Poor Stephen had to take a moment when Laurie said that everyone wanted to call their mothers after watching the film. He seemed so heartbroken that he won't be able to make that call to his own mom. So much love to him.
It's great to see her back in the spotlight, especially with this movie. She's done some great stuff over the years, and this is one of her best roles yet.
This movie was one of Metcalf's finest performance pieces, in my humble opinion. The chemistry between mother and daughter and in particular the gradual realisation towards the end that they are in fact 'in this together' was a joy to observe. I don't think those closing scenes get enough credit to be honest.
Laurie Metcalf is an incredible actress. Jackie was my favorite character on Roseanne and Laurie was just brilliant in that portrayal. The funniest scene ever was Jackie getting addicted to the computer.
Her performance in Lady Bird is the best of the year. So subtle, so powerful. Allison Janney was great in I, Tonya, but I really hope Metcalf gets the recognition she deserves.
Elina H I heard "meh" as a review from an actress I know whose opinion I respect. I personally have a poor mother son relationship so that's 2 strikes I gather.
My flatmate pirated it, and we watched it last Sunday after dinner. [I told him that people were saying that Saiorsie Ronan was brilliant - but I knew nothing else]. We both watched it and thought it was great, and we're complete opposites in our entertainment tastes ... I'm more highbrow sci-fi and fantasy and horror .. he hates that stuff and likes Big Bang Theory and US crime shows CSI etc. Even though it's just a 'normal' drama, we both agreed it was a good movie. So your actress friend is probably just jealous of the outstanding performances in the film ... Saorsie and Laurie .. and a bunch of other supporting characters too. EVERYBODY in this film was superb at acting. The movie is about a very self-entitled girl who has convinced her equally headstrong mother into agreeing to call her "Ladybird" - arguing [there's a LOT of that] that she has chosen the name for herself, and that her mother didn't really have the right to give her a name that she hadn't chosen for herself! That's the premise - it's not a spoiler ... and I won't spoil anything else, as I'm sure you'll now watch it to see what happens as "Ladybird" approaches her finals in High School ... even though her grades suck, she has her heart set on a New York art school well away from the 'shithole' [as she sees it] of Sacramento ... her very unrealistic ambitions are tested to comedic and dramatic affect.
@@TheRoybert I'm not sure if you've watched it, but it is an incredible movie. The mother and daughter in this movie have a very realistic relationship. It seems like a poor relationship when taken at face value, but it is so clear that they love each other deeply. You may love it, please, please, please give it a chance!
My advice is to just accept you mother for who she is and accept that she’s not going to change. She’ll age, and probably get more annoying....but, as sad as it is, one day you will wake up and not have a mother. Enjoy the time you have with her, she’s your mother and she probably loves you in a way that nobody else will love you the same ever. Try and find a balance and just exist knowing how lucky you are to still have your mother in your life.
1. This movie is such a beautiful character experience . such amazing acting . 2. This interview is awesome, I like that Fallon has his games and is fun, but Colbert really is able to get deep with his guests and explore what it is their doing . and when he gets guests like Laurie who are very articulste, it just makes such compelling tv
Omgosh, my 23 yr old daughter and I shopped at Thrift Town in Sac all the time and this brought back so many memories! Cannot wait to see this. I'm going to wait until she comes home for a visit tho, so we can see it together. :)
Never heard of the movie , never heard of her , never even heard anything he is talking about , Aside from that Laurie seems like a delight , she is so mom like its heartwarming tbh.
Renegade5130, I HIGHLY disagree. It manages to be classic, young, on trend and complementary all at the same time. And to pair it with the wide pant and the half cut heels.... Perfection 👌🏼
Milly Borkovic I know!! She doesn't just age gracefully...she doesn't seem to age! 🙂 I loved her when she on Roseanne but so impressed with all the other things she's afterwards.
Laurie is just amazing. My favorite actress. I first saw her in Uncle Buck and she was so interestng! and then Jackie Harris... what a Gem ! Did you know that she played Mary Cooper in The Big Bang Theory and her real life daughter Zoe Perry, took over that role in the prequel Young Sheldon. They sound the same and have the same body language. It's fantastic !!!
