Picked up my new 1250GSA yesterday. As I plan to use it for long distance touring the shaft drive was a major selling point for me. Don't intend taking it off-road however it wouldn't be the first time I've taken a wrong turning and found myself on a dirt road/gravel track, so will be reassuring to know the bike can handle it.
All the best with your new GS! I've got to agree that the drive shaft was a fantastic move by BMW so many years ago. I'm actually glad that they are being rewarded with sales numbers largely thanks to this decision. Makes our lives so much easier living with a GS. Cheers!
One of my favourite reasons I love my new r1250gs rallye is that it is fun to ride slow. That might sound a little silly but I’m coming from over 40 years of riding fast motorbikes that aren’t happy unless you are going fast. I can hop on my GS now and happily plod along at 60/70mph and really enjoy it. My previous bike was an MT10 that was only fun going like stink and pulling wheelie, when I tried to cruise on it it was uncomfortable and generally not nice to be on
I agree that there are vehicles that feel happy in some circumstances and unhappy in others. I feel that it's the same with cars. What I know for sure is that R1250GS can also be a hell of a lot of fun to ride fast and aggressively. It makes me myself ride that way, especially in the city as it makes me very confident right from the beginning with its low center of gravity, balance and overall control.
Yeah I got the 2022 GSA as my first bike 🏍 one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life! It’s so good to ride, fits me (6’6), and fun to ride. Your videos helped me with the decision too, thank you for that.

Thank you, excellent video. I’ve been contemplating getting the 2022 1250 GS (non adventure) for several months and I’m close to making a decision. I mainly will have this a s a second bike that I want to enjoy(many of reasons you discussed) but I also want it for off-road riding. Nothing extreme but definitely some mix terrain, fire roads, and BDR. I know there are more capable off-road bikes out there but I think this gives me the overall package I’m looking for(more pros then cons) 🤷♂️
I'm glad you liked the vid and one of the things that the big GS is so praised for is that it does everything really well, so is a fantastic overall package. Also, I believe that it does some things in the best way too.
I do agree with all your points as an owner of a gs. The bike inspires confidence and is so easy to handle despite its mass. It is so comfortable to ride as well even on long trips….one question , have you tried different tires on the gs instead of the factory Bridgestones? Do you find them somewhat loud as i do? That being said, i wish you a happy and healthy healthy coming year. Thank you for the content.
Thanks for your feedback and I'm glad that you're enjoying your GS I wish I could give you more information on the tires and share my experiences but I have only tried the GSes that were very new and still on factory tires, so I've got no comparison. I would love a 1250GS but their price is prohibitive, especially when you have to add accessories. I always enjoy your reviews and videos. Maybe someday you will do a review on the "Super Tenere 1200". This bike also checks all the boxes and is so much more affordable. Have a safe and happy 2022.
Hi HR, I had a 2014 ST1200ES...the worst bike of 12 that I have owned! Poor throttle response, poor suspension (could never get it where it was not harsh but comfortable, it was either comfortable and too soft or harsh but handled well), not that fast, rough/un-refined engine and the seat kept making me slide forward bashing my twig and berries into the tank. Yes the GS is expensive but SO worth it.
Thanks for mentioning all that, I appreciate it and I'm glad that you like the videos. I do agree that some manufacturers, BMW included, become wild with their pricing to the... well... "wildly wild" point. I've ridden Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 a few years ago and found it quite a close match to R1200GS of that time. I think it felt a bit more rough and raw, and less sophisticated. I experienced the common issue of my knees resting on the bike's fairings which was uncomfortable for me as every time that I'd slide back to relieve my knees and get rid of the pain caused by that constant contact, I'd immediately slide back forward on the seat. That was a flaw that many taller riders found hard to deal with. I'm not that tall at 183 cm and my legs aren't unusually long, so "it was the bike, not me!". I actually checked the market today and there aren't many Super Teneres left out there even if we'd like to buy one today I think.
IMMEDIATE UPDATE: I just saw @Rob B's comment here about sliding forward and the knees problem. This is exactly what I meant and it made me strangely excited to see that he has already mentioned it. The word "rough" appeared too, so I'm certain that my memory of the time spent with the Super Tenere serves me very well.
I think that I'd rather look for a Suzuki V-Strom 650 with ABS if I had to get something similar from that time. V-Strom 1000 used to be a brilliant bike but lacked ABS for all its life. Then it become one ugly thing with V-Strom's engine and if not for its face, this could be a very interesting direction if you like what Super Tenere represents. Cheers and all the best in 2022!

