Yeah, I would love to own a diesel motorcycle! It doesn’t have to be a military one, but a custom cruiser style, “perfected” and “corrected”, loud or semi loud, comfortable seats with all the trimmings. 600 miles!? Heck yeah!
It’s not a combat bike. This was most likely used for getting from one end to another of a base or something like that. They only made a few hundred. This wasn’t a common thing obviously. You wouldn’t see it in an infantry unit on the front lines.
Zero electric motorcycles are used by special forces now for reconnaissance / scouting & stealthy missions, they’re almost silent but wouldn’t have a quarter of the range of this diesel
These bikes/engines years ago were being developed by US and UK for their forces. Bikes were the only vehicles needing petrol. So would make sense to make a diesel to run on jet fuel. Good thing could run on veg oil. From internet "Two engineers at Cranfield University developed a four-valve single of 670cc and 33bhp. Mounted in a Kawasaki KLR chassis, it had decent acceleration, reached 75-80mph, and still gave nearly 100mpg. It was intended as a military bike, and a batch were eventually built in the States for the US Marines."
I have a 1993 Kawasaki KLX650 (not KLR) these were made for 3 years. It is nearly identical to this bike, they were designed for military use, have the same power and has been a great dual purpose bike. The bad thing about diesel vehicles is they are elevation adverse. (Don't breathe well unless turbo charged.) Kawasaki also built a 4 wheeler, that failed in sales because of the elevation problem.
This bike is amazing. Too bad they're so rare. I would love a full sized bike with that kind of fuel economy that can easily get up to freeway speeds. I could commute in that thing seven or eight months of the year
Scotty... there are 2 kinds of airplane fuel. AV-Gas (gasoline based, blue in color, mainly used in light airplanes), and kerosene/diesel based jet fuel, (used in all commercial and private turbine engine aircraft). Standard kerosene/diesel based jet fuel is no more explosive than pump diesel.
This lucky motorcycle probably spent it's time Stateside and did not see the sands of the Iraqi desert. I saw several of these bikes in the desert around Al-Asad Air Base during OIF...
Cool bike! Never heard of that model. Probably wouldn't meet emissions standards due to diesel fuel. However, 600mi range on a tank full? Amazing....👍😺
The UK army used Armstrong RT500, later sold the rights to Harley Davidson, and now replaced by the same Kawasaki KLR650-based HDT used by the US Forces. I rode them in the bases but never on patrol as it was too exposed. We used open top Land Rover Defenders for that role where the armour was under the vehicle not on top.
Sherman tanks were called Tommy burners or Tommy cookers too. My favourite motorbike were sunbeam s7 or s8's. Back in the day I had a Triumph Bonnie 750 from the meridian factory. Friends had Tritons, Norvins, Norimp, BSA golden flash. Good old days.
I saw those years ago, and understood the reasoning. Didn't know they only made them a short time. Too bad they're worth so much. It'd be fun to have as an all day desert cruiser.

Wow Scotty. I’d certainly love to have one of these. 👏
He's got my email listed, send me one and we can talk.
A diesel motor cycle you don't have to use expensive DEF either. Love it.🤩
That's a sweet looking motorcycle yes indeed! Good work Scotty! I'm working on my next song now
Fam
@@oso332 For sure!
An American specialty company did the conversion of the KLR 650. I saw one at a motorcycle rally in Duluth Minnesota. Another one I saw (another rally south MN) was a rare Royal Enfield diesel motorcycle and it smoked like an old Mack truck! An only sold in India model most will never see!
For fun, bring it to a motorcycle shop and say: “ I think I need a tune-up.” 😂🔧
LOL...that one hit close; I have a '87 BMW K75 cycle that NO BMW dealership will work on. NOTNING. Not tire changes, oil, etc. "Too old". Pisses me off.
@@tommynikon2283 I had the same issue with my 86 GSX-R1100, but theres a guy who was trained by Honda, and used to Race for them who lives close, what i cant do i get him to do it. He is never short of work either, is shop is full of 70s 80s 90s bikes that the "plug and play" mechanics (sorry, Technicians!) won't/cant work on.
@@uhtred7860 plug n play lol!😂✌️
I saw that bike a week ago. It’s on display at the Haas Motorcycle Museum in Dallas Texas.
That’s has to be one of the most baddass bikes I’ve ever seen. I want one
It is. That thing should last a few lifetimes. Anything diesel under military spec and bred with Japanese motorcycle engineering is built to last.
He posted my email address, send me one and we can talk
@@cooperjones7226 I posted this BEFORE Scotty mentioned they can go for 8k even if they don’t run. As much as I’d like to talk, I don’t have 8k to throw around atm. But I appreciate you reaching out.
Yeah, I would love to own a diesel motorcycle! It doesn’t have to be a military one, but a custom cruiser style, “perfected” and “corrected”, loud or semi loud, comfortable seats with all the trimmings. 600 miles!? Heck yeah!
Royal Enfield has diesel bikes in India.
Growing up as a kid we used to say : Kawasaki let the good times roll!😀
...to a stop on the side of a God forsaken road somewhere in Nebraska
I rolled down the road on a 650 Triumph and Kawasaki's were called rice burners..
