  • Despite being discontinued a long time ago, the Sony A7Rii is still a very capable camera in my opinion. Of course there are some downsides but for the price that you can get it for nowadays as well as for the capabilities and qualities that it still can deliver, it is really a bargain! I hope that you all can enjoy as well as gain something from video! :-)

    I've found the electronic shutter OK with artificial lights if you match your shutter speed to the frequency of the lights. In the UK, our electricity supply operates at 50Hz so I'd use shutter speeds of 1/50, or 1/100 etc - any speed as long as it divisible by 50 and then there's no banding. You'd have to adjust that to whatever frequency is used in your own country - I think the US is 60Hz.
    The A7Rii is the only camera I own tht has the ability to use a fully electronic shutter so I don't know how other cameras get around this issue.

    This camera will go down as a LEGEND! I bought mine last year at Best Buy for 1200 and got a Sony 24-105 g00s and the Sony 85mm 1.8...This camera has taken some of the most beautiful pictures I've seen...all these newer Sonys are amazing and I get the modern tech and how fast they are but as just a shooter it does it wonderfully...here and there video taking are pretty good but definitely not a video camera...good to see people making videos about the a7R2!

      Congrats on your A7Rii and also glad to hear that you are really happy with the camera! :-) It is indeed a great camera that is still reliable and also produces great results as well. I also really love the compact size of the camera and how responsive it is. I am sure you'll produce amazing results with it. Thank you very much for watching and also for sharing your story, very much appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

      I took sent ine to MPB... told them to send it back LOL I love my A7R ii too much! It's an amazing camera, you just have to work it a touch differently than others but it does fantastic wonders including low light. This camera LOVES strobe/speedlite work though. It gets super sharp

    I still keep my A7rii at the ready! Yes I have upgraded to the A7RV but a few very important things missing. The A7rii yes first with IBIS so sticks are used less, In '17 took on a trip to Arizona Antelope Canyon I forgot in my car the camera plate for my tripod so hand holding but a test of Bracketing 3 @ +/- 2 ev in the darkened Canyon worked while the Canon and Nikon were on sticks doing long exposures also I just got the FE 12-24mm F4 G lens and no one came close to 12mm maybe 16mm I was able to lay on my back shooting straight up or lay at the others feet and best I could shoot anywhere not harnessed to some sticks, back at the hotel about 10 other photographers gasped at the wide shots as well the bracketed IBIS. Also a morning at Horseshoe I was able to use the Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 and got panorama shots in 3:2 while others were at the edge doing 180 degree panos on sticks in the wind. Next to the Grand Canyon I had brought my $800 pano rig but was time consuming setting up in crowds so look and the dail there is a Panorama section that can be done on sticks or by hand even a 100mm shot came out great. The cream on the top that few know about and will keep a high price on the camera and all M 1 and M 2 Sony cameras are the on camera apps from Sony Playmemories and the main one is the "Digital Filter" that is mostly used for Sunsets/Sunrises BUT I discovered using for Milky Ways over lit cities/towns with sky glow above it does everything in camera using every setting you can use in a single shot from WB to SS and ect. Sky then foreground in RAW and edited a little before sending to SD card in raw or jpeg. Way better than carrying a bag full of filters and holders out into the darkness!
    Sony discontinued Playmemories apps in M3 and above but with them on the camera your camera is a golden for life. You can still buy and download them for I call pennies compared to cost just for filters. Also great for milky waters th rivers/surf. I live in a light polluted are and have gotten the MW above my house while shooting under a street light and orange lit skies. Have you ever done lit caves one of the best projects to ever do!!!

    Can you share with us, what camera setting is needed to get the pictures sharp, contrast and vivid colors, without grading...
    I don't want the Log cinematic look. I want it to vibrant and punchy colors..

    I had the a7 ii and became a fan but wanted to do more. Later, I just got the a7R ii. Mental menus made for engineers who didn't finish the menus. My a6400 is the same way. Awesome camera made for engineers, not really for us. But being a techie geek anyway, it is not that big deal. My Canon's and Nikons in the past were much easier to grasp. I am shooting EF glass and want the FE Zeiss. It is so mental in so many ways like my a7 II was, but the images look great, and the body build is so much nicer I think. Plus the a6400, and RX 10 take the same tiny batteries. I kind of accept that as a SOP. I use a battery grip so I fly 2 in the a7 camera.