@@VToldsMotoShow Thank you for your reply. Rob B did make some of the same comments you made on the shortcomings of the Super Tenere 1200. I am in the market for either a sport touring or adventure bike and like everything about the Super Tenere but I have never rode one. I also like the FJR1300 but again, never rode one. This Spring (May) when all the snow is gone and our biking seasons resumes, I will test ride these two bikes aswell as the 1200 or 1250GS.
The V-Strom 650 and Kaw Versys 650 are interesting but with no shaft drive, thats a deal breaker for me.

Great video and good points for sure. One thing to consider about the 2022 GS is that it has been out several years. When a new generation is launched many times issues come up and need to be worked out. This GS has been out what , 4 years? I think that would be a reason for me to buy a 2022 model. Best!
It just as well may be a good reason - in the factories and also on the design level, things may be improved and implemented every year and so they really become better with time. On the other hand, looking at potential "value" of a new generation comparing to "old", it's tempting to choose the newest as soon as it's launched. I sometimes cannot resist myself with some items. Sometimes you pay a high price for that, sometimes lower. Cheers!

Oh, I know it has got plenty of fans around the world. The "big" GS often gets all the credit as it's known for so many years, but the "medium" one represents the GS family with plenty of pride and love from the riders.

It's a really good piece of machinery. Despite its potential downsides for some of us in some areas, I'm very convinced that its advantages far outweigh any possible disadvantages.
You didn't mention anything (I don't think?) about its offroad capability. My 40th Anniversary (or really 41st Anniversary 2022) is on the way and I bought it so that I could ride offroad as well. It offers everything you mention AND the ability to ride almost anywhere offroad. For me, it will be mostly dirt country roads, but I'll do the Backcountry Discovery Routes here in the southwestern states of the U.S., as well. And then I'll ride it back home in comfort, unlike many of the riders who have to then trailer their bikes home.
Right, I haven't mentioned much about offroading as it's not that clear. The big GS is comfortable to ride for long on a dirt road as it's got a wide handlebar, it's easy to control, has a low center of gravity and even if it falls on a side it's easier to pick it up thanks to the cylinders. On the other hand, it's a heavy motorcycle while there are lighter ones on the market, its ground clearance isn't particularly impressive and there are ones with higher and much higher ground clearance: GS has 18,5 cm, GS Adventure 22 cm - and so does the new Ducati Multistrada V4. But for example the F850GS has almost 25 cm and that's a huge difference in favor of the 850. It would be much better in a truly rough spot than the big GS. And that's no surprise or a downside of the big one. In turn, it's so much more powerful and capable as a touring motorcycle. That's why it's hard to comment on it - there's nothing fantastic about it but nothing bad too. It will do it and if it's not hardcore, it may do it in style and comfort. Also, in tight spots or riding in places with some trees or stones, the cylinders sticking to the side may either save your feel from an impact or may theoretically cause you to crash into something that you'd otherwise miss. But I guess that this isn't really that relevant. I hope you get my point as it's not that super clear to me how to judge GS's offroad capabilities as that actually depends significantly on what the conditions are. I hope you will enjoy your GS and since it's coming, I say just use what it provides and likely you will be happy with what it can do. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing this in detail discussion. Gave you the 22th like. I agree about most parts. This bike just seems to be on the upper level if we consider riding, tech and comfort. I did a test ride, so you can check it. There are questionable sides of it: price, reliability, depreciation... Drop by if interested. :)

I'd say that everything should work pretty much the same as in a conventional suspension except for the feeling of diving. However, if I spent more time on a track, I'd be able to tell you more. Hopefully someone with this kind of experience can answer this more reliably.

