Replacing An Aluminum Door Skin

- I've never been a fan of door skins but I still normally end up doing a few a year. The worst are the skins that wrap all the way around the window frame at the top of the door. To make it even worse, this one is aluminum! Check out how it's done!
40 years and over 100 full frame-off restorations, that 3M hand belt grinder with a 3M purple 60 grit belt is easily the greatest tool ever made. I can't believe I went so long without one.
Didn't hear him mention it, but doing anything on aluminum you need new grinding disc, fiber wheels and belt for belt sanding. If you use anything that has touched steel you've just contaminated the new aluminum and it will corrode. Same with running tech screws into it.
with all that labor cost and the issue in the window channel, it would be better to just replace the door shell
I hope you do more repairs on ford f150 aluminum body vehicles very interesting to see how they are repaired
Replacing all the glass and everything in these doors and on those newer dodge has me cursing every second 😂
To me there easier the dodge especial
may be a stupid question
all the labor you put into it. what would have been the cost vs buying the door shell
I got hit by a hit and run driver on my drivers door AND my driver passanger door.
85,000 for a piece of beer can for a door. The world is ending.
Awesome work!
Fairly new to the industry, could you do a video on a few must have tools in your opinion? And things you wish you had just bit the bullet and got
You always do clean work !
Thank you for making this video
Have you ever cracked an edge hammering to much? Thanks for the video
Nice work what was that black plastic door skin tool
What was the black tool you used to roll the edge on that skin?
Never done this type of work, and not in the industry, yet here i am.
Hey what is the door skin tool you are using and are you just using a heel dolly to bend the edges?
Crimper?
Possibly a skin zipper
I enjoy your work especially the aluminum panels.
I wanted to see what rivets you use on that door spr or solid?
That’s what I came here to find out as well.
I use spr on them
yo what is that plastic tool that you use with the hammer to fold the door skin
Some kind of crimper?
OTC 501-080 kriming tool
hi can u share with me what is that plastic tool that you use with the hammer to fold the door skin
Crimper or skin zipper, I suppose.
I heard if its aluminum, you must put self etching primer, then 2 kprimer, then sand it with 180,then do body work intop of that.didnt know we could apply body filler on aluminum.now I know.
What black skin tool is that?
We don’t do aluminum door skin replacement where I work 😐 it doesn’t pay enough
Why you replace the door skin instead of just fix it ...the damage was easy to fix
Because it's aluminum
When the first came out thoght the same.but the never look right after there done. At our shop we dont even put door skin on the new ford trucks anymore. We replace the hole door . lot better job .it pays maybe 2hours less.
Nice job
Indeed looks like a really poor design by ford
What is the tool you're using a the 6min mark? Wish I had something like that when I have to do some door skin!
Thanks!
2021 Tahoe has aluminum doors and metal fenders.
cars today are definitely not what I use to work on... so much glue... good job
It’s not just ford that has the hard fold around the top, Volvo has one worse then ford!
Whats the name of that tool the one u use to
Fold the edges. I have a silver eagle air skin tool but that one look nice
You find out the name of that tool yet?
Aloha Bradda.. great job! Hopefully you can take a minute to help me out. Some A hole backed into my 2020 Raptor and I have a pretty significant dent in drivers rear door, should I even bother trying to have the dent pulled or just have a new door skin put on ? Roughly how much should I budget for such a thing ? Trying not to get completely ripped off .. people see a Raptor and assume you have big money and that’s not my case unfortunately. Thanks in advance!
What’s the tool your using at 6:05
Dam bro all that work to replace a skin. Just replace the shell next time. The time spent is not cost effective.
It looks like a pain in the butt to get this aluminum skin perfect. Bad design Ford. Maybe better to make this a replace door shell and eliminate outer panels much like Subaru and European vehicles. Cleaner job for the tech and customer in the end.
A lot a work wtf cheap insurance trow the shit to copart total loosss
I don't understand..why would you even mess with the door skin and the time and hassle it takes to replace it?A salvage door would have to be cheaper and alot simpler.
Yep no one puts these on to much time vs replacing the door. These trucks are expensive insurance can pay to replace it.
In our industry sometimes salvage parts aren’t available and some OEM parts are on back order. Leaving you with very limited time to get the job done so you use what’s available
@@southernbrew4252 yeah true but on something common like an F150 there always many options to take and alot easier ways to do it.
Buy a used door.
