As a hardened saab enthusiast whos been working on them for 20 years i can tell you there is something very wrong with that 9-5. 209hp is woeful for that engine. These things solider on past 200k and hold the power way up there unless theres a fault. Needs a full service with all filters and most importantly fresh plugs that are gapped correctly. The DI cassette is probably the original and very weak aswell. Also check vaccum lines and that the original dump valve isn’t internally leaking. Not many people understand or know just how ahead of its time or how powerful the trionic 7 management system was. As for rust… that is a really really… really bad one.
I very much agree with you, but then again, the BMW came from a mechanic (which also had former tuning). As for the Saab history; who knows?! Bit of an unfair comparison, really. This episode is definitely starting to channel towards TG/TGT vibes, which is awesome, so we gotta take these cars with a grain of salt. ;)
Or they are WHP figures from the hub dyno (not corrected for drivetrain losses) and the BMW has been previously mapped? Putting more power through the FWD Saab is not going to be that effective/rewarding compared to how well known those BMWs are for responding to a few mods.
KUDOS to Hammond to keep the spirit of Top Gear and The Grand Tour alive... This is a regular old cheap car challenge just like the good old days... I love it...
100% - I owned an E46 330i Touring recently (also in Mystic Blue!), from factory it's coded to do that if you *hold* the unlock button, and close them all if you hold the lock button. Very handy in hot weather!
Very fond memories passengering in my Dads Saab 9-5 HOT Aero down to Le Mans in 2002! Not only could it hustle with the best of the sports/supercars on the motorway but in absolute comfort! It was a young me's dream trip and it will live with me forever! The Aero is an undercover rocketship! And seeing the Dewalt Morgans, X-Power MGs, Bentley Speed 8s and HEARING the Panoz... unforgettable!
I had one. It was absolutely lovely. One of my all time best cars. Like driving on a cloud. And fast! As you say totally on comfort. Great cars. It really is sad that they don't exist anymore.

Before you say anything; yes I’ve owned other cats as well, amongst them I’ve ever speced then myself so there is plenty of experience with other brands as well.
Someone has to do it.(not that other channels have not already and still do mimic this sort of thing) Shame he is not using Willow, Izzy and perhaps his wife to do these sort of challenges. As that would be far more interesting choices than these 2 people.
That's the thing about the 95. I have hit way over UK speed limits in one of these and you just don't notice, because there is no difference in the handling between 70 and 120 mph. Just as smooth and wafty even at high speed.
The rear inner arches on that Saab are totally gone and will need a tonne of welding. I know this first hand :D Also the Saab's EVAP system is most likely broken which means he is losing boost. "Bolt mod" would have fixed it.
You need to change the DI pack on that Saab and check the vacuum lines. Most likely the reason why it's down on power. These things make awesome sleepers, I used to have a 400bhp one and it was enormous fun

i've been lucky enough to own a couple of GM900 turbos, and they absolutely shifted, i lived in bristol and had to regularly travel down to yeovil for work, but i always arrived with a smile on my face. comfortable, smooth and very very quick, so it didnt matter if i took motorway or the back roads it took about the same time!
I've been looking for a 9-5 aero wagon 5spd for so long. They all suffer from that rear wheelarch rust. I've actually moved to a 3series wagon. The bodys hold up so much better
@@kennorcott7074 those 9-5's rot everywhere. I had -02, it had rear wheel arches, trunklid, sideskirts rusted beyond repair. It's sad because they are good cars.
I've got 3 x 9-5 Aeros and whilst I agree they are now of an age where rust is a major issue, I'm yet to be convinced they are worse than many other 20+ year old cars. From what I see the typical 3 series of that age (or even younger) are often noticeably rusty around the bodywork. As another example I see many VAG cars 10 years younger with shameful amounts of rust. My oldest Aero just turned 25 years old 2 days ago (one of the oldest still on the road in the UK) and still pretty solid, the other two are both 2004 and are succumbing to the GM cost cutting and are not fairing so well.
No wheel arch rust on my 9-5. If they are looked after they are great. More comfortable than a 3 series (i’ve had one of them too and they rust like mad!) and bigger and faster too
That Saab is definitely not running right. I have a phase 1 2.3t, was 185bhp from factory but its been Noobed, running a bigger intercooler, intake and 3" downpipe and im up at 260-ish. That Aero HOT should still hit 250bhp easily

