I used to have too much fun fishing for when I was a kid in Pryor Creek just run string through corn and they'll bite it and roll and wrapped around their bill no hook necessary
When I lived in North Carolina we would tie a white washcloth on a wire leader and cast out for the gar, they would roll and twist-up in that washcloth then the fight was on. Most of them we would let go unharmed. Some we would rap in mud, lay them belly down in a fire and then crack the mud off at and finger pick the meat out of the back. When they were fully cooked. Some we would cut the heads off and nail them onto the side of the barn when they dried they were really cool looking
I'm surprised that the Mississippi River doesn't produce the biggest gator gar. Those damn things would eat every bass in Florida if they set them loose here.
it's actually a good thing that they eat bass.cause they keep bass at stable numbers causing fewer bass but also bigger bass. if bass populations aren't controlled they will breed till there are just tiny babies from lack of food to support large bass.
Great video. Good luck Kentuckians!By the way, do you think the Alligator Gar, the larger ones, could help eliminate the Asian Carp in the Illinois River?
They're also being reintroduced into Illinois: www.dnr.illinois.gov/news/Pages/IDNR-Stocks-Alligator-Gar-as-Part-of-Reintroduction-Program.aspx But they are not expected to control Asian carp.
Alligator gars here in Louisiana are everywhere including canals in the city canals! They flourish down here. They have been eating the carp in the canals but carp reproduce like rabbits it's crazy how they take over everything! Just down my street in the canal I've been seeing 5 to 10 lbs carp and bunches of them! And they eat anything! I've seen bass attacking them I'm guessing that they were protecting their young! Even big perch attack the Carp!
I remember watching a saturday morning fishing show in Ohio with them actually fishing for Gar. Been a bucket fish fishery for me ever since (45 years ago) They kill these fish in Texas as they consider them a pest. Pretty sad though.

@@bencrain7083 I guess you like unhealthy ecosystems and tiny fish if you consider a native top predator to be a bad thing. cause the truth is they don't eat all the fish.they control the population.meaning they prevent over population. bass in several areas have become extremely over populated.resulting in them becoming smaller due to not getting enough food to grow and not having the space to grow.
id say its working as one was shot with bow down on the wabash river where we never had them. shot on the IL side of the wabash river below terre haute indiana

Wonderful! Great to know! They need to be saved. God Bless
Hey I've been to Tupelo and seen them at the hatchery!
I used to have too much fun fishing for when I was a kid in Pryor Creek just run string through corn and they'll bite it and roll and wrapped around their bill no hook necessary
10 years old wow, hope this helped but sadly it must not have since the damn carp are still taking over
If only south africa cared as much as you guys
When I lived in North Carolina we would tie a white washcloth on a wire leader and cast out for the gar, they would roll and twist-up in that washcloth then the fight was on. Most of them we would let go unharmed. Some we would rap in mud, lay them belly down in a fire and then crack the mud off at and finger pick the meat out of the back. When they were fully cooked. Some we would cut the heads off and nail them onto the side of the barn when they dried they were really cool looking
How can such a cute little fishy turn into a nightmare like that 😔
I'm surprised that the Mississippi River doesn't produce the biggest gator gar. Those damn things would eat every bass in Florida if they set them loose here.
They're already there and have been for a long time.
it's actually a good thing that they eat bass.cause they keep bass at stable numbers causing fewer bass but also bigger bass.
if bass populations aren't controlled they will breed till there are just tiny babies from lack of food to support large bass.
Alligator gar have been in their native waters of Florida for ever
Great video. Good luck Kentuckians!By the way, do you think the Alligator Gar, the larger ones, could help eliminate the Asian Carp in the Illinois River?
They're also being reintroduced into Illinois: www.dnr.illinois.gov/news/Pages/IDNR-Stocks-Alligator-Gar-as-Part-of-Reintroduction-Program.aspx
But they are not expected to control Asian carp.
I've caught alligator gar. They are mean-looking!
It's been 11 years how did it go?
I wonder if they survived that fall from truck through that hose..!!??
I guess you guys are the experts but there's never been a shortage of gar where I've fished in KY.
Are they gator gar or another species of gar?
I remember watching a saturday morning fishing show in Ohio with them actually fishing for Gar.
Been a bucket fish fishery for me ever since (45 years ago)
They kill these fish in Texas as they consider them a pest.
Pretty sad though.
Well it's been 9 years since this video was uploaded, Did the plantings work? have they taken hold?
I live in tn and In the little pigeon river in Sevierville TN they are like 5 foot long over populated back I think in the 80s they had to go in and clean some out but didn't help any at all I have been on the back fishing and see them go past me 5 and a half foot long no joke you can look it up and there all In the river
I need to visit Kentucky.
Wonderful stuff. I love native fish that eat invasive species.
They eat every fish not only the invasive one's
@@bencrain7083 I guess you like unhealthy ecosystems and tiny fish if you consider a native top predator to be a bad thing.
cause the truth is they don't eat all the fish.they control the population.meaning they prevent over population.
bass in several areas have become extremely over populated.resulting in them becoming smaller due to not getting enough food to grow and not having the space to grow.
This is 10 years ago, UA-cam recommended this today
anyone watching in 21st century?
id say its working as one was shot with bow down on the wabash river where we never had them. shot on the IL side of the wabash river below terre haute indiana
what do they taste like? is the meat dark or light?
If you want them to survive, you must change the angling tactics.
Delayed strikes = dead fish.
I've caught plenty in Thailand with barbless single hooks and immediate strikes.
its america... the ablgers there dont care about the well being of the fish
I had ZERO CLUE that alligator gar were in the Mississippi River. Use them to get rid of those damn carp!
grass gar, needle nose gar and the alligator gar.....
WE NEED AN UPDATE
