deals with it and she did.
Congrats to her for keeping a straight head and carrying on... 99% of people will never come close to experiencing the mind-shattering nerves these youths go through in this competition. She still played the scherzo and I bet it felt liberating to perform it knowing all was lost at that point.
I don't think it would have felt liberating. The negative emotion must have been just about overwhelming and I suspect it took every last ounce of energy and self-control for her to hold it together to the end. In that respect she has more than all of us. You don't judge a performer by their worst performance. She's talented, it was a matter of nerves and occasion, and she's strong enough to go on and do well.

I sincerely respect her for playing the song until the end without crying or running away. 10-2 is the most difficult and dangerous etude, so I can't imagine how scary it would be to play it at a Chopin competition.
She's a really great performer.
The Nocturne and Scherzo were really beautiful and wonderful.

Rare to see such a breakdown in the Chopin competition but I was impressed by how she managed to calm herself and play the Scherzo right after
Most likely due to nerves. Technically, she could manage it.
@@baoluan1288 It is a typical problem with 10-2, if one is nervous, the fingers will lock-up like that. She was being ambitious playing 10-2, so she needs to accept the consequences. Had she played other etude, this problem might not happen.

Cognitive lapses happen to about everybody, from amateurs to professionals with years of experience.
