- Laurie speaking at Lanford's memorial in Los Angeles - a section from the incredible monologue (Darlene's) from Balm in Gilead. In fond memory of Lanford, and looking forward to the new musical version of Lanford's wonderful play - Raindogs.

I saw it with my parents, who were visiting when I was at NYU. I remember walking out of the theatre saying, "remember these names. These people are going to be big stars."
A truly unforgettable night in the theatre.
I saw Balm In Gilead back in 1984 and call still remember Laurie Metcalf's performance. What a superb Actor. Brava! XO
I saw Balm In Gilead in the 80s. Laurie stopped the show with that 20-minute monologue. Unforgettable.
with the haunting strains of Tom Wait's 'Waltzing Matilda' rising under her monologue, it remains one of the most moving experiences I've ever had in the theater.
The second time I saw "Balm in Gilead," I checked my watch. I think it was more like 30 minutes.
Laurie is just incredible! Such a fascinating visceral actress! She makes such big choices and takes big risks. She is captivating, intelligent and hilarious! What a treasure!
The greatest play I have ever seen. Laurie Metcalf was a tour de force. Also terrific were Gary Sinise, William Peterson, Jeff Perry, and a slew of others from The Steppenwolf Theatre. Directed by the great John Malkovich.
Probably my favorite play of all time. Just amazing. And for those that don't know it, that Darlene monologue is about 20 minutes long...and it's sensational. It's practically a one act play onto itself.

Lanford Wilson heard "Darlene" so perfectly, and he was only 25.
I imagine it's no coincidence she played a Darlene's aunt in Lanford, Illinois?
Really refreshing. I've been so used to seeing her in character, that this must be close to the real her. I saw something on social media last night, which stopped me dead. It was on Twitter. Suddenly, it dawned on me that I always had a thing about "Aunt Jackie" on Roseanne, because she is the embodiment of the sort of woman that interests me. Highly intelligent, and in my view, very sexy. I'm just discovering a back catalogue of her work (admittedly on multi-media) and I'm trying to work out why I missed her after Roseanne. She's quite a lady.
You MUST see her guest appearance on "Frasier."
Jackie played Darleen! If only she could find a show to settle into with Darleen and her boyfriend.
Sorta weird how she's talking about Lanford and Darlene, yet it's not about the 'Roseanne' show.
