Don't say you have a hard time saying no. That's why your going to have a large and successful excavation company for years to come. Because you do the right thing. Great Video.
Out of the guys I watch on here, you're definitely the best eyeballing grade on a loader. You did a great job with what you had, homeowner was happy, all you can ask for.
Hey Brandon! You're a professional operator and business owner, and you're successful because you're able to size up a job, mentally develop a workable plan for said job and deliver results. Quality work doesn't cost, it pays! When confronted with a challenge (read no decent material on site) a budget that's non-existent, and expected to deliver stunning results, you work with what you have (on-site) and deliver a fine rough grade result. In the case of this homeowner calamity, you greatly improved his drainage pitch, roughed out a subgrade that's workable to the driveway edge as he marked in green, and reshaped his entire back yard. Because of the fine work around the house, he then extends the job scope to include the driveway, and again you professionally regraded it with crown and pitch, using only material on site. 5 stars bud! I really enjoy these dilemma videos showing the "poor homeowner" who's suffering option paralysis because his friend "knows a guy with a skid steer" Conclusion, hire the professional who does this for a living and knows what works, looks good, and lasts! Work safe, stay warm, and keep having some fun out there, I got your back brother! Doug@ the "ranch"

Check out the Domor style grader boxes. I built one last spring for a half mile driveway rehab. Got about $300 in salvage materials and a couple rainy days in it. It's not motor grader perfect but makes quick work of a rough driveway like that. Great job and video as well. I feel ya with the helping a friend jobs. They suck at the moment but they pay off down the road.

Once again, IF they had listened to you in the first place, they would have saved money. I get these kind of jobs all the time either somebody’s are already been there and tried their hand at it or nobody wants it in the first place, apparently I love those jobs because I never turn them down, I take near impossible ideas and turn them into reality, I guess I like doing what others say can’t be done and usually I do this with a small budget, you did a good job with what you had to work with sometimes that’s all you can do ever if it’s not up to your standards, I’m that way as well but the customer is happy that’s always the end goal, enjoyed the video buddy