I've owned 5 GS / GSA's.
4 of them was 1200's (2012-2017) and then a 1250 GSA in 2019.
Also bought a new ktm 1290 SA in 2016. Did not like it.
Now i have purchased a 2022 Multistrada V4s.
Rode a demo last summer, and it is the first bike i've tried that competes with the GS.
In some matters the Multi is better. For instance the suspension, with a lot more settings available both for preload and damping.
I actually think the electronics operating the suspension on the GS has become worse than earlier.
Up until 2017-2018, you had more adjustments available, with Soft, Normal and Hard settings on the damping.
Newer bikes only have two choices, Road and Dynamic.
When touring on my 1250 GSA with my girlfriend, i often found the Road mode too soft, with the Dynamic being just a bit too hard.
I really missed a setting right in the middle.
Riding alone, Road mode was fine.
Also, on earlier models you could set the suspension preload to Rider, Rider and luggage, Rider and passanger, Rider and passenger with luggage.
On the newer bikes you only have Minimum, Maximum and Auto.
I also miss some rebound damping on the GS, as i often find it a bit too "loose".
I mentioned this to my local dealer, and they told me they had reciewed this feedback from several customers.
On the Multistrada, you can adjust preload manually, with 24 levels to choose from. In addition, there is an Auto setting.
For damping, you have 5 settings: Softest, Soft, Medium, Hard and Hardest.
You can also adjust front and rear suspension individually.
That is not possible on the GS.
The quickshifter is on another level on the Ducati. Unbelievably smooth.
The same is the v4 engine, and together they make a great combo.
On the GS, the quickshifter is too clunky.
Also, the Multi is quieter to ride.
Not many talk about this, but ever since the "new" 1200 GS in 2013, there has been a certain road noise, especially with the GSA.
Some believe it comes from the front wheel, or parts of the front fairing.
It might cause some turbulence from this area, creating a noise which is noticable to the rider.
It is not a big problem, i use earplugs anyway, but there is definitely a noise.
I've seen some reviews about high consumption on the Multi.
Then i've seen owners reporting it's not that bad, 06-0.65 with pasanger.
Anyway, i believe you can expect the GS to perform a little better on fuel economy.
The GS is a fantastic bike, and you will not be disappointed if you buy one. But i suggest you have a ride on both of them before you decide.
After 5 GS's, my plan is to ride the Multi in 2022, and then maybe go for the GS again in 2023, if there is a new 1300 coming.
I Also tried the Pan America last summer.
It was surprisingly good, and an impressive first attempt from HD.
But it's not quite up there with BMW and Ducati.
No quickshifter either!

I'm currently hanging between 1250gs 2021 and the multistrada v4s. i believe after all i have read it will be the multistrada. @@matsrekdal3065 Good synopsis. I think one other factor I'd throw into the mix would be torque vs power characteristics of the GS and MSV4. The former has a plus point of low down grunt, if that's your thing, whereas the MSV4 has more power, if that's your thing. And yes, the GS1300 will be released in May 2023.

In real life, the GS is stronger than the V4, all the way up to 7000 revs.

I purchased the latest Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Explorer last week. I've had three 1200 GSs spread over 18 years. Fed up with the boxer engine. Time for a 3-cil. with T-plane crank !

Maybe it will if you mean a whole new GS, not just a new model year that looks like thee current one. It would require a radar like a Ducati Multistrada V4 has.
As a 2019 GSA owner I concur with all these points and will add its a very practical bike with all the luggage options.
Good point about the luggage - I'm a fan of the Vario cases idea, so without any additional mounting elements to put on a bike.

I believe that R1250GS Adventure offers huge possibilities in certain conditions and for certain riders. Its riding comfort may be even better than standard GS's. So no, definitely I would never say that I personally dislike the Adventure, nor the regular GS. I genuinely and deeply dislike only their exhaust sound. Other things I might personally even let pass.
@@VToldsMotoShow agree about the exhaust. However, it is inherent of a boxer engine. It’s just not a V twin. Akrapovic exhaust helps though.