    Hi David, considering you have shot various brands and models from Fuji, Nikon, Canon, and now Sony, which camera from the ones you have tried would you say do best with Skin tones. Also, I would love to hear more about which ones you prefer for overall rendering (highlight rolloff, colors, natural rendition). I feel some modern sensors can seem too "digital" if that's a thing.

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  Рік тому +5

      Just purely based on my experience and also my personal preference, I would have to give the first place to Canon then follow very close by Nikon, the third place would be shared between Fujifilm and Pentax, the fourth place is Sony and Olympus and the fifth place is Panasonic. Though Panasonic is in the last place, they really have made huge improvements in their skin tones when they started producing their full frame cameras. For example, the Panasonic S5 is one of my favourite cameras for skin tones but of course, it's not enough to win me over when most of their cameras (in my opinion/experience/preference) still doesn't produce nice skin tones. With Sony, it is a difficult one... They definitely came a loooonnnnng way since their first camera and you really feel the improvement with every generation of cameras they release. However, though the skin tones does not give the most pleasant look straight out of the camera but at least you can really bring it to life later in post with just a couple of seconds spent on it. And once you bring it to life, you can see just how good the skin tones looks on on the Sony files. Canon and Nikon also have their look (and they are both very popular for their colour science)... I think that when Nikon gets it right, they really hit the home run with their colour science and skin tones.. But just like Canon, they don't have the exact same look with every model of their cameras. I personally love the look of the D700, D850, Z7, Z7 ii, Z6 and Z6ii the most from Nikon side of cameras. That said, because I have more favourites on the Canon side, it easily took the first place. Some of my favourite colour science and skin tones from Canon bodies are: 5d, 5d mark iii, 1d mark iii, 1dx, eos R, eos R5, eos RP, 6D, 6d mark ii, 1Ds mark iii and a few more... That said, this is just based on my preference, experience, the way I shoot, etc... So please don't take my "ranking" as an official ranking because different photographers will have their own preference on what works for them/what looks good to them, etc. But I hope that helps and I thank you very much for watching and also for sharing your thoughts and story, very much appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

    • @DavidCuhls

      Thank you so much for the compliment and also for watching, really means a lot! :-) Yeah, Sony is actually a great system. They have a lot of third party lenses with many unique focal lengths to really try on, their cameras although not as reliable as Canon and Nikon but offers a lot more features as well as some experimental features that brands like Canon and Nikon wouldn't put into their cameras unless they'd be sure about it... The bodies are compact and if you pick the more modern ones, they are also actually quite tough with great auto focusing system. After the learning curve, I think it's a very easy system to really enjoy using for sure. :-) Thank you again for the compliment and for watching, really appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

      The lens with the patterned lines on it is the Sony 20mm f/1.8. It's my favourite Sony lens that I like to keep it mounted to any of my Sony cameras at all times because I find it one of the most versatile focal length for what I shoot. Hope that helps. @jliang70 10 місяців тому +1

      @@thebendu33 R2 and R3 used the same 42mp sensor, R3 has improved autofocus over R2 and it also has a burst mode of 10 frames/sec instead of 5 frames/sec. R2 was one of the first model to have eye autofocus but it is a generation behind A7iii. R2 remain a powerful lightweight full frame camera because its sensor is still good considering even with today's competition with the like of 47mp sensors used on Panasonic and Nikon's sensor on Z7 series.

    • @jliang70
      @jliang70 10 місяців тому +1

      @@thebendu33 R3 is a more responsive camera than R2, you will appreciate the difference between these two. I know R3 is still cheaper than A74, A7R4 is cost a bit more than A74. I haven't used R3 but I can tell you that A7R4's autofocus is where you will really feel the generational difference between R4 and R2. R3's autofocus is very close to that of R4 and A73. I do use R2 it is a camera that I use for manual photography like Macros. Go for R3 if your budget stretch that far. On the small budget I would not go for R4, 42mp is plenty.