Elite Earthworks LLC I meant my customers put pic on Facebook, my wife is still setting up my Facebook page, if I had your email I would send you some pictures of jobs I’ve done
THANK YOU,and yes it is hard to say NO,we try to help out maybe we where in that state one time but you never what the sh## jobs may bring down the road.it looks nice sir.
People don't understand that grading is very important on your house. Have to get water to drain away from your home. Keeps foundation dry. Wood doesn't rot. Having enough dirt brought in to raise foundation up so you can make it drain properly.
Saying no is difficult some times. Try using one of these five phrases: "now is not a good time", "I can't commit right now", "no thank you", "I'm not taking on anything else right now", "I have other commitments". I'm still trying to use these myself. I hope they help you.
Thanks for the video. My guess is the following: The homeowner doesn't care at all about the yard or driveway. He built the house (sort of), ran low on money. Needed a home loan, they wanted a house that there was some chance of selling if the loan ever defaulted; they wanted a "yard" 20 feet from the house and also a little improvement to the driveway before they'd release the money. The other contractors who looked at the job had bids too high for his near zero budget. Someone at the bank knew Elite Earthworks did excellent work at reasonable prices, they told the homeowner: if Elite does the work and is happy with the job we'll release the money. Homeowner paid the lowest price possible with no excavation or topsoil delivered, homeowner really doesn't care. Bank now thinks you did one of you excellent jobs here. You probably could have put 40-80 more hours in that job along with a large number of truck deliveries. grumble grumble.
David Null thank you for watching! You hit the nail in the head sir. I think that’s exactly how things went down. Judging by how the fence looked and the retaining wall in the backyard the homeowner didn’t really care how it looked I believe it was more so the bank. You could have easily spent that much time there. I appreciate the comment 👍🏻
Goodness Gracious what a mess! I’m the same as you though, I need to learn to say no as well. You’re gonna do all this and then they’re gonna come back and put in walks and landscape beds. Nice work though, you’ve got that nice and slicked off looks like for what you had to work with.
Yeah. Unless the property owner is standing right there, it's hard for them to see the difference even after your doing a lot of work. Maybe after he and his buddy having played with it, he'll appreciate how much goes into it.
FishFind3000 After looking at what needed to be done, I think I'd charge $500.00 an hour with a 4 hour minimum. That should send the tightwads running for the hills. Lol.
Yeah, I can tell you're not thrilled with it, but, man, that looks great to me! Looks a lot better than it did! So, when you do a driveway, do you generally put any crown on it? If so, how do you accomplish that with a bucket? Thanks for the video! Excellent work as always!
BurningDinosaurs thanks buddy! Yeah I try to put a bit of a crown in it, I try to get the outside track a touch lower than the one in the middle of the drive and that kinda angles the road but after you track it in it leaves it more of a crown. However the tracks sit is the angle the bucket is. Thanks again
@@eliteearthworksllc Yeah, same with a tractor - it follows the rear tires since the front pivot - makes it hard with a loader. But I've got a 3pt blade that I can angle, it works OK - it needs a hydraulic cylinder to give it more adjustability. You need to get one of them fancy Dir Perfect grader attachments lol! Thanks for the info!
Dirt Mover I wasn’t super impressed with it, just because the machine is so short and almost not quick enough to move the blade up and down if you run into low spots. It would probably work ok on gravel but it’s definitely not a dozer
It stinks grading a road that long , it seams like your getting no where fast , I usually do a it 100' to 200' at a time otherwise you spend to much time going backwards . I always wondered if something like the bobcat tilt tach would make putting on a crown a road a lot easier . Looks like they need a lot more topsoil around the house . going to be hard to get grass to grow in that junk dirt and all the rocks in it when they do mow
For lack of better choice of words you turned a turd I take a Rose on the yard job👍 Making out my wish list for Santa thinking GoPro never owned one 7 black or 8 black any suggestions?
Sometimes just have to say no. Friend with skid steer didn't know what he was doing. Have to pay for good work and someone that takes pride in their work and their name.
You need to learn DEFY TO BUY It's a theory that you never say no to business, but if it is a job you do not want to do, or do not feel comfortable doing you price it in a way that you defy the customer to hire you. If they do hire you, you have built enough money into your bid to CYA, (cover your @$$) and can take your time, or hire help, or rent equipment, whatever is needed to complete the job. In this case, he presented to you with a story that he has tried it many times, has had other companies tell him no, etc, that should be the red flag that you don't want the job and the last thing you need to do is price it at a discount. Price the job in a way that defies the customer to hire you unless he really is desperate, and then you can be safe in doing it, and laugh all the way to the bank. Remember, as a small business owner, PROFIT, is not a bad word, without it, you are not a small business owner for long.
Badgermatt75 2016 very true buddy! That’s usually what I try to do with most jobs. Price them where I can take the time I need to be happy with the job. Your right it’s definitely a red flag and I guess that’s why I gave him a day and a price that was worthwhile for me to be there for a day. These are also great learning experiences cause you never forget them and always remember when you look at another job like it. Thanks again man!
Interesting that the homeowners aspiration for their dream home is to please the banker.... The definition of mediocrity is accepting a minimum standard.... but then again my wife’s minimum standard for how she wants the carpets vacuumed is about 5 levels above my best performance. I guess my point is... everyone’s standards are different... and she has no problem letting me know that mine aren’t high enough to do housework! SO.... I don’t! Nice job nonetheless... keep working with those sows ears... you’ll get a bolt of silk to sew someday!
William Harris yeah that’s what surprised me, it’s a brand new house and everything was a mess. The fence was terrible none of the post lined up. Lol your right everyone has different standards. It’s tough to get into house work for me too. Thanks again
@@eliteearthworksllc It's like some people either don't care or are too cheap to do the job right the first time. I think I would have declined after hearing several others had looked at the same job.
William Matthews I think you’re right. I would have but the friend of mine at the bank was wanting to wrap up the loan and they have to have the yard seeded strawed to sign off on it.
he shou;da paid you to do the job properly in the first place ..... might have cost a little more intially but the afterwards would look great :) and pay for itself down the track

D C yeah when he was showing my everything I was like I need to dig all that out and the same there and here 😁. He said his friend needed money no he needs to find a day job 🤣🤣
D C or, and I’m just spit balling here... he can send his “buddy” in with a “bob kitten” to charge double, and then come in at the end and charge triple to make it look more professional. Triple the profits a third of the work. Who’s got who’s best interest in mind, I’ll tell ya what
See I am NOT Elite nice cause everytime I have got to come back and price it the price goes up. You said he has had 5 other guys there and no one could finish it up.. price just doubled for that knowledge. Gotta watch it guys like that have you come out say what you need to do.... then try to get their buddy to do just that. Your skill and knowledge is worth $ it's ok to be nice but dont get taken advantage of either.
Mrs. S.O.T. Metalworks yeah I really wasn’t even going to do it but my friend at the bank was really wanted to finish so they could wrap up the loan. But I agree with you the price must go up 👍🏻