My E46 touring sat like that. It’s probably standard. I absolutely flipping loved my 330i touring, I did 200k miles in it, never had one engine fault, ran smooth as butter all day long. I also think the facelift was the best looking 3 series to date.
Had two E39 530d Tourings with 424k km and 385k km on the clock.. These engines last forever if well maintained. Absolutely loved them, especially the first one. Had full house with double layer windows and stuff like that

pretty sure that Comfort opening stuff on your BMW is only supposed to work if you HOLD the UNLOCK button for as long as it takes the windows to open, or hold the lock button as long as it takes for them to close. At least, that's how Mercedes has done it, both in our old 1990 E (W124) and current 2016 E (W212).

A few years ago I bought a 2006 3.0 TDI Audi A6 Avant on a whim (it was a challenge for my UA-cam channel, which is almost as successful as Drivetribe LOL), it cost me £1,480 and it's genuinely one of the best cars I've ever had. I was sad to see it go and I do still miss it. Who doesn't love a cheap estate?
I bought a E46 touring 220i petrol straight 6 touring. Done it up to a nice spec and spent a few quid on mechanicals. But absolutely bang on now. Wicked car

Saab were told here’s a vectra we want you to use as much of it as possible. Apparently they used less than 15% and that’s why Vauxhall wanted to shut them down lol

Owned many e46's over the years and i absolutely miss my 330ci msport, could drive it flat out everywhere and i could get to work faster than i can now in my current car with more than 100bhp extra, such a great chassis.
As the happy owner of an 07 plate 95 Aero Estate, I bought over 5 years ago, for half what you paid, with no rust (still), fast enough to make me grin (still) I think this video says more about your car buying skills than anything else. £2k for that shed? You could have got a 300bhp, near mint one for that! 😂
With those old 3.0d autos you have to hit kick down or use sport mode as the gearbox learns your driving style and they can be slow if tootled about in.
Absolutely loving the new series! Only thing I would say is that the music in the background of every single clip is super distracting, would perhaps prefer something a little more RAW?? I know people eye roll whenever UA-cam content creators fan boy about the E46 but I’m a proud owner of a 2005 330ci and it’s genuinely one of the best all rounders and cars to drive that I have owned, period. Also, showing my age thinking you were calling the car Meg rather than Salem 😂 Plus that M57 engine is a sensation.

Put a 19t turbo on the 9-5 and it can easily reach 310hp. It is just bolt-on. Of course you also need a ECU remap, larger injector and a healthy fuel pump.
I absolutely love saabs and looking for a 9-3 estate currently, but how did you manage to find the worst 9-5 in the country and pay a enormous 2k for it 🤣 doesn't add up , I walked away from a nice 9-3 estate with 120k for 1.2k in black no rust only reason I want something a bit less millage before I do a full rebuild and upgrade in a couple of years

Isn't 209bhp about right for the 2.3T as opposed to the 2.3t or the 2.3 AERO?

I loved my 95. I had the 2 litre. It topped out at 130mph, but on the autobahn it would happily sit at 130mph as long as it had fuel in it.

@nekite1 100mph in my swift sport vs 100mph in my 9-5 aero are completely different experiences. One is buttery smooth and the other is terrifying.
I had my old 9-3 off the 150mph clocks.....more than once...But that was tuned a bit

Saabs are quick but out of the box, 0-60 isnt its strong point. Once on the move it feels a lot quicker, once the turbo has had a chance to spool up

Can confirm, my old E34 steering wheel started doing the same thing. Thankfully, reupholster kits are cheap and easy to do yourself.

I absolutely love saabs and looking for a 9-3 estate currently, but how did you manage to find the worst 9-5 in the country and pay a enormous 2k for it 🤣 doesn't add up , I walked away from a nice 9-3 estate with 120k for 1.2k in black no rust only reason I want something a bit less millage before I do a full rebuild and upgrade in a couple of years
