  • Tandy Special thanks to #PCBWay for making #SEPTANDY come early this year. You can visit pcbway.com and order these boards to upgrade your Tandy or even start a side business selling pre-made boards.
    This upgrade adds 512k of RAM, a Compact Flash IDE (XT-IDE), and a serial port to the Tandy 1000 EX/HX computers. If you own this machine, you absolutely want to do this upgrade. Special thanks to Rob for providing the board files and the code. github.com/rkrenicki/Tandy-EX...

    My school purchased about 14 of these for their computer classes back in the late 80's. They previously had TI-99/4A and I had a Coleco Adam at home. So, this was my first exposure to the PC world. I was absolutely amazed. I loved the 3-voice sound and 16-color low res graphics. I have a Tandy 1000 HX today and still love to mess with it once in a while.

      That's so awesome. It's funny because I've been playing around with all the computers you mentioned. I have a coleco Adam and a Bazilian pieces that I'm about to fix... hopefully... And I just started messing around with the TI-99 for the first time since the '80s. Fun stuff. The Tandy 1000 was my childhood. At the time computers were increasing in power so fast and I always felt a little left behind... But in hindsight I am so grateful for all the things I learned on that machine.

      I think that's the first time I've ever seen someone mention the Adam. The Adam was actually my first computer - I got it for my 11th birthday, but I outgrew that pretty quickly and my dad ended up getting me a 1000 EX that Christmas. Though I half think that he got the Tandy so that I wouldn't use the printer that came with the Adam. Man, was that thing loud.

    It changed my life too. First PC I had and learned to use, maxed it out with every card and an HD as well. Got onto PC-Link, went on to work some chat rooms, and onto AOL, etc. Played so many Sierra games for so many hrs. It led me down the path of using computers, getting into IT, and onto an 20 yr career in Implementation, Support, then Quality Assurance, and on into DevOps doing CI and CD. It all started with the EX. Thanks for this video, really makes me want to get an old EX back again.

      Fun memories. It's weird, but the EX/HX seem to generally be some of the more expensive Tandys on Ebay. Not because they were the best, but because everyone had them as a kid.

      I have so many fond memories of this machine. I didn't fully appreciate it at the time because there was always something better and I wanted a hard drive etc. But the reality is that learning how to deal with limitations is a skill that has served me pretty well my whole life.

    It's great that your parents got you a tool that can play games rather than just a toy! Not knocking consoles, really, I love them, but I love them a LOT more when there are already computers in the household. And back then that was not a given.
    Comment on soldering the sockets--I keep a range of sacrificial ICs around to put into sockets while I solder them, especially the larger ones like 28 and 40 pin, but for the smaller ones, too, when I get ones with dodgy pins. I mark the backs of the ICs so that I know they're not working ICs (they're pulls from repair jobs), put them into the socket when the socket is set into its vias (to avoid perforating my fingertips) then solder with everything held securely and no worries about frying a chip if I linger on a solder joint.
    Your board makes me wish I still have an EX or HX! I loved the Tandy enhancements to CGA.

    • @AnotherMaker
      @AnotherMaker  2 роки тому

      Yeah. I played a lot of games on the EX, but in doing that, I learned a ton about PCs in general. It was an amazing gift. The sacrificial chips thing is a brilliant idea. I need to do that.
      And yeah. The EX/HX are really nostalgic for me. It's kind of funny to me today that I ever typed on that keyboard though :)

    Thanks for featuring my design! I am glad to see that people are still getting excited about the Tandy EX/HX computers!
    I have been meaning to write up the directions, but the notch in the CF adapter is specifically to allow for the mounting tab between the adapter and the backplate. I took some photos, but never wrote up the PDF. I suppose I should finally do that, hah!
    I am no longer building these myself, as Ive moved on to different projects.. but I will continue to support those who do make these themselves!

      You are the man. I absolutely love your designs. I wish I had seen the v2 board before I did this one, but this is more than enough for my needs. I really appreciate everything you give to the community. I did figure out what the notch was for when I went to "really" put the machine together. Again, I can't thank you enough for all you do to keep improving this stuff.

    Very cool. I've always wanted a 1000HX since I saw someone elsewhere on UA-cam cover it in great detail. By the way, 12:52 onward proves I don't have photosensitive epilepsy.

    I know I'm going to get laughed for asking this question. But how do I order the board through PCBway? I assume you upload the gerber files, but there's a list of other files on the github too and some look important. I.e 3-in-1-cache.lib. does all that get uploaded too? I hate to say it, being that this was my first computer and I've worked on computers since I was ten and I'm 40 now. But I am very confused.

    • @AnotherMaker
      @AnotherMaker  6 місяців тому

      I try to use the pcbway shared projects if they're available. I don't remember on this one. If you have to manually upload to pcbw, there is a button called "quick order pcb" that is WAY easier and sets all the defaults based on the gerber itself.
