First computer to sing - Daisy Bell

  • "Daisy Bell" was composed by Harry Dacre in 1892. In 1961, the IBM 7094 became the first computer to sing, singing the song Daisy Bell. Vocals were programmed by John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum and the accompaniment was programmed by Max Mathews. This performance was the inspiration for a similar scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage
    I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

Have you heard of re-interpretation? Kind of how like twinkle twinkle little star played in a robotic, slightly distorted monotone can sound creepy, this is a similar affect. Of course you can see the lighthearted side but both are equally as enjoyable.

I don’t know why people say it’s scary. It’s honestly really sweet. A machine was given a voice, and out of all the songs it could have chosen, it chose a love song. It’s like it’s returning all of the love and tears that went into giving it a voice to sing with.
Even machines want to love and be loved.

Anything replicating human behavior that is not nearly perfect always makes people uneasy. It being 60 years old and made by people that are likely dead makes it much worse. The fact that it's singing a song that many parents would sing to their children makes it seem almost as though the nonhuman entity is attempting to make people relax. It's almost like a demon imitating human speech. It's difficult to rationalize fear, but I hope I can at least give you an idea of what someone might think is creepy about this.

The technological achievement of making a computer sing in 1961 is astonishing, considering that computers back then simply had no off-the-shelf capabilities for that kind of thing. Not just the hardware and the software, but the whole theoretical framework behind speech synthesis and computer-generated music had to be invented from scratch to allow this. To make one of these imposing electronic machines whimsical and charming at the same time took it to a whole other level. This was a brilliant sneak-preview demonstration of what computers were capable of.

You can even hear how it sings in the same way that a nerd asking a girl to go to the dance would sing it and how pleasantly slow it sounds. All of these details built up to this and because of their work, every other device today speaks now. I chose to experience the effect not merely give a representation of experiencing such a state. It brought authenticity to the scene and role in general. On a personal and professional level this brought a new depth and comprehension of my consciousness, readied me for my stewardship of the civilization on Europa, and put me into deeper contact with the Black Monolith alien. I trust this clears it up and speaks to the criticism.

It's only somewhat creepy because seems unfamiliar to us, mostly because technology has improved a lot since 1961.

Joshua or WOPR voice was not done with synthesis, it was done with low pas audio filters and re arranging the words to add a robotic affect to it, they did it on purpose.
