Cool. Love both of those solos in the song. They're just timeless. Interesting history on the tone, just the right amount of raunchiness and grit too. Well explained solos, though I'm more likely to just go on happily listening and not actually playing them as I'm not a guitar player, but am interested on how they are created.
Hello Jamie, nice work, thanks ! I was remembering this on Blackstar web site "JAMIE HUMPHRIES - INDIE BRITPOP USING ID:30TVP" and was disappointed seeing it is no more available, could we get it from some other place ? Could you please remember me the chords you were using in this small video for beginners ?
Thats the next practice solo for me sorted then !! Can you believe I once stood next to Elliott Randall at a guitar show without a clue who he was ... .oh wait you probably can :) Great Video Jamie.
Ha. I had to learn this song/solos in 1974 by dropping the needle on my LP several hundred times in just the right place. Ruined that copy. It was easier and quicker than rewinding and playing back my reel-to-reel! Looks like I got it about 98% right! At least 500 audiences thought so :)
@@nxindy I would imagine it was Elliott. I thought I spoke about this in the video. He's. friend of mine. We did full break down on Produce Like Pro which may have more info
Hi Kevin, This lesson was part of a video on Produce Like A Pro where Elliot Randell was interviewed. He played the intro, middle solo and outro. Head over PLAP. Jeff did not play the solos.
Here’s the interview with Jeff at 10:30 into interview. Jeff says Elliot wrote the lick but he played it on the recording. ua-cam.com/video/hRykql0iZhU/v-deo.html
@SixStringAlliance Don't know why some people think Skunk played any of the solo. Baxter's live renditions were nothing like Elliott's original solo. You've only got to watch the 2019 reunion gig to immediately hear that it's Elliott's solo throughout.
Elliot Randall lives in London England. When the band play in London, I have seen Elliot join them on stage for this track and have seen Elliot play the intro.
Very cool, but this doesn't sound like the recording at all. I think it was probably done on the middle pickup of a strat. Or at least it sounds that way.
Thanks for the comment. We spoke at length with Elliott over on Produce Like A Pro, and copied what he did with the gear available. It was the neck humbucker of his strat into an Ampeg bass amp, 100%. I feel I got a pretty close approximation, even Elliott felt that way about my version.
@@SixStringAlliance Well your both wrong - Oh wait a minute.... It's probably my monitor or the UA-cam recording of the original could be muffled or something. Thanks for the response.
This is undoubtedly one of Steely Dan’s best loved tracks. What other stand out tracks are in their catalogue?
So many!! This is a personal; favourite of course! Elliott is a wonderful player and an amazing guy!
Kid Charlemagne. Larry Carlton’s solo is amazing and the tone is like butter
Bodhisattva
Let us not forget Peg, with the awesome solo by Jay Graydon!
Gold and great story
Agreed 100%!
Thanks James!
Thanks Warren
Thanks Frank!
Jamie once again you've hit it out of the park! Thanks ever so much for the incredible breakdown and contributing such amazing content!
Haha just saw my typo! I think I'll leave it as HOT!
Hahahaha perfect!! Thanks again Warren, a challenging video!!
@@SixStringAlliance Yes, indeed!
@Frank Lee had to be done!

Wow that was filmed years ago. Sadly I don’t have anything to do with this anymore. I think the videos may have been removed.

How do you get that tone? I read he played through an ampeg svt bass amp with his strat. Did he not use a pedal to get that fuzz sound
If you watch the full video I talk about the tone. I did it the same way Randell did, but with modelling.
Ok

Great stuff!! It’s a fiddly solo to nail.
@@SixStringAlliance so if it was a one take thing, who else played on the harmony double lead parts?

Jamie just watched an interview with Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and he said he played intro and outro and Elliot played the middle solo.