Wow. Laurie has a daughter "in her 30s" & one is TWELVE? And she's been one of our best actresses for decades? Screw that Gal Godot chick, LAURIE is the REAL Wonder Woman!
Laurie will always be ‘Auntie Jackie’ to me. That show taught me more about bringing up kids than any other single thing. We have two well-adjusted and upright kids to prove it. Laurie looking fabulous by the way.......
I loved Roseanne and I'm excited for it to return, so I hope it's good. One of my favorite parts Laurie played was the crazy seductress in the movie Uncle Buck. RIP John Candy.
i only know her from roseanne (loved the show and her character) and i really enjoyed this interview, she seems so natural. looking forward to seeing her other work.
For those who haven't yet seen the American version of the HBO series GETTING ON, it's a must-see. Laurie is brilliant in it! The rest of the cast is fantastic, too.
I know Stephen Colbert lost his mother. But I don't think that weird reaction at 3:03 was about that. It was as if he completely tuned out and entirely missed what Laurie said. I wonder if a producer has said something in his earpiece? He appears to adjust it. I don't think he actually heard what Laurie said at all. Quite an awkward interview and very unlike Stephen Colbert. He seemed very distracted. Laurie Metcalfe saved it because she's naturally brilliant, likeable and articulate.
When Stephen said she captured the mother relationship perfectly i was hoping that he would show the clip of her rubbing Sheldon’s chest and singing Soft kitty warm kitty😂
She totally gave him those eyes right after she came out of, "I tried just shaking your hand and giving you clear signal of that and you still went in for the hug and invaded my personal space. How did you not get the signal?" Like her eyes were like daggers at him right after she sat down. You see this sometimes with some of the women who come out with Stephen as he likes to hug very or sometimes kiss on the cheek the women who come out. He was always a flirt and I like to give him the benefit of the doubt and say it was just all in good fun but I think in the climate of today he should just stick to handshakes with everyone. Especially those who clearly offer only a hand.
I was reading some article I don't remember where now, and apparently at some gathering they made up more verses. So, here ya go. :-D Soft bunny, warm bunny, floppy ears on top, happy bunny, sleepy bunny, hop, hop, hop. Hard turtle, wet turtle, where did your head go? Happy turtle, sleepy turtle, slow, slow, slow.
Poor Stephen had to take a moment when Laurie said that everyone wanted to call their mothers after watching the film. He seemed so heartbroken that he won't be able to make that call to his own mom. So much love to him.
@Tavon Fenwick He was smoking?? lol
You can almost feel Stephen thinking about his late mom after she mentioned people wanting to call their mothers. Missing her.
I feel like we needed more Laurie Metcalf.
Greene Fieldmann did you see her in that series on hbo. I forget the name. It’s a nursing home show. She was fantastic.
I see there's a "Getting On" on her IMDB page. I'd never heard they did a US version, but it sounds interesting!
Jared Q gettin on. Still to this day i think she deserved an emmy for her performance on the first season
We don't need her anymore?
I love that her elder daughter plays Sheldon's mom on Young Sheldon. Perfect casting!
Ohhh! That's who Mary Cooper reminds me of!
Such a great actress. Her comedic timing is remarkable and unmatched. She was also the best part about Roseanne.
That thrift store scene was the most relatable thing 🥺 bickering into “oh I love it!” Lol
Holy shit happy to see her still doing things, always know her as Jackie.
Mrs Cooper
"I know you love me but do you like me" Hit me so hard. Wanted to call my dad and ask the same thing about my teenage self.
My son just raved about this movie to me. First movie he ever laughed all the way through & then bawled.
It's great to see her back in the spotlight, especially with this movie. She's done some great stuff over the years, and this is one of her best roles yet.
OMG Laurie Metcalf is second to none! She's so incredible ♡
This movie was one of Metcalf's finest performance pieces, in my humble opinion. The chemistry between mother and daughter and in particular the gradual realisation towards the end that they are in fact 'in this together' was a joy to observe. I don't think those closing scenes get enough credit to be honest.
I ADORE this incredibly talented woman! So glad to finally see her more often in shows and films.. and of course soon in the reboot of Roseanne!
Years after falling in love with her in Roseanne, I still love this lady!
Go Laurie!
Stephen, you have grown so much as an interviewer. I'm proud of you!
Lady Bird is an awesome film, everybody see it

