- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star Anya Taylor-Joy joins British GQ as she revisits some of the most notable film characters in her career so far: from playing Casey Cooke in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split to her leading role as Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit.
“I was very lucky to have a dance background,” explains Taylor-Joy as she breaks down her portrayal of Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit. “Ballet specifically was really helpful in terms of discipline and understanding choreography. Pretty early in her career to do this but she still already has filmography most actors could only dream to have. She's doesn't even have to talk because of those giant beautiful and expressive eyes. No Menu? I loved that movie.
I too loved “The Menu” but she doesn’t get to do a whole lot compared to the rest of her work; she still does a lot but it’s right on the edge of “skilled, accomplished, but less special”

@michaelmoraga2926 well it can buy skill, that's the point. She's obviously immensely talented and she deserves all that credit. But the point of money buying opportunities is that it buys you time and energy and the best study avenues to cultivate skills. You need to take advantage of it, but money does have the ability to buy skills. Just not innate talent.
@@writerchick94 same with Timothée Chalamet like his parents have direct links to the film industry besides being rich and his fans act like having the title of being one of the youngest oscar nominated actor came with his effort or talent alone like look at the connections he has in the industry and they instantly try to act like his parents efforts didn't play a part in his success when clearly it did
The Menu deserved mention here. That was a fine performance by Taylor-Joy. She is the real deal.

Why was Last Night in Soho not spoken about??? Or The Menu??? She was spectacular in Last Night in Soho. As soon as I saw her in The Witch I was mesmerized by Anya. Her look is so striking and captivating. She's so incredible.

I think LNIS didn’t get tons of recognition because the ending kinda ruined it and made no sense. The Menu was much better and should have gotten way more recognition.
I love Edgar wright, hot fuzz is in my top 10 of all time but LNIS wasn’t a great movie, better than most I usually watch but not up to his standards

That scene at the end of The Queen's Gambit makes me cry every single time.

she was teased as a kid, but she is drop-dead gorgeous now & her "weird" eyes and flawless skin are the reason
Definitely doesn't fit the mold of "conventionally attractive" with her wide-set eyes, big nose, overbite, and weak chin. But she proves that you don't have to be conventionally attractive to be beautiful. Her unusual face is part of what makes her so captivating to watch.

Last night in soho was the first movie I saw her in and I’m glad I saw it because the clues were very well placed. It wasn’t dragged on, everything just fit because Edgar who directed the movie wanted the audience to know that he wasn’t going to glamourise the sixties!
Such a sophisticated and well spoken person. Her voice is insanely lovely to listen to. Thank god she's part of the next generation of actors.
She reminds me of the great actors of the silver screen. There’s a dignity and elegance to her that is rarely seen today!

She spoke about that in an interview a while back! Anya didn't learn to speak English until she was 7, and was raised on both sides of the pond, so she didn't grow up with an "English" or "American" standard accent. Instead, she speaks Spanish with an Argentine accent and English with whatever accent is most common in the room.

such a true acctress....the way she speaks about her craft! So bright, eloquent and charismatic...not to mention the amount of grace, sophistication and wisdom way beyond her years. She's by far the most phenomenal, versatile, magnetic and gifted actress to have come out these past 10 years. Only 28 and already a titan, and from day dot. Such deep, instinctive understanding of each of her characters and such profound empathy for them all. She is so unique and particular, inside and out. So expressive, such passion oozing out of her in every film. She has such full comprehension about the process of movie making and everything and everyone involved in it, from costars to directors to crew. And I love how much she seeks to learn from every new moviemaking experience, absorbs everything and builds on her craft each time. You can tell how much respect she has for it all. She's such a natural pro. Some people were put on this earth to do a very specific thing, and this is hers. She was made for this, and we are so grateful that we get to see it all unfold. Her brilliance truly knows no bounds. I will watch her in anything, everything she touches turns to gold. What a woman.

13:15 I very much agree. Thomasin's anger was the perfect interpretation for the character at that moment. It speaks about the false accusation of being a witch, of being evil, a rotating thing for women, especially when it comes to religious contexts. Anger is an almost vengeful emotion in some ways, much more rebellious than tears.

She is a rare combination of exceptional talent, exceptional looks, high intelligence and impeccable work ethics. And she has a really pleasant voice. Something tells she can identify with all those lonely isolated characters she plays so well.
The Witch is one of my favourite movies... the use of old language throughout takes intelligence to portray... Ralph Ineson is legendary, so I love that Anya learned so much from him. She enjoys the whole filmmaking process from all angles and departments that I wouldn't be surprised to see her creating something from behind the camera at some point. She is so stunning to look at... a true ethereal beauty.
i think anya have this beautiful filmography at a young age is bec she's so eloquent and smart. she knows what a good film is and just how involved she is in her film shows it all, i will not be shocked if one day she became a director and/or a writer
