  • Got stranded by my daily again. This time I think it was the weather! We've been having some unusually cold days and on this day my car was not idling correctly. Check engine light came on and had the smell of unburnt fuel out the exhaust. Follow along on my mistake ridden adventure!

    Mentioned Work light:
Braun Underhood Work Light, P/N 63990
Quick feedback on light. This light gives plenty of overhead light to perform general maintenance. I like the amount of light it produces and the size. However, you probably noticed that there was a near constant waviness to the video being shot. This was from some sort of interference this light was putting off, it could have been something with my now 10 year old camera, or a combination of all the above! Not an expert on light waves but my camera definitely picked something up. I'm keeping it for personal use as it does work, but for producing my videos I am looking at making something. I might post it too if it works!
As a starter light, This is definitely worth checking out!

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Figured it was the module after you swapped the packs.

Wow, I just went through this exact same thing a couple hours ago, in the bitter cold as well. 2 cylinders dropped out as I was driving so limped it into a parking lot. No spark on 1 and 4 so figured it had to be that coil. Picked one up nearby thinking it would be a quick fix only to still have the same problem. Swapped the old coils and new one around in every combination but still no spark on 1 and 4 every time. Finally found another store with a module in stock and made it right before they closed; swapped that in and it fired on all 4 again!
I had no idea a DIS module could fail halfway like that; always figured they were all or nothing but looks like you had the exact same experience!

@17:11 Did you apply any Thermal Paste on the metal part of the Ignition Module? Is it recommended? The thing is that on another car 2003 Chevy Cavalier everyone puts some Thermal Paste, I did it too. So I applied some on a new Ignition Module for 2001 Saturn SL2. I also installed new coils (not very expensive). I have now a code P0340, I'll check tomorrow the way you did on how many cylinders that car is running now, thank you. But I think maybe it is not grounding well bcs of that thermal paste.
Update: It was a faulty new Ignition Module. When i installed the original (old) Module (as well as original coils), the problem gone. No code anymore. I ordered ACDelco parts now.

I don't believe I did. When I pulled off the module it appeared there was nothing in between. I just made sure to clean the area before reassembly.

@@jungleking007Channel Thank you for the replay and method shown again. This morning I've checked w/your method by pulling out boots. The experiment revealed that the was no spark in the 1st cylinder. I replaced new coil for the original one and there was a spark w/it. It also showed that the clicking on the 2nd coil (new installed) was much weaker than on the original one. So I figured I bought not very good coils, one of which was a defective) no sound on cylinder 1. I'm returning these to Amazon, not surprised much, they were cheep coils (like $22 for the set). I installed the original coils, both, every cylinder is clicking, but after I started the car 2nd time again code P0340. So this code can come w/all the cylinder firing. I even don't know what that can be. What else can cause the code P0340 if all the cylinders are firing? I would appreciate any opinions on this matter. Thank you again.

@olenaerhardt7725 there is a good article on the saturn fans forum that might be useful. Search "P0340/P0341 Troubleshooting S-Series" should pop up with an article. Because these engines don't have a cam position sensor, the signal needs to be faked for the ecm to run properly. Resistance, spark plugs, ground could be the other culprits. Hope this helps!

Nice video dude really appreciate it good job. I dont have this issue yet but good to know! Also my engine runs cold always has and no amount of thermostats or housings ever fixed it. I ended up putting in a tstat in the upper hose and now it runs much better.

Nice video. I think mine had spark sound on all plugs but was cold and high idle. I'll try the plug method tomorrow when warm and low idle. It runs rough, lacks power, smells like un-burnt gas and smokes with white smoke sometimes. I'm using lots of gas too. I replaced plugs, wires, and cleaned off coils, controller and bolts but still rough running. Good ground for sure now.
I wish I could find definitive instructions on testing controller with volt/ohm meter. Coils both tested same as yours, around 720. If you look at the wires on the controller when mounted, the right got resistance but the middle two did not get anything. Maybe that part of controller burnt out. I'd just get a new one but at $140 for controller and $55 a piece for coil packs, I'd rather be sure.

Try replacing your Idle sensor or clean your throttle body mine Idled at 1,500 rpm after changing it and clean out with crc. It did fix it but I have a issue with mine that I would have press down on the gas to start it.

I had the same problem, and replaced the ignition control module. Engine runs great but now I have a 340 code. Any suggestions?

You'll have to clear code with scanner and see if does it again

I'm having the same code but different symptoms on my 2002 sc2. keeps throwing the p0341 code but it runs fine until it warms up and then it'll die and won't restart until it cools back down again. Just replaced everything from the ignition module all the way to the spark plugs and still hasn't changed anything. Even gave it a tune up and changed out the oil, air and fuel filters for good measure and still stubbornly dies after about 5-10 minutes of running.