I’m 46. My mother is 69. And we still have that love/hate relationship. She is STILL trying to tell me what to do. Does it ever end???
My advice is to just accept you mother for who she is and accept that she’s not going to change. Laurie Metcalf looks like an older Sarah Paulson.
Haha! AGREE!
They would be a hot couple.
@@mitchellhughes5180 Is Laurie Metcalf a lesbian?
Her performance in LB was flawless.
I loooooooove Laurie Metcalf! Absolutely brilliant.
Laurie is brilliant!! I absolutely *love* Roseanne, and it had such a big impact on me growing up. I can’t wait to see Ladybird, it looks so good!!
Danielle Spargo Watching Roseanne made me the loving and ornery person I am today.
Her acting on Horace & Pete is one of the best things I've ever seen.
James Harris, I agree. The ending was just spiteful.
ladybird now playing
Oh shit, do the extended versions exist somewhere? Like, can I torrent them?
Love Laurie Metcalf. So underrated.
1. This movie is such a beautiful character experience . such amazing acting .

The iook on her face right at the end when he says Lauren instead of Laurie. LOL.
Ghaaaa. I love her.
Every time I see her in my head I always say: Hey it's Aunt Jackie!
I knew she was amazing on Horace and Pete. ☺
Amazing actress
Best Mom of the Year Award goes to Laurie Metcalf for: Joins the cast of daughter's favorite show, so daughter can meet the cast with dignity.
Hey look its Sheldon's mom. Jokes aside, she is great.
I cannot imagine anybody else being Sheldon's mother, she OWNS it!!!
I remember her as Andy's mother, yes, the Andy who's got a friend in Woody.
Jackie from Roseanne!
1c3manBG She is brilliant in that role. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Oh. I know that. I love her performance in TBBT. Wouldn't mind seeing her more thought.
Omgosh, my 23 yr old daughter and I shopped at Thrift Town in Sac all the time and this brought back so many memories! Cannot wait to see this. I'm going to wait until she comes home for a visit tho, so we can see it together. :)
“You obviously play the mom”
She hardly looks a day older than in her Roseanne days
Her daughter Zoe looks so much like her that I often think of "Jackie" while watching the "Young Sheldon" videos!
I actually did call my mom two seconds after I watched the movie... I feel called out.
Mary Cooper 😆😆😍😍
Jackie Harris was before Mary Cooper...... Laurie makes all her characters come ALIVE! :-D
What an awesome mom to be on Supergirl for her daughter. Looking forward to seeing her on that episode.
I love the fact that Laurie and her daughter both play the role of Sheldon's mom.
She seems like a great lady. And she’s so talented! She’s also from the same neck-of-the-woods I’m from!
My daughter’s teenage rebellion didn’t happen until her early twenties and lasted for about a year. I was sooo lucky.
So relevant. Thanks for telling us.
It was relevant and I'm thankful for the sharing :)
Metcalf has ALWAYS been a great actress. Just one of those reserved yet quiet people who can command a performance.
Fantastic interviewing by Stephen as usual. Oh, and she’s pretty good too.
She was awesome in the HBO show "Getting On." So believable and so funny.
Never heard of the movie , never heard of her , never even heard anything he is talking about , Aside from that Laurie seems like a delight , she is so mom like its heartwarming tbh.
Just noticed her prolific Mom roles:
- Scream 2
- Toy Story
- The Big Bang Theory
and now this!
I know she's a great actress with many roles under her belt but Laurie Metcalf as Sheldon's mother = priceless
What a lovely lady
She looks IMPECCABLE. Her whole outfit head to toe is exceptional. 👌🏼
Milly Borkovic, and how is she 62?!!
Hayley The best... WHAT! I thought she was in her 40’s, even though here she looks like she’s in her 30’s! 😍
Sorry but that sweater is awful

Oh yea, just this scene alone brought me to tears.
Personally think she deserves the Oscar more than Allison Janney, who was also great
She is brilliant in everything she does, you are a true delight.
Laurie is just amazing. My favorite actress. I first saw her in Uncle Buck and she was so interestng! and then Jackie Harris... what a Gem ! She's about to go back to Broadway in Three Tall Women, with Glenda Jackson and Alison Pill. I won't miss that one. What a cast!
everyone's favorite aunt, she's the best 🙌

It's so true tho

She clearly knows how to deal with tough kids, first Sheldon, now Lady Bird.
Laurie Metcalf should appear in every movie ever made.
She always has been awesome playing Jackie.
Stephen thanks for giving Laurie chance to explain her roles.

Colbert's "go to" question when he has nothing interesting to say: "What's that like?!" Brilliant.

She nailed that role in Lady Bird.

Great actress.

One of the best American actresses
She's great. Go Laurie.

Loved her in 'Uncle Buck'...
Can't wait till May! I want to be in that time warp
