Hopefully, this answers one of the most common questions regarding Signals. This was the right time to go over this, as many of you are using trains more and had a lot of feedback stating you have been influenced by the designs of the highway and some of the train lines... Keep smiling as always, and ill see you in another video!! Also, as of releasing this video, did any of you see the New Project being designed and built for this Saturday (13.05.23) video??
I couldn't wrap my head around path signals for a very long time until someone said "path at the entrance, block at the exit", and now with your explanation, it makes complete sense. Thanks!
I'd been struggling with getting train networks to actually work. I think that whole section about leaving enough "room" before the Path Signal so the train doesn't have to slow right down, combined with putting Blocks every so often along the 'highway' parts, was what I was missing. Thanks Bitz, helps a lot.
Actual trains used that system until recently. Some parts of the world they still do. The neat trick is that the system knows a train is in the track by SHORTING the two tracks, since the wheels are steel, and the train axles are also steel. They imprint a 60Hz ac signal on it that gets shorted by each train, and the blocks are separated by a large control box that jumps the signal from block to block.
Thank you so much for going into such detail about the coloring of the tracks and what each signal does, you were the third video I watched. The first two just said "do this then do this" but didn't explain why well enough.
Ive watched this video so often and everytime i boot up satisfactory i forget about the Signals so i come here everytime to understand it again thx bro 😅
Great job explaining exactly how this works! I watched at least 3 other videos before I got to yours and they all failed to explain it logically enough for me to absorb it. I don't have that problem anymore! Thank you!
I also have some signal advice for you guys. I often see people (including Bitz sometimes 😉) struggle to place the signal to the direction they want. Instead of aiming left or right of the rail, aim directly at the rail. depending on which side of the connection you aim, the direction of the signal changes.
Got it. Path signals on inbounds, block signals on outbounds to limit the intersection block. And then give ample space before a path signal for path registering (and I assume a bit of breaking distance since trains can't stop on a dime) It's basically like Transport Tycoon!
One tip for single rail pioneers...don't do it...I've tried...12 times or 4 different saves. You will fail and have multiple stare down scenarios. Why I am saying is cuz, most fresh pioneers try using path signals when they only have single bidirectional tracks. The path signal logics don't apply there. You need to have dedicated train lines that cannot be crossed over by trains but are still crossing each other for path signals to work. Key terms "Trains cannot cross tracks, but tracks themselves are crossing each other". That scenario only comes when using uni-directional tracks. Moreover, the only sure fire way to divert single rail staredown issue is to build double uni-directional rails.
I have watched four videos by established streamers before this one and still didn't "get it" until this one. I was honestly at a point where I was ready to spend time on another game... Thanks Bitz!
Way better explanation than what anyone else has! I'm probably gonna have to rework my whole rail network to make space for dual rails everywhere since that seems to be how most people do it.
So far the best 1 i have seen. What i always say with path signals the train need to ask if it can go past the signal?? I noticed it is at your water factory, if you place the path signal at the station every train leaving that station has first go
Great explanation Bitz. a tip from me, for myself i also place 1 very long block path on a straight track. this prevents trains from getting to close to eachother.
Beautiful video but you only described one feature of path signals. When an automated train asks for a path the path signal not only communicates with the path signals at the other entrances but also with the block signal at the end of the requested path. Only if that block signal is green the path will be granted making sure the train can always exit the section and not permanently blocking it. The exit block will also be reserved and block other trains from entrering from a different direction. Another feature is that path signals can be daisy chained. All the path signals along the path will turn green as soon as the first path signal does. But at the end of the chain there must always be a block signal which basically controls the whole path.
Thanks for making this video! I was very confused about what path signals did and had used them for almost all of my rail system. Now I was able to fix it and my trains are running much more efficiently! Thanks :)
8:20 The most useful piece of advice about Path signals EVER! I thought the flashing ! simply meant "WRONG!!!! Try again and again and again and again!!!"

Hey Brother, I was beyond confused on how to use path signals properly. This saves so many brain cells and time to try to figure it out all the time. Being from Canada direction of traffic is super fun to look at because we drive on the other side of the road. Thx for the major clarifications on this Fideo(meant to do that) Cheers Fiddy

@3:00 into the video, how on earth do you make those frame pillar arches over the rails??? I can't get mine to snap in the positions you have the horizonal pillars going in!
Your video was very helpful, thanks! I still have some optimizing to do so the trains don't slow down as much entering and leaving, but at least the paths are working now. Cheers.
I'm glad the game designers didn't input speed limits in curves for trains to stave off derailment too. That would be so freaking hard to code I understand but IRL trains really have to slow down in curves to not fall over. From working on a real railroad myself for almost 3 years, that description was excellent, not just for the game mechanics, but for what real signals actually do..
dont know if you'll ever see this, but what if trains cross each other at right angles? that's my current issue, but may redesign after seeing this. I've proven the signals don't allow a train track to loop back on to itself if there is a pathing intersection along it's route.

@@ItsBitz First thank you both for the answers.
