  • MORE 4G63 DSM MPI WIRING DETAILS BELOW:
    In this video I show you how to wire a 1G DSM 4G63 MPI relay. A 1G DSM includes the 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and Plymouth Laser. When doing a 4G63 turbo engine swap into another car, this MPI relay is usually the most confusing part of the wiring harness. I do my best to show you what the MPI relay does, and how to properly wire it.
    4G63 Wiring Diagrams Here: www.hotrodwiki.com/index.php?...
    4G63 MPI Wires:
    - Pin 1 - Empty.
    - Pin 2 - Black w/ green stripe - Goes to the fuel pump from the MPI relay. Many people rewire their fuel pump with 8 gauge wire to make sure it has a strong battery-fed power feed. If doing this, you can use this factory black w/ green stripe on pin 86 of a Bosch relay. Learn how to properly hard wire your fuel pump in this video: • How to Wire a 5 Pin Au...
    - Pin 3 - Black w/ white stripe - Should be given Ignition power. This wire on the MPI relay also goes to pin 110 at the ECU, the Ignition Coil and Power Transistor.
    - Pin 4 - Red wire - Goes to Pin 107 and 102 on the ECU. It also jumps over to Pin 5 on the MPI relay, and sends power to the Mass Airflow Sensor, CAS, Wastegate Solenoid, ISC, O2 Sensor, Injector Resistor, Purge Control Solenoid, Fuel Pressure Solenoid, and EGR Solenoid.
    - Pin 5 - Connects to Pin 4 on the MPI relay
    - Pin 6 - Black wire - Goes to ground.
    - Pin 7 - White w/ red stripe - goes to pin 56 at the ECU
    - Pin 8 - Black w/ blue stripe - Goes to Pin 63 and 66 at the ECU.
    - Pin 9 - Black w/ yellow stripe - This Goes to Pin 108 at the ECU AND the small wire on the engine's starter relay. This should ONLY be given power when the engine is cranking from the starter. The moment you let go of the key (when the engine starts up), this wire should go dead.
    - Pin 10 - Black w/ red stripe - This should go to a 20A fuse fed right off the battery.

    Jeremy, my question is about the white connector with the red wire with the black tracer at 1:30 in the video.
    Where in the car would that connector/wire be hooked to. The ignition switch?
    I take it should be hooked to a switched positive power source?

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  6 років тому +1

      tpcoachfix - good question! On a 1G DSM there is a white wire that comes off the battery to an 80A fusible link (#1 in the fuse box). That fusible link feeds power to a bunch of things, including another 40A fusible link (#6 in the fuse box). That fusible link has a white wire with a red stripe coming out of it that feeds a bunch of fuses in the fuse box, including 10A fuse #19. That fuse has that red wire with a black stripe that powers up the Ecu.
      So - in short, you want to feed that pin 103 at the ECU (known as back-up power) ALL the time, BUT make sure it is on a 10A fuse.
      On my last 4G63 swap, I added a 10A fuse circuit to my factory fuse box under the dash. That way everything was totally factory looking/working and generally awesome.

    If you hook up a cas and spin it, it will also turn on the fuel pump, as the ECU will look for the cas pulses to verify the motor is running.

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  6 років тому

      Joe Riggieri - you are totally right!! Once everything is wired, and turned on, spinning the CAS will turn on the mpi relay. When you stop spinning the CAS, the relay will wait about two seconds and then turn off. If my harness wasn’t cut, I would have loved to have shown this !

  • @jesseortega790

    wow, how luck that your on the exact harness I'm working on, I'm in desperate need for help, I got rid of all harnesses and basically cut up the mpi relay to power the main engine harness, and figured out that pins 3,4,5(mpi) are switched power supplies that run to pins 102,107,110 on the ecu side and pin 9(mpi) is the constant that goes to pin 108 on ecu side, as well as pin 103 will get separate constant power. I looked at forms and that's what I was told as well as looking at all pins and running the wires back, the problem I now face is that I'm not sure to to wire the switched to the ignition so when I use the starter it sends the signal to the ecu to do its thing, is it as simple as adding another line from the starter signal wire that goes on the starter to go to the 108 pin on the ecu.?sorry for such a complicated question and hopefully u can help me.

    So... I ve a first generation of mitsubishi eclipse (eagle talon) 2.0 liter 150 hp non turbo version. With high atmospheric temperatures I often had some click from the mpi relay and some"switching off" engine during the drive that off course restarted immediately. Not nice if the trip is long under the sun... Never during the "non summer" seasons. But from yesterday I turn the key and I get just click click from that mpi relay... Do I have to replace the ecu boiled from the hot, or the mpi relay? The fact that it clicking means it is working right? Many many thanks in advance...im getting desperate!

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  5 років тому

      jackgaby - from my experience that typically means your ecu has issues, not your mpi relay. I believe that ecmlink still rebuilds these ecu’s if you want to have yours refreshed with new capacitors. Before you do all that though, try jump starting it with jumper cables to make sure it’s not just a dying car battery / alternator.

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  5 років тому

      Allan Folkes - thanks for the input. I’ve built a lot of these harnesses for people and so far, nobody has wanted the A/C wires yet! Lol. Luckily, they should be quite easy to hook up! The wires go directly from the ECU to the A/C compressor and temp sensors, which also control the fans. I believe the fans are the only thing that needs power from outside of the ECU harness. The rest is all just connections between the ECU and sensors & A/ C compressor.
      The tachometer is tricky because it’s the white wire on the power transistor, but if you plug that into a tach gauge, it causes a misfire in my experience. Another option is to connect the tach gauge to the coil wires, which works, but you will need to have an adjustable gauge that can offset for waste spark. I ended up building something very custom for my 4G63 truck that looked totally factory, and worked great, but it was an epic amount of work.
      Lastly - the charging system from the vehicle that the engine is being swapped into is the easiest to use because the Dsm ECU doesn’t connect to it. I have always just used whatever charging wires were already in the car/truck to make the alternator work.
      Hope that helps!
      -Jeremy

      Make sure your IAC (throttle body) plug is not swapped with your egr/fpr solenoid plug. They are interchangeable and will give you this problem. Actually follow the wires from the IAC back to the ECU to make sure it’s the correct wires. It’s easy to mix them up. Keep me updated!

    • @WiringRescue

      The 4g63 Ecu + mpi relay only sends power to the fuel pump when the engine is turning. So it sounds like you have it wired right. As soon as the engine stops spinning, the fuel pump turns off. You can test this by removing your CAS from the head, and spinning it by hand with the key on. You will hear your mpi relay click and your fuel pump turn on. Then when you stop spinning it, the fuel pump stops and the mpi relay clicks off about 3 seconds later.
