I have never listened to them, but he obviously was a gifted musician with a lasting impact on music. The Best Worst Band in the world…what a classic. I didn’t realise how few members there were! Just three. Great work my friend.
@@vikingoverlord857 Better as in not getting so wasted he could not perform so pissing of the rest of the band,..He was the real deal apart from that...
Saw him with Motorhead as the opening band , for Blizzard of OZ,at Boston Orpheum, one of the best concerts I ever seen!Lemmy and Motorhead were fantastic,as was Randy Rhodes with Ozzy, my ears were ringing for days, thanks Motorhead!
He was amazing, a total force of nature, he had swing, groove and a naughty drumming spirit, I mean, listen to the groove he lays down on the On Parole version of Iron Horse, tremendous, aye, Phil was so good, I honestly think bands were scared of him, hence he never got more work, he should have, he was an incredible drummer, all his work is amazing, Another Perfect Day was an immense lesson in how to sit behind a drum kit, and batter the life out of it, such a special man, a complete nutter, but a wonderful nutter. I saw him with two drop dead ladies before a show. He enabled my hang over without even asking for anything. Never made into the show. Took a decade to finally enter a Motorhead show successfully.
Met the man at the bar in Leeds uni in 1978.Just chatting having a drink. He said “I’ve got to go see you “Next thing I new he was on stage playing.Didn’t know who he was until then.
I bumped into him in Belfast, on his way to a soundcheck, and he was only too happy for me to stroll with him and chat. On arriving at the venue I said goodbye, and he invited me to come in and meet the other guys . . . It would have been rude to refuse. He was charming, friendly, and not what I had expected at all.
I met him at the Marque Club when icu had a residency. We were in the bar when last orders was called. Philthy got up, he was on a mission.... to drink any unattended/unguarded drink no matter what it was. RIP.
Everyone is always talking about early MOTORHEAD as being the only period that mattered while the band kept recording and releasing top notch albums all the way to the end. Ckeck out "Inferno", that came out to little fanfare but was immediately a top contender for the metal album of the year. That record just rages with good songs being played extremely well. What a great album!
first 2 pictures you can see a young Skinhead (first one) and Suedehead (second one). In the second picture you can see him play Reggae on drums (late 60s skinhead choice of music). Wonder how it influenced his style.
Seen them in July 1980 at The Heavy Metal Barn Dance Bingley Hall Stafford, they were like Gods to me, i thought they would be around for ever, now all three of them have gone..
43 years later and my ears are still ringing! Seen millions of bands since then but Motörhead were the only one to set up stall outside the venue afterwards to chat and sign autographs. Good lads.
His dad owned a cafe where I lived so me and a friend got well in with him and luckily he offered to take us backstage at Leeds uni and the band even came and saw us the day after at Phil’s dads cafe.

Very under rated drummer like bill Ward and Steven Adler you don't need to be fast a thousand beats a second these drummers had something to say fast hard hitting drummers are a dime a dozen they don't mature and after a while it just sounds the same.
lemmy wrote Bomber, after reading Len Deighton's book Bomber, Gary Numan and Tubeway Army were at same recording studio, Gary Numan altered the lyrics for his equally famous song Bombers!

That had to be a great concert.
Same but Louisville Gardens. Great show. Ozzy wasnt in tip top shape. Motörhead blew them off the stage.

The man literally invented thrash metal drumming. RIP Phil & PLAY LOUD in Valhalla.
It's the D-beat style, but people don't realize it.
Not true, listen to Stone Cold Crazy by Queen, it pre-dates Motörhead.
I just know the Discharge songs fit right on that early Phil drumming, lots of the Motorhead songs.

The pioneer of double bass, a legend!
Every drummer that plays double kicks owes a debt to Philthy...
Luis Belson did it way earlier
If you believe that double kicks were invented in 1975, you owe an apology to your mother.

Lemmy a month later and Eddie Clarke three years later. Motorhead are now all gone.
