Sissel Kyrkjebø performing "O mio babbino caro" ("Oh my dear Papa”) at a TV-concert in Norway. The soprano aria is from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. It provides an interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and love in contrast with the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing, and feuding in medieval Florence. It provides the only set-piece in the through-composed opera. The aria was first performed at the premiere of Gianni Schicchi on 14 December 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York by the popular Edwardian English soprano Florence Easton. It is frequently performed in concerts and as an encore in recitals by many popular and crossover singers.

It was noted by another commentator that when Sissel performs a song, she doesn't just SING it, she PERFORMS it - she becomes the song !! Like a chameleon, she takes upon herself the spirit, the heart and the meaning of the song - and while she is performing it - she is transformed and BECOMES the song.
This came to me one day as I was meditating upon how she can do such a phenomenal job on such a wide variety of songs - from inspirational to sensual and seductive - and do them ALL with absolute sincerity and inspiration. She isn't acting or pretending (as I once speculated) -- she is living and experiencing the SPIRIT of the song that she is performing !!

As SO MANY have proclaimed, if God has clothed an angel in flesh and blood and sent her to live among us, then SURELY Sissel qualifies. Such an unearthly, angelic voice and personage - such beauty, grace, charm and charisma are not to be found in many here among us !!
