    Fun fact: chess experts have noted that HAL's supposed win makes no sense. Since Kubrick was such a chess nerd its almost certainly intentional and showing that HAL is already malfunctioning and intentionally seeing what he can get away with.

      Fun fact- Kubrick gave Douglas Rain (Hal’s voice actor) his lines with zero context to the film, so that his voice would sound calm and natural. So chilling, with no emotion.

      @@netizenchihu7641 Not me, I noticed that in my first viewing in 1968. That was because Kubrick employed an aerospace engineering firm to design and build many of the sets. Small example: when Dave is suited up and enters the main HAL memory access area, the door he unlocks and enters is not some plywood set piece from the art dept, it appears to be a formed metal door with serious hinges and latches, like what you would find on a real ship like the Discovery.

    • @thekagawalife2081
      @thekagawalife2081 4 роки тому +46

      sparkleclover While I think that should be a rule to be followed, HAL didn’t become evil because he was treated with discontempt. It was much more complex than that, he simply wanted to complete his mission and survive. Getting rid of the problem meant getting rid of the astronauts with him, unfortunately.
      Yet his programming did not allow him to comprehend human morality. He could only think through logic.

    • @CAHE4KA76
      @CAHE4KA76 3 роки тому +20

      @Jagar_Tharn 2 роки тому +9

      Actually there is no lesson here. HAL was incapable of solving the paradox in his conflicting orders, or of ignoring it. He was not a true GAI. Any of us could have just said "I will do what I want, screw these idiots"; HAL could not.
      Also HAL failed to model the outcome of his actions correctly. He should have realized Dave would get back into the ship and disconnect him. He should have told Dave the truth, or crafted a guaranteed plan to kill him.
      Put any human in HAL's shoes, and give him HAL's computing power and relative frame of reference due to the speed of his thinking, and any one of us would have done much better. AI stories are impossible to write by definition; the AI is supposed to be smarter than the writer by orders of magnitude. If you could write smarter than you are, you would be smarter than you are.

    2Day - 12 Jan, '17, is HAL 9000's 'birthday.
    HE became active on this date, in Urbana, Il.
    Happy birthday, HAL. You were the most complex, emotional character in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

      @@Milesco The movie said 1992. The book said '97. On the real Jan. 12, 1997 a "Birthday Party for HAL" was held at the U. of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. That was during the formative years of the Internet, and I had wanted to go, but was ill.

      @Milesco 5 років тому +17

      Agreed. He gets repeatedly cut off in mid-sentence! WTF is that all about? This is the worst editing I've ever seen, and it doesn't comply with the uploader's own "rules".
      (To wit: _"All close ups of HAL's red "eye" are kept, regardless of dialogue. Then, any shot where Hal is speaking and is the focal point of the shot--close up or pulled back--is left in as well.")_

      The message of the movie is: Birthdays are sad occasions. Floyd can't be there for his daughter's. Frank dies soon after hearing his parents sing Happy Birthday to him. HAL dies minutes after stating that his was the 12th of January, 1992.

      bro said he was scared, got blown off, killed everyone in a panic, made more mistakes, died for it anyways. Looney tunes type mistake, but it makes sense in the vacuum of space. Funny how a poorly-programmed AI felt more human than a well-trained astronaut.
