I laughed so hard at the "The more you know..." part :)
Thank you so much for this series of videos! I have had my ocarina for 5 days, but with your help I have learned 8 songs AND how to read sheet music. I have learned more from you that I ever did in all the voice and piano lessons I went to growing up. Thank you for being so nice. You don't come across as condescending or like a "know it all", which makes it extremely pleasant to watch you.
New video from you, and eating dinner. Perfect way to finish a day.
How was your dinner?
Oh my god man, you are the best ocarina teacher in the internet. Thank you for all your videos!
Wow, I didn't know that about STL. Glad I learned that prior to making a buy based on getting a tenor. Thanks David!
Weasel Guts STL’s Tenor ocarinas have the same range as an Alto from another brand.
Thanks for another video David!
Honestly, this series breeds and raises ocarina players. (Even if they are not that popular, they do however constribute greatly!)
4:49 THANK YOU!
These categories have always confused me lol but this video was really helpful! As a side note I really like the new video system and the consistent videos coming from it. Keep up the good work!!
I'm so glad OcTalk is coming back
Spent my whole day cooking and practicing for the "Budiro Calling Contest".... Totally wiped but this made my day. Thanks as always! :)
Am I the only one who thinks that the Asian system is by far the most straightforward for anyone to understand and therefore the best.... *hides behind couch from all the Italians*
You may have been gone for a while, but your delivery is spot on, David. Great videos so far; and happy birthday ;D,
I remember when i was just starting college and your videos got me into Ocarinas! :3 Its been 4 years since I've played. But, now that I am close to finishing my studies, I can start again!! I am glad you are still going strong with your videos! Keep up the awesome work!
Could you continue your previous series on OcTalk where you explained how to do vibrato on ocarina?
Informative video for someone wanting to learn more about ocarinas! I really appreciate it!
No links to further information in the description yet? I'll check back later!
Very informative. Thanks for the insight, David. I agree with A.M that the Asian system seems the simplest and easiest to understand since words like soprano, alto and bass tell me more about the pitch I can expect from the ocarina than a number system does. I have gotten used to the Italian system though I don't like the STL nomenclature system. My Aria SG is a soprano to me no matter what they say about it being an alto. LOL
Pandorado 100 sane here with the STL naming system. My Zelda 12-hole has the range of an alto C, but it’s classified as a “Tenor”, which is misleading. Some of the other weird naming cases come with the Fire and Lightning Element ocarinas, where they’re classified as Alto but they sound like sopranos
I'm in love with the "new" OcTalk!!
Hey David, it would be cool if you could do an OcTalk on either time signatures or triplets. And if you do, please go more into depth than just common time or 8th note triplets. Keep up the good work and don't stop making music.
Teach us your secret to making the ocarina sound so crisp.
Ryan Mattox I know what it is. 10 years of pure practise.
Helpful, thanks!
Oh my gosh. Thank you for this. :)
Also I apologize for leaving another post. But how do you get your music? Because I try to transpose other music to fit the ocarina, but am limited do to my 12 holes range. So do you have any ideas or methods on how to make songs more playable on the ocarina?
I like your TARDIS poster :3
not only does STL call their alto C ocarina a tenor C ocarina, the factory what makes that ocarina may stamp it an alto C ocarina.
So my stlocarinas are alto? I feel betrayed! LOL
Me too! xD
That's the reason why it sound so high... (for me)
Rey A. Gonzalez still ocarinas are great
David! I thought of you just now. Why? I am at the beginning of Django Unchained and right after the two "brothers" die (and they arrive at the town), I hear ocarinas! Can you confirm?
Is there a difference in tone with ocarinas made of different materials?
Mermaid Jaffa sometimes.
I would imagine so, i dont have much experience with Ocarinas (yet) but I do play other woodwind instruments, and even a change of Reed material can change the tone of your instrument
can't wait for the majora's mask video!
Omg, I just saw JDF! He's looking for you! XD

Haha, anyways, I think you did very well with the description. No made up words, lol.
Jumping on 6 years later, but a request to ask.
Since this has vital names of key figures who shaped the history of ocarinas, would you consider making subs for this video, so we can see the correct spelling and follow up on our own, please?
I can kinda suss out the Japanese name but couldn't figure out that Italian dude and would like to learn from here and share onto others. :)
Yep, I believe this video was scripted, so I’ll try to add them this week 😉
i think STL also calls their soprano F an alto F... so there's that.
noticed the naming thing by STL, when they stated their tennor C was tuned from A4 to F6, I was thinking, "um, isnt that an alto range not tennor?" but whats in a name right?
What is a Major C ocarina? (There is on STL)
If you mean the ocarina of time replica, I guess that it's a Alto C ocarina(in this weird case(4:48)).
I just got my ocarina today and I want to buy your book on your website, but I want to know if the songs can be played by beginners...???
Where is the old OcTalk intro song? :(
Could you please check out Ohuhu ocarinas? I trust your opinion and I just got started in ocarina playing. It's the only one I have and I would like to know if I bought a decent starter instrument or a very pretty desk piece
I could check them out. Do you have a website link?
