- We often hear the title "National Artist" but what does it actually mean? The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) defines the title as follows:
"The Order of the National Artists Award (Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts; namely, Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, and Architecture and Allied Arts."
In this episode, find out about four National Artists, namely, Ildefonso P. Santos (+), National Artist for Architecture; Virgilio S. Almario, National Artist for Literature; Abdulmari Asia Imao (+), National Artist for the Visual Arts; and Salvador Bernal (+), National Artist for Theater Design. They speak of how they persevered in the beginning of their art journey until they were conferred with the highest recognition for the arts in this episode.

very encouraging..... I want also to pursue art..I just don't know what in particular..cause I love to write or direct for film, I love theater design, I love to draw and paint, I also can do sculpting, I also love to write fiction...... I'm like an artist with no distinction whether if I am a painter or a designer, or a sculptor...... I just want to do art. The problem is, I don't know if my parents will support me......cause like anyone believes that I can't make a living out of an art profession...... I studied Information Technology cause i know that's in demand of today.... but just one semester and one term, I decided to stop causing my Transcript of Record to be failed in all of my subjects in the second semester...... I got so much depressed with what happened, cause it became a big deal in my family and even my clan to what reason I stopped..... because of depression, It took me up to two years to recover..I still didn't even saw a professional to help me with my sadness and anxieties ..... up until now, I still don't know what to do and pursue.... I thought of teaching art.... but in where I am living, none of the educational institutions here offer an art degree except for architecture r animation... but I didn't see myself as an architect who do measurement and constructing precise lines or an animator too...... I also became afraid to waste time and money again for a degree that wouldn't guarantee me of a living to even feed myself much more to support my family............. i denounced art and my dream to be an artist since then, but I can't totally do it... I still love art, I'm still in need to grab a pencil to sketch........ I can't think of any profession aside from becoming an artist or a full art teacher (not a MAPEH teacher) . I also want to start to promote our local art and culture from my place... I also want to build someday an exhibit were I can help budding artists to present their art as well as an art workshop for anyone who like to try to do art or just be inspired for a day....I even dreamed of founding an art academy/art school.... I also wish to give opportunity to other young artists to sell their art or just to present them especially here in region ix .... I'm not so good in art at all compared to other even young artists out there, I don't think I'm skillful and full of craftsmanship...I don't think I am so great in doing art..I can't even draw or paint a realistic figure or portrait...maybe realism is not meant for me.... I'm just so passionate with art or maybe i have my own personal style, I just don't know it....... it's so difficult for me at this point. That's why I also want to tell the government to build or have even just one gallery for every region, municipality or chartered cities where upcoming budding artists like me can begin to try our journey or to test if we are really meant to be artist someday, a gallery open for young, old, younger, from different backgrounds, religions, cultures, professionals, amateur, or students. :D
