  • The weather was absolutely glorious in the mountains of the Lake District so I made the 3 hour drive to the amazing Helvellyn to do the 11 mile hike. I wanted to do this hike at the beginning of May but the weather outlook was awful so I waited for a brighter day when the visibility would be clear and the rocks dry.
I have done a few scrambles in the past but nothing really to this level - I wanted Striding Edge to be my first real test and it certainly didn't dissapoint.
I have been preparing for this Grade 1 scramble for many months by getting into a decent shape, eating more healthy, running, hiking, doing research and taking a course in grade 1 mountain scrambling. I have also been building up to it steadily by gaining plenty of mountain experience since starting this journey back in April 2023.
I would not have had the confidence to do ths exposed scramble without proper prep and by taking the 2 day scrambling course offered by The Mountaineering Company. I feel they gave me the confidence to do this, and I am hoping to do many more in the future.
    Check out the course here:

You can also check out my Snowdonia Scrambling video for Grade 1 Scrambling tips which I learnt on the course:

I used the All Trails App up to the summit of Helvellyn but made a diversion on the descent along Swirral Edge. The route is available here but please be advised that the start point for me was 1.5 miles away from the official location on the App. I had to walk a further 1.5 miles up Greenside road to reach the start of the route and no parking is allowed along this road:

I parked at Glenridding Car park for this hike - The Ullswater Streamers car park - CA11 0US. £8 for 5 hours or £12 for 8 hours.
I am far from an expert in anything, especally mountains, but I feel I am learning more as I go along and whatever tips and tricks I pick up I will share with you.
I used a body strap to film the footage along Striding edge so it isn't perfect as my hand gets in the way a few times due to my glasses sliding down because it was really hot and sticky - I also wear a hearing aid due to severe tinnitus so this caused the glasses to slip at times so I have to reach up to push my glasses back on. Like I mentioned above I am learning all the time so I think I might wear contact lenses for my next grade 1 scramble. Apologies for the hands in front of the camera and also apologies for the accent - i'm not as dumb as I sound!
** Please be advised that Striding Edge is a dangerous ridge and is not to be taken lightly so make sure you prepare fully by doing research, taking a course, getting into shape and taking decent equipment such as good gripping boots and plenty of food / fuel as scrambling can be tiring **
Always think about your next foot placement, proceed quietly and slowly like a cat across the rocks especially where exposure is involved. Use 3 points of contact and think about ledges, edges and wedges. Concentrate fully and enjoy it.
Helvellyn stands at a height of 3,117 feet and is England's 3rd highest mountain.