I wonder if one of those 6 way Dozer blades are any good I’ve never tried one have you?
Wjamesm that’s a good idea too. I’m sure it would help with a crown. Yeah definitely will need dirt thanks again
For lack of better choice of words you turned a turd I take a Rose on the yard job👍
Making out my wish list for Santa thinking GoPro never owned one 7 black or 8 black any suggestions?
Lol yep! I would get the GoPro hero 7 to me it’s a much better all around camera
Was expecting an amount charged based off the thumbnail/title
I’ll have to look it up this was a while back
It's like trying to fix a car using broken car parts.
You do what you can to get a decent result.
The road was good anyway.
Making it Happend 🤣exactly! Thanks you!
Dang. And I thought I was a tightwad.
William Matthews 🤣 this guy takes the cake
@@eliteearthworksllc And I bet he didn't pay much for that cake. Lol.
William Matthews 🤣🤣
William Matthews 😂
I like when customers want to help me help them save themselves money by costing me money
Jake Rawls 🤣 exactly isn’t it great
Sometimes just have to say no. Friend with skid steer didn't know what he was doing. Have to pay for good work and someone that takes pride in their work and their name.
Larry Shedd that’s right!
You could have came and got my grader attachment.
Larry Shedd appreciate that
It was probably Chris uncle John from Let's dig 18
John M. Evangelis 🤣probably
you made it right
Thank you!
Why was the cheapest? Because of lack of material, labor and size of project?
Yeah all I did was rough grade a bit and he was happy with it. I think I made like $900 lol
Nothing like trying to make honey out of dog-sh&t keep at it.
barry hansen 🤣 no kidding it’s just tough to get into it when they don’t care
@@eliteearthworksllc It's like some people either don't care or are too cheap to do the job right the first time. I think I would have declined after hearing several others had looked at the same job.
William Matthews I think you’re right. I would have but the friend of mine at the bank was wanting to wrap up the loan and they have to have the yard seeded strawed to sign off on it.
he shou;da paid you to do the job properly in the first place ..... might have cost a little more intially but the afterwards would look great :) and pay for itself down the track
Charles Serong I agree I think he buddy was really bugging him to do though
Coulda did my yard cheaper buttttt noooooooo
JasonWorksAlot 🤣 I probably could have! But nothing is ever cheap with you 🤣🤣😘
Elite Earthworks LLC hey I’m a cheap date. You took me to the Golden Corral for Vday last year...🙄
Elite Earthworks LLC 😂😂
JasonWorksAlot I know how to treat a lady 😎🤣
Elite Earthworks LLC anxiously awaiting Mrs elites response...
I can hear how overly excited you are about this job 😂. Its obvious his friend doesnt know how to run the skid steer because he keeps calling you. You could tell him every time your friend comes here with the skid his skid steer...im charging you double to fix the mess. 🤷♂️😂😂
Who’s got who’s best interest in mind, I’ll tell ya what
JasonWorksAlot 🤣🤣 🤫 don’t be telling all my secrets
Elite Earthworks LLC said, no he needs to find a day job. LMAO 😂😂😂😂
JasonWorksAlot 🤔😁
See I am NOT Elite nice cause everytime I have got to come back and price it the price goes up. You said he has had 5 other guys there and no one could finish it up.. price just doubled for that knowledge. Gotta watch it guys like that have you come out say what you need to do.... then try to get their buddy to do just that. Your skill and knowledge is worth $ it's ok to be nice but dont get taken advantage of either.
Mrs. S.O.T. Metalworks yeah I really wasn’t even going to do it but my friend at the bank was really wanted to finish so they could wrap up the loan. But I agree with you the price must go up 👍🏻
Or big deals fat alice
gavin hirt 🤣 that would have been great. He told me I could use it just have to come pick it up 😏
@@eliteearthworksllc it's what 12hrs one way no big deal lol
gavin hirt 17hrs one way 🤣
Just walk away. Your way to kind
BZ1340 thanks 🤣 I should have

Richard Harach I agree but that’s what they were looking for I guess