I've got to say that I've found the news of a maintenance-free chain pretty hard to believe but I guess that time will tell if it works as advertised or not. Thanks for bringing this up.
They don't particularly hold value over the first three years - the depreciation is quite harsh. It's when they get to 4 years and beyond that the price decrease subsides, as the affordability class rises (i.e. number of people with the cash).
I wonder what market you mean. This has been changing in the recent years as the prices are skyrocketing now, so also differences in the value lost after specific time are getting larger. But still, comparing to some other motorcycles, I believe that a GS should be one of the best. Perhaps the rule of 4 years applies here as you said.
@@VToldsMotoShow yes, it's exactly that. Prices for the GS older than four years strongly hold their value, but depreciation over the fist 4 years is comparable with many other bikes and cars.

If you mean an automatic transmission then no, there's no such option for BMW GS family motorcycles. But there can be a feature called a quickshifter (or similarly by different manufacturers) which lets you change gears up and - in most motorcycles including GS - down without using clutch. Switching down, you should close the throttle though. Still, you've got to use a gear lever in the same way you always do, just may not touch the clutch lever. I hope that this helps.

Yo, when you stop to lubricate the chain, you cannot be riding at the same time and enjoying the views, right? Because you're there staring at the chain when spraying it. This sentence was supposed to be taken literally.
@@VToldsMotoShow You don't need to lube that chain all that much.You can ride all day long and not care about it. You really don't need stops for chain lubrication. Especially the O-ring chains. Those are lubed for life. No matter how much oil/chain lube you pour on them, it's not getting past the o-rings and inside the links. You're lubricating the chain mostly against corrosion. So every 1000km give it some spray and it's going to be fine. No need to stress about it.

@@VToldsMotoShow BMW just announced a recall for more than 400.000 R 1200 GS and R 1250 GS due issues relating the cardan drive shaft.
Its probably the best long distance long legged motorcycle for an experienced motorcyclist, but for most in slow town traffic it’s, an overly big beast, too high, too heavy and hard work. It’s also over priced, with high depreciation. The mid-side 750 is a much better choice. I have sold my R1250GS TE Rally after three years as it was unnecessarily too much of a hand full for every day.
Hey, I guess it's a matter of preference with choosing the preferred type of bike for certain circumstances. All big adventure bikes could be described in the same way, yet I myself would feel the most comfortable and in control on a GS when going through the city traffic. To me there are some specific advantages of a big adventure bike in the city, for example usually a wider, more comfy seat. I still enjoy power too, and this a smaller capacity bike wouldn't give me. Yet I understand that there's the time and place for everything.
@@VToldsMotoShow A wider more comfy seat in City traffic on such a high bike means you have to stretch your legs more to reach the ground. That is a hinderence not an advantage.

THe shaft is not maintenance free. Or, without some problems.
In theory and normal riding it should be for a very long time. Heading the same way, once in a while we should replace a whole engine too, yet it's not considered to be an item that's supposed to be replaced every now and then.
This GS driveshaft *DOES* need maintenance to avoid potentially expensive failure.
Triumph 1200 has entered the chat.
If you mean an oil change after 20-30k km, then this may be done but it's what you're doing via a service, not yourself on the road every 500 km. It's similar to replacing the chain and the sprockets and without everything else that's there to do with the chair.

It does appear rather small in the picture but we don't know how big the rider was. There are some other shots and until we see the bike in person, there's no way of telling at the moment. Photos can be misleading a lot. But yeah, you're not the only one who has noticed how small it seems to appear in those photos.
Traded my 2019 S1000R on a 2020 R1250GS. I appreciated the go anywhere ability, 2-up ease, perfect motorcycle. However, the GS totally lacks one thing: character. If mayonnaise was a motorcycle, it would be a GS. Sold that bitch and don’t regret it. I miss my s1000r everyday I even think about riding.

ThE boxer engine is one of the most characterful engines ever made!
If money is no object I get it but……..the super Tenere 1200, is more reliable, hands down, that can’t be argued. Yes, less electronics, but you can go anywhere the gs does, and the cost of ownership is nothing compared to the gs.

1st reason is way to expensive..2nd electronics, to heavy and rest of reasons simpler is beter.
