Well, the R8600 has finally arrived in the UK and I have ordered one from the second batch; the entire first batch went out of all dealers’ doors on day one. Many thanks Scotty for your excellent videos which have helped me decide to add the 8600 to my 9500 and rather too many other receivers and transceivers. Warm Regards, G6XYZ
Well, the 8600 arrives today. On Saturday my 9500 goes to Wales for a service at Castle Electronics. I anticipate using the 9500 with my Diamond D777, D130 and Wellbrook whilst the 8600 will use the AH 8000 I have installed on the chimney. On paper it should be a great set up, I’ll let you know how things go. 73s de G6XYZ
Will be getting mine next week. I was going to pick up a 7300 for just receiving but when I checked one out, the scope does not cover some of the normal broadcast bands. I understand it is only for transmitting. The 8600 was there too and this little receiver is going to be fun pulling signals in.

Many thanks for the video. The R8600 has yet to reach the UK but it is good to have an idea of the vast range of facilities the receiver. My main interest is VHF and UHF aircraft for which I use my R8500 and a R9500. What is your opinion of the R8600's performance in that area? 73s G6XYZ
Thanks, Anthony. The R8600 performs very well in the VHF and UHF areas here. I have it connected to a discone in my attic. The waterfall is great for finding intermittent signals in the tuning area. It's all very customiszable to suit your taste. It's a radio that is well worth having.
Scotty, Thanks so much for posting this video for us, the SWL and scanning community. This is very thorough and you certainly put a lot of time doing so. One question I have is----Overall, can you make a brief summary of how the 8600 compares with your 9500? Specifically, on LW/MW/HF. Audio quality, selectivity, AGC, Synch detector, etc. Thanks so much for your reply!
Audio is good but the built in speaker is on top so I use an old Altec computer speaker facing forward. When conditions are good there is little perceptible difference between the 2 radios, but when conditions are very poor the 9500 is just a bit better. The 8600 is a little more cumbersome to use due to so many controls being menu driven. The 9500 has knobs and buttons for most of the commonly used functions. I would like the 9500 to have the waterfall added to the spectrum display. At 1/5th the cost of the 9500 I would say that the 8600 is well worth the price. I have no regrets buying it.
Thanks Snell! Yes, here in Canada we get the unlocked versions of the radios. Both my R8600 and my R9500, as well as my R2 and R3, are continuous coverage over their entire tuning range. It's the same here with 'Police' scanner type radios. It made for some interesting listening back in the analog cell phone days.
TheScottytr6 hahaha quite , thanks for your reply may i ask you if you don't mind, what your recever cost ? It's not available in new zealand yet how ever it's been segested approximately 4000 nz $ which is bloody outrageous !! Thanks again, regards snell
Thanks, Snell. I ordered my R8600 from Radio World here in Toronto back in Feb. when it was first announced at $3000 CDN (3415 NZ). When it was finally released in Aug. the price was listed at $3399 CDN (3870 NZ) but the store sold it to me for the originally quoted price of $3K. I paid them almost 5 times that much for my R9500 about 10 years ago...
Hi mate. Have you connected an antenna to the hi z rca connection (ANT3) ? I have the 8600 and connect ccw active loop and 2/70 j pole antennas. I am pleased with the results. I also run a ftdx 3000 for hf and connect cobwebb, 20mtr gp vertical and 40/80 dipole. I want to utilise Ant3 on the 8600 and need guidance. Thinking about connecting ant3 rca to coax then 1.9 unun then wire. Also considering ( and I think this is correct for Ant3 connection) longwire to centre of rca connection and earth/counterpoise from rca outer. Your thoughts welcomed and appreciated. Neil (UK)
Hi Neil! I have an Alpha Delta DX-SWL connected for HF and a discone in my attic connected for UHF. They are working fine for my needs and I've never considered connecting another antenna. I love to see your results with a random wire. Thanks, Scotty.
@@TheScottytr6 hey Scotty Thanks for your quick reply. It may be a couple of weeks but I'll definitely let you know what I can do with the wire. All the best Neil
Seems to be a lot of receiver for the money. I WANT ONE!!! Good idea to put the time signal stations in a single group- for some odd reason I like to listen to them. On another note, I'd like to see WWV have an oldies month or even a week or two, broadcasting in their numerous earlier formats and indicating the period they were used. The scientific community would go totally bonkers but it would be neat IMO.
more volume !!!! please!!!!!

Thanks, Anthony! I know you will like the radio. It would be nice if they would issue a software update to add the waterfall display to the 9500.

You should increase the AF Gain of your voice man ;-)
Sorry about that. Unfortunately you can't fix the audio levels after you upload a vid.
Don' t get me wrong. It' s a nice video and many will appreciate your effort ;-)

Hi Ray. I'm very happy with the R8600. $3K is a lot for some but if you have it the radio is well worth it.

1. Audio is barely audible. 2. Please set manual focus.
nobody demonstrates vhf and uhf because it's lame. so many digital modes and it doesn't decode anything.
