Coming from the Military, Merrill was really big in early 2000's and dominated the high end boot market. I was never a fan and find it hard to believe that they have made a top 5 trail shoe. Maybe its time to give them another look. Great Vid.

Great review of the years shoes. After your first review I went for the Merrell Agility Peak 5 as I loved the Speedgoat 3. Have to say they have been awesome, worked perfectly for me at Hurtwood 50 this weekend. Spot on with the Kinvara Pro! Think prices on some are getting a little crazy for the average runner. Keep up the great work 👍👍👍

@@pete801 Don't get me wrong I love my Trabuco Max 2's but for me they are my "training day trail shoe" for any events I do then I'm in the Ultrafly, I personally find them to work really well for me, I've got a 50k Ultra this weekend and they'll be on my feet 😁

    • @paulmulks
      @paulmulks 9 місяців тому +1

@@pete801 The Deviate Nitro 2 is far better than the first version. I had the v1 but sold them after only running about 30 miles in them as I had all sorts of heel slippage issues and the ride was just boring. I didn't bother getting the Nitro 2 until recently when they were on sale but blimey what a massive improvement they are! No slippage issues and just a lot more responsive to run in, so I would definitely recommend them. I'd also recommend trying the asics Glideride 3 as they are are really good daily trainer, I've just retired my pair with nearly 500 miles on them 👌🏻

Currently breaking in a pair of Asics Novablast 3. I used to always run in UA Mega clone (had the 2 and 3) but wanted a lighter shoe, so far they have been really good and can’t wait to get some serious miles in them.
Trail wise I’ve just got a pair of Inov-8 roclite ultra G 320, I got these because my current trail shoes are only good for light trails due to a very shallow lug. I’m hoping to see your full in depth review of the Roclites soon.

Gary’s House review on the Lidl gear is hilarious! I want to try the merrels but I’m worried they won’t be narrow enough with a small enough toe box and too much stack when you’re moving fast. Did get the long sky2s but need to change them to go down a size. I roll my ankles in stacked shoes moving fast being dragged by a dog which slightly be interested about these facts!

You had me there for a second on the Lidl shoe 🤣. Ive just bought some Peregrine ST with the nice deep lugs and cheese wire (which ive never been a fan of previously but may have been swayed) and they are awesome in the Deep Devon mud. I also got Suacony Ride 16 and non ST Peregrines so im covered for all occasions (but dont tell the wife (thanks Klarna)). I do like the look of the Merrells but im covered for all terrains now. #sauconyfanboy

I have the Peregrine 13 ST's as well. I wanted to love them but I find them downright dangerous on wet rocks and roots. If they only used Vibram these shoes would be perfect. I switched to the Scarpa Spin ST's for the reallly boggy stuff. They are superb once they break in

Pretty good choices, I do find it frustrating how narrow shoe makes are going. I’m tall and skinny but I still found the Mafate’s too narrow and went for the Speedgoat 5’s instead. Same with Xodus Ultra, great for up to 50k but longer than that when feet swell just too narrow. I might try the Merrell’s in 2024.

Lloyd I think someone needs to inform the Salomon design team this. Make the Genesis a 4mm drop and put the Thundercross outsole on it. They will then have a near perfect shoe. Only improvement would be to ditch the Contigrip and start using a Vibram MegaGrip.

Even though I buy too many trail shoes, I've actually tried none of the ones on your list, even the honourable mentions! I'll have to remedy that. Very interested in the Summit Unknowns as I've always used NB for road shoes. How are they on wet rock type terrain?
My favourite shoe this year, which I know you reviewed, was the Salomon Ultra Glide 2. Seems they fixed all the issues with it that I had. Now if they did that with the Thundercross for next year, that would be an unbeatable shoe for me.

Excellent comment about Kinvara Pro pricing, I think that the Saucony Fat 🐾 have gone too far on prices in the last 2 years, I will not pay anywhere near £150 for any trainer, I used the Kinvara 12, got them for £90 lasted about 200 miles before bottom out, had loads of niggles with stack height, I felt marketed completely wrong. Saucony Speed 2 around £100, Saucony Pro 3 does not last past 70 miles if you use it hard, treat it like a baby & it is fine, hammer it and the rubber disappears in the forefoot and toe areas very quickly. Speed. 3 lasts around 300-400 miles and again rubber just disappears suddenly.. Looking elsewhere this year

Interesting line up, I just can’t imagine buying a pair of Merrell trainers to run in, while they may have experience in the outdoor market it’s not a brand that catches my attention, interesting that you rate them so much though and that they don’t hold onto water. Interesting that you mention tread depth on XU1/2 as you may recall I suggested they do a ST version of the XU or at least a deeper tread version, my rotation is all saucony now:
    XU1
    XU2
    Peregrine 13 GTX
    Peregrine 12 ST
    Endorphin Speed 2
    Endorphin Pro 3
They’re all great trainers, only comments I’d make about them is the Peregrine 12ST has a very high heel and has blistered my heel so can only use them in shorter runs, they are great in mud but not so great when you tread on something slippery like a wet root or rock! XU2 have been a bit fragile on the overlays where the trainer flexes and the overlays started to come off, XU1 keeps getting more comfortable with more miles, for me there seems to be a break in period over a longer period where they become even more bouncy and comfortable!

I'm pretty sure Saucony don't produce a ST version of the Xodus Ultra? You also highlight why I woukd really want to run in them if they did, I don't think the ST lugs are very consistent when it comes to grip on wet rock! I thought exactly the same about the Merrell shoes having tried them several years ago and been dissapointed but the Agility Peak 5's have impressed me 👍