@@DavidErickRamos I just ordered mine off of Amazon
www.amazon.com/Ohuhu-Ocarina-Ocarinas-Triforce-Protective/dp/B0148EQYA8/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc1_0?cv_ct_cx=ocarina&keywords=ocarina&pd_rd_i=B0148EQYA8&pd_rd_r=ccec3572-b1eb-4f32-8006-f6e015192f19&pd_rd_w=Agm7R&pd_rd_wg=aKFfX&pf_rd_p=b6e10720-6d11-4d9c-b925-48485c46d42e&pf_rd_r=3WFDPD23WBJG1TXXJGY5&psc=1&qid=1583865616
So what it's a C major (tenor) ocarina? An C3?
Malaysia got this ocarina?
what is the best ocarina to buy or to purchased which is the best
So my tenor c ocarina is an Alto C I feel betrayed but better knowing where is fits in the classification of ocarina thanks
yay!
But what are the rages of notes for each ocarina?
if shopping online the range is usually mentioned on the product page, for example a alto C (stl tennor C) is A4 to F6
is there any reason why tenor is skipped in the naming convention? i mean why call it a contrabass when you can just call it a bass and call the bass a tenor; soprano, alto, tenor, and bass
Short answer: the maker who established the nomenclature in the early 20th century decided not to use it. Long answer: ua-cam.com/video/9iQTOoDNxi0/v-deo.htmlsi=luIbHylLHE3MdNJm
@@DavidErickRamos thank you so much, that clears up a lot of questions 😅
What's the ocarina used in Zelda? Alto C?
That’s correct!
@@DavidErickRamos great! Thanks!
Just bought my first ocarina today, Alto C as well, and I was curious
Hey David, I'm gonna make a full ocarina course in portuguese for whoever lives in Brazil, or any else who can understand the language.
So I was wondering, Can I call it Octalk? I will obviously be making references to you and putting links to your channel and videos.
You think it's ok if I use the same name?
( post a comment if you are from latin america, xD )
That's awesome about the course! But I don't think it would be a good idea to call it the same thing since it may cause some confusion :/ Maybe people could help recommend a new name?
David Erick Ramos - Ocarina I want to meet you and play some ocarina music with you because I have some ocarinas. My STL Zelda 12-hole is my favorite out of the 10 that I have.
Why is it weird to have a tenor?
It seems so backwards to have a range of instruments go: soprano, alto, bass, contrabass. Why miss contralto, tenor, baritone?
It's not that it's weird, but only adding to the confusion when there's already so much confusion of individual makers coming up with their own classification systems. It's also ironic considering that STL imports all their ocarinas from A company called TNG in China and TNG also calls it an Alto C!
David Erick Ramos
is there any place where a person can get an actual Ocarina in tenor? I have been wanting to get one got the stl plastic tenor. now that I know it is not a tenor. that is very upsetting. any help you can offer would be fantastic
AboriginalSoul Well, "tenor" can cover a wide range -- Irish tenors sing as high as some sopranos! :) What range do you want, specifically? Higher or lower than the alto?
razzleberrycat I would want something lower than an alto.but not as low as a bass. seems the very idea of a Tenor ocarina is very elusive. smh
AboriginalSoul I would suggest an Alto G or Alto F, which is about half an octave lower than Alto, and half an octave higher than Bass. I have an Alto F that sounds to ME like Simba from The Lion King's voice range! :) (If buying from STL, it would be called Tenor F or G I imagine.)
Hi, David. I have a question. I'm writing a piece for a 12 hole ocarina. It spans from low C to high G, but I recently realized that 12 hole ocarinas in C only go up to high F. I want it to be playable on a 12 hole ocarina because it's the most common one and I want any ocarina owner to be able to play it, but I feel like changing that high G will take away from the piece. Is there a way to play high G on a 12 hole ocarina or do I have to make that choise?
עמית משיח I don’t think that a high G on a 12-hole C ocarina is possible, but try a double ocarina for extended range
My comment got messed up by your name changing my cursor position.
ZeldaACFan17 I ended up changing the high G to a high E and it wasn't so bad.
What is the difference between the asian and european fingering system?
But...what about Tenor ocarinas?
Sedi Ocarina he explained tenor ocarinas in the video. Watch until the end.
No. He is asking what their tenor C (based on other brands) is called. I would say STL calls it a bass, but other brands would call it a tenor.
I guess recorders are never going to be replaced by ocarinas :(
Teach ocarina road
Útil gracias.
my friend, the "L" is Sol is silent, so the proper pronunciation would be "So". just trying to help out :)
+Seth Dempsey I'm italian and I have almost 17 years of experience with my instrument (accordion). Your comment isn't completely right, because the L in SOL is silent only when you pronounce all the notes an it sounds like "Doremifasolasido" but when you pronounce it alone or not making a scale with your voice the correct pronuntiation is SOL :)
P.S.-Hope the grammar is correct ;)
Hey man, thanks a lot!!!!
"back in the 1850's when the first Ocarina's were developed"
This statement is misleading. A person would come away thinking the ocarina was invented in the 1850's by Giuseppe, which is false.
Yes, Giuseppe did pioneer the instrument by modernizing it, however this is an ancient instrument. It goes back to ancient civilizations. Notably Chinese and Mesoamerican cultures.
Ex: Maya, Aztecs.
It dates back over 12,000 years.
If you’re talking about “vessel flutes”, you would be correct. But the “ocarina” is a specific type of vessel flute that was indeed invented by Donati. Not every vessel flute is an ocarina, but every ocarina is a vessel flute 😉
@DavidErickRamos That's a fair argument. It would be nice to have that distinction in the video as well though. That is my main point.
The more you know! Lol
Haha. STL, you crazy people you.
