    Thanks for the upload Rolf! This was one of the most inspired tracks I ever composed. I remember exactly where I was (location) and with whom... and what substances I was enjoying at the time (coffee, chocolate, and tobacco)

    I have replied to many posts here over time. My last replies didn't show up at the right "place" (technical UA-cam error I guess), but it's great to see the responses from everyone! :-)

      Jeroen Tel
      This is when we behold your magic at our very eyes, in the form of waveforms at dawn of electronic music. For some reason, seeing the wave stretches ans compresses as its pitch shifts always lightens me. Makes me curious how its frequency domain will look like.

      This song reminds me of Follin for some reason.. :) That in itself is a good thing cause the Follins had perhaps the best sound routine at the time... it ate CPU but man what sounds.

    Absolutely gorgeous! Seeing the 3 channels independently and all with the waves phase-aligned its pure class. PWM Galore!

      It's called "guru meditation"... something everybody needs more of in this chaotic crazy world of ours! When composing the original intro melody of this tune I was heavily sedated by coffee, chocolate, and tobacco. And of course the ever-inspiring god of music... whoever he is, I owe him one! :-)
      (That's the most hippie reply I could ever post to any video). :P

    • @SendyTheEndless
      @SendyTheEndless 8 років тому +21

      It's satisfying because you can see a complicated composition broken down into simple mathematical shapes, you get an idea of how the physics of sound works, you can see correlations between octave and wavelength, learn how different gemoetries sound in different combinations, etc... In short it's like a form of synaesthesia.

    • @ianalanneilgrant4626

      Because the first minute is entirely PWM and AM square waves! It's unbelievable!

      I always remember I read the c64 Book: "... you can generate music with 3 or 4 sorts of waves...". I think WTF, that doesnt work! But now you can see it! Thats great!

  • @robbiew73
    @robbiew73 5 років тому +12

    I think what probably makes this so good a tune is that the instruments used in the intro have a very clean sound to them.. and the section at around 2:10 almost sounds like Jeroen's style of an arrangement was based on music from medieval England.

    I don't think I can say enough nice things about this piece, its in my top #3 faves from my long time friend. That intro is so moving. I've heard it done in so many different ways, from symphonies, to PC covers, and IMO the C64 will always sound the best. The main portion of the song sounds very heavily classically influenced which I love, but still that JT hard rock style which really propels what is already classical genius into a masterpiece. The part around 2:06 really breaks it up well with a nice Folk-styled intermission, then some nice atmosphere to bring it back. Love you brother !! \m/

    • @drumphil00
      @drumphil00 8 років тому +3

      :) what reverb. ain't no reverb unit on a SID chip. Look up the C64 SID chip, and it's capabilities, and be even more amazed at what it can do.
      A closer look at the oscilloscope graphics may give you a few hints as to what is actually happening that creates the sound you are hearing.

    • @ImperatorGrausam
      @ImperatorGrausam 8 років тому +11

      drumphil00 It isn't really "reverb", but it's the triangle waves at the beginning, which add to the square wave, making it sound like reverb.

    • @drumphil00
      @drumphil00 8 років тому +9

      A repeated version of the same thing (with some variations) with a delay, and some pitch modulation, as far as I can tell. But hey, I'm just a drummer. :P

      Jeroen Tel
      Yeah Rednomad, it was a simulated "reverb" making use of a softer version of the main lead sound with the other 2 channels... with a delay... :-)
      The closest I could get to get to a "reverb" on the Commodore 64 SID chip.

    Omg this is top.. I've listened to the full music back there when I was a child, playing hours with Supremacy and often letting the whole track just go and then repeat, repeat, repeat.. once my mother was pretty angry because I was late from lunch despite several warnings, just because of this track. LoL. So amazing hearing these tunes on a modern, great hi-fi. And believe me the SID's sound is a jaw-dropping experience on a decent audiophile hi-fi. Just look at the spectrogram (e.g. in Foobar2000). LoL. This is a true masterpiece of SID programming. Thank you for the upload, I'm in love again (and still) :))

    Hearing this makes me picture the ending to a video game where the hero, after defeating the final boss, ascends to godhood.
    There's the death of the final opponent until 0:33. Then, everything resets to zero, progressively dimming into a blinding light, surrounding the protagonist, zooming in from the edges of the universe until they are alone against the white background - until 1:06.
    At that moment, a beat starts to radiate from them - their heartbeat, which is now the very beat of time itself. They move their hands and clench their palms ; and thus, light runs from their hand to the infinite. They smile and repeat the experience, creating a rainbow of all EM frequencies from radio to gamma ; in this instant, in one beat of their heart, matter has been recreated, stars have lived and died, planets have been created and obliterated. The intensity of the waves grow until 1:21.
    Then, they transform. They start to move ; and in their flying around the dimensions of time and space, realities collide and diverge, in what seems to them like hundredths of a second. They lose their human limbs, their human skin, their human face, their human bodies and brains. They are a focused consciousness existing and surviving from nothing, and flying around alone in nothing, observing all that they create just by existing and moving. This lasts up to 2:06.
    Just as the tune changes, the single point of consciousness they form spreads infinitely in all directions and populates every bit of empty space there is as well as any particle of matter. They transcend the time they have redefined and now exist everywhere, in everything, in infinite forms, watching all at once. This transformation is over at 2:15.
    Now that their ascension is complete, they can only watch ; as, like the encore at 2:20 and on tells us, another brave hero will come and challenge their position to take their place and create another universe, repeating the everlasting cycle of Supremacy.
    3:47 : Roll credits.
