  • In today's video Paul Drew and James Ivey from The Studio Rats, check out and ruin James's new Peavey 5150 Block Letter Amp.
    We are currently buying a whole bunch of Iconic guitar amps to add to our Tonex and Quad Cortex amp capture collection, unfortunately, we blew this up before we could get around to it.
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    That's note a block letter. Its the second series 5150 with the signature on it.
    I've had one for over 20 years and it's blows every year or two without fail.

    Screen grid resistor on mine just fried on one side of the power section. Works fine now but yeah these things are showing their age if they haven’t been serviced regularly. Still love it but it is a 30+ year old amp with some components that aren’t terrible but aren’t the best. 30+ years on original components especially electrolytic caps is asking too much of most any amp though regardless of how well it’s built or not. Glad to hear you’re getting it fixed though, these are modern classics in my opinion.

    One of the secrets sauces from the 90s is to run it with a rackmount BBE Sonic Maximizer in the effects loop. Especially if using the original 5150 cab with those horrible stock speakers.

    Paul and James I hope you read this and it helps you out. Had this happen to me on a 6505 Check the Electrolytic Capacitors I don't remember which locations it was (I think it was C33, C37 and C36) but I had two of them go bad so I replaced them all doesn't hurt that if one or two go bad then replace them all to ward off the same thing happening again. It is not uncommon but it's also not really a problem thats really that common. Good Luck guys. I love your vids. Would love to see a video and hear your thoughts on the Engl Gigmaster 15 or the 30.

    At least while there was a sound it was a good sound! Peavey is really an underappreciated amp company. I own a Peavey JSX and it does a similar thing to the 5150 with its gain but it has an actual clean channel, and is my favorite amp I’ve owned. If you have an opportunity to check one out that might make for a good video. I did have to get mine recapped, though, so look out!

    • @godsinbox

      peavey were rubbish, if you exclude 5150, and I can tell you they were unaffordable at the time (1990s).
      BTW you can mod the clean channel of the 5150 series amps by cutting just one capacitor to make them clean.

At least it can be serviced unlike most of the digital crap today that just will turn into landfill. Did you even have it checked out before turning it on?

      Technically not a block letter but literally the same amp as a block letter despite rumors. Zero difference between the two. James Brown dispels the myth that they’re different amps/changes in the circuit on ToneTalk.

    • @jamescuttsmusicjcm5013
      @jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 2 місяці тому

      @@K707OR30 that is debatable as it turns out the company producing some stock did apparently make some changes without telling peavey. So from peavey perspective, no nothing had changed. Either way... do I think it matters that much? Nah. Lets be honest. These amps are made with components that have a 5-10% tolerance rating, so no two of these amps would sound exactly alike even if they were from the same exact batch. In any case, we still cannot get around the fact that it is not a block letter. That is all I was pointing out. Lol.

    • @K707OR30
      @K707OR30 2 місяці тому

      @@jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 fair enough if true and yes you’re right on component spec, and there’s even more drift with age. but I guess my original point should’ve been more around whether it even matters. I have a block letter but personally couldn’t care less if it was a signature or if it was a 6505, or even the “1992 original” peavey is now making. they’re all original spec 5150s to me. I guess I just never really understood why everyone has a boner for the block letter and I own one even.

  • @Themanincumbent

    That’s not how to blow up an amp. I have a Marshall 2204 I bought in 1979 and it always sounded better and louder than all my mates Marshall’s. When the master was on 4 it sounded like other Marshall’s on 10. Unfortunately if I put the volume above 5 it would catch fire( output transformer even though it was with a stock 4x12 that was matched). So end of every gig I would walk up the master for a lively gig ending. Spent a small fortune on output transformers though. Good news now I am old and cured of my wayward antics I sent the amp to Marshall for proper repairs and it now sounds like all the other classic jmp mk2’s which suits me just fine in my old age.

    Old amps with cheap components and panel board. They weren't made to last for decades, were industrial products - especially Peavey -. The 5150's external house is made out of MDF, internal with the cheapest iron ever - it rusts! -. They are not heavy because the overwound transformers, but because the crapest elements are used.
    However it might be just a power amp. But for sure it has a hype that's way to big. You can find a lot of better made amps made nowaday.

  • @TheGgreen100
    @TheGgreen100 2 місяці тому +1

    Here's a tip. Modern high gain amps (yes modern, the 5150 is an early 90's amp with a MODERN design) don't need to be cranked to 6 or 8 on the master dial. That's stupid. It's not a plexi. All of its tone and gain happens in the preamp. Most poweramps in modern high gain amps are meant to be run relatively clean, like a good stereo to amplify the preamp. If you're going to crank it, then crank it to maybe 3 or 4. That's about as loud as the volume goes. Anything higher than that isn't going to make it louder, it's just going to distort and stress the power tubes more, which this amp is not really voiced or designed for. Again, it's not a plexi. Even pro metal producers who record these things all the time don't turn the master volume higher than 3 or 4. Use your head and use your ears. You could easily hear the poweramp distortion, which sounds very different than 5150's preamp distortion, coming through in the video. Don't do that.

    • @TheStudioRats
      @TheStudioRats  2 місяці тому

      I’m going to pretty much disagree with everything you’ve said. This is a 120watt amp the power tubes play a massive roll in the tone of this amp that is meant to be turned up to get the best out of it.

    • @TheGgreen100
      @TheGgreen100 2 місяці тому +1

      @@TheStudioRats I noticed my reply to this comment has been deleted. I'll repeat what I said in case it was deleted accidentally: Eddie himself didn't dial his 5150's volume much above 4. James Brown, designer of the 5150, has talked about how the 5150 wasn't voiced or designed to be cranked louder than that because again, the amp wasn't really voiced for poweramp distortion. When you get it back from the shop, try sticking with low poweramp volume and see how great this amp can sound that way.

    • @godsinbox
      @godsinbox 2 місяці тому

      @@TheGgreen100 I agree with your comments, the power amp design is TERRIBLE in these amps, the tube bias voltage is run far too cold to sound good. You can change every valve in these amps without biasing, which is stupid. It is practically SS in design... Listening yet @TheStudioRats?

    Block Letter “era” but not a true block letter…. How are you sitting 3 feet from a 5150 and not getting uncontrolled feedback? You probably didn’t cook the amp, you probably just fried the easily friable JJ or GT or Mesa tubes that are likely in there…. I put in some vintage 1950s ElectroHarmonix 12AX7s in mine that i pulled from a Dynaco stereo tuner and this amp is indestructible….Remember guys, Eddie tested this amp by getting it to feedback in a room and letting it feed back for a week!!! I highly doubt your 3 minutes of noodling killed the amp… Junk tubes = tons of problems for you and nice cheap (or free) killer amps for me on the used market.

    And yeah, they are not that reliable. Especially the older ones that have seen years of abuse.
    You might as well send it off to a good amp tech, so he can go through it. It probably needs a re-cap job,
    and other work. You can buy a new version, but they are all "made in China" now. Pity.