@@austinstueland2933 , come on, that is a little harsh. ha ha
JP8 is the military grade of jet fuel. It's flash point is very close to that of diesel. That is why it is interchangeable in diesel engines.
If only 221 were made, how much was the cost per unit? Do I even want to know.
First thing I thought
When tax money is involved, no problem on the per unit cost!!
You ought to know, your taxes dollar paid for it.
I saw another video about these recently. I think the engine they swap in was about 15k on its own. The source KLR 650 cost about 6k.
I don't think that number is correct. This bike was sold to other NATO countries, not just used in the US military.
This is the second video on this motercycle in a month. Really cool
Amen on the gasoline station laws! Excellent take Scotty!
Scotty knows what's good! I took my 2015 KLR to Alaska and back cos I don't have '94 celica!
I’m impressed by the MPG however the enemy will hear that bike coming long before it gets there.
not in a fire fight or cannon barrage
It’s not a combat bike. This was most likely used for getting from one end to another of a base or something like that. They only made a few hundred. This wasn’t a common thing obviously. You wouldn’t see it in an infantry unit on the front lines.
@@contractorrants3503 understood. I was thinking with its very impressive MPG it might’ve seen a battle field or 2. I stand corrected.
Klrs are very quiet compared to other vehicles
Zero electric motorcycles are used by special forces now for reconnaissance / scouting & stealthy missions, they’re almost silent but wouldn’t have a quarter of the range of this diesel
I never knew there was such a bike. That 600 mi range on a bike is crazy. The best I get on all the sport bikes I've had is 150 mi.
Next video... "I've joined the Marines"
Specialist Scotty at the USMC motorpool.
What Marine you bought a GM car!
drop to the floor and give me 20!
Awesome! Always wanted to know who’s flag is behind you when you are in your office.
You must have been the one bidding with our favorite motorcycle riding, God loving beardo.
Scotty’s next video: “If you ride a motorcycle, you’re stupid.”
No he won't
Or,
'If you don't ride a motorcycle, you're stupid'
Either way we win and lose
If you ride a motorcycle while being stupid, you won't be for long.
@@lajya01 nice one
@@jimjames335
Yeah, it's amazing how quickly Scotty's videos switched over to that "whatever it takes to get people riled up" UA-cam style.
They have been making diesel engines for the KLR for a long time. A Kawasaki dealer told me about this in 2005 when I bought my first 650.
Now let's take it for a spin, starts right up, shifts like a dream, AC ice cold...aaaahhhh!!!
I love that they went to the trouble of putting stealth night-lights on it, but you can hear it 30 miles away.
a world where everyone is rolling aces
Saw one of these in Phoenix Craigslist a few years ago. Think it was $12k…
I have a 1993 Kawasaki KLX650 (not KLR) these were made for 3 years. It is nearly identical to this bike, they were designed for military use, have the same power and has been a great dual purpose bike. The bad thing about diesel vehicles is they are elevation adverse. (Don't breathe well unless turbo charged.)
Kawasaki also built a 4 wheeler, that failed in sales because of the elevation problem.
Newsom would keep me from driving it in Calif. He would say it pollutes.
Scotty i own 2 kawasaki z 250 sl and z900 both amazing the best!
Wish a company made a Diesel engine that would fit into a stock kawi chassis, then we could all enjoy these prepper style bikes
Looks like you've got a chance to corner the market.
@@blues03 🤣
Royal Enfield used to offer a thumper using diesel. I still see some of em in this day here.
At 1500 miles, this diesel motorcycle hadn’t seen much action.
This lucky motorcycle probably spent it's time Stateside and did not see the sands of the Iraqi desert. I saw several of these bikes in the desert around Al-Asad Air Base during OIF...
Diesel in a bike is a waste of time..all round
Cool bike! Never heard of that model. Probably wouldn't meet emissions standards due to diesel fuel. However, 600mi range on a tank full? Amazing....👍😺
To be honest i much pretty much prefer a bike that has a diesel engine instead of a petrol engine or "gas" for you all fine folk.
He's posted my email, send me one and we can talk about getting it into your hands
Kawasaki KLR 650. The most fun motorcycle I've ever had.
my filling and teeth would fall out with those vibes :)
On gasoline KLR 650's changing the doohicky (look it up) does help but it's still a big thumper.
Thanks , Scotty . You are an American hero .
They made about 220 of those motorcycles .
O K .
I have one word in response :
Rokon .
Whenever Scotty Kilmers drops the new videos I roll up the Wool-o and get all schmoked up
The UK army used Armstrong RT500, later sold the rights to Harley Davidson, and now replaced by the same Kawasaki KLR650-based HDT used by the US Forces. I rode them in the bases but never on patrol as it was too exposed. We used open top Land Rover Defenders for that role where the armour was under the vehicle not on top.
Wonder if this one also needs the doohickey fixed 😂 Anyone who knows KLRs will get that one.
Beautifully explained, why diesel is the fuel of choice for military. 👍
AFSOC Combat Controllers had the KLR 250s and the Army 57th Ranger Regiment still uses the KLX110's!
The "ring that bell" part always gets me, man you're awesome
