Unrequited love, the pain of one-sided love is devastating for anyone. Amazing that Philip did not self-destruct despite being repeatedly humiliated, scorned, rejected and put down. Mildred kind of knew what she wanted and exploited Phil's one-sided love and used him for fixing up her failures. It's perfect karma that in the end she tasted the same bitter medicine (humiliation) she dealt Phil. By the way brilliant performances by both leading roles.

Wow! This is hands down the highest quality version of this movie on UA-cam. All the other ones are smudgy, faded or overexposed. Thank you very much for allowing others to experience this important film in a manner much closer to its original presentation.
Leslie Howard plane went down some where in Spain during WW2 he was never found. The last movie he ever made was Gone with the Wind, then he went home to England to help in the war effort.
I saw that movie as a child on a local TV station that featured a movie in late afternoon and on Saturday nights. That performance of Bette Davis colored my perception of her character for years. I read the novel in college and bought it on DVD many years after college. I remember seeing her on a late night talk show and, I don't know why, I can't shake the feeling that her performance was so true to life because that's what she was really like.
Bette Davis was extraordinary, and a strong simply excellent actress who was more interested in bringing a character to life instead of winning people over, I bet she didn't care what others thought of her. I doubt it highly that Davis was a narcissistic, egotistical user who ever participated the friend of a man she knew loved her, or ever went on a spree of destruction against a man which she was cruel to, as was this character. You malign her memory.
@RosyOutlook2 I don't care what you think. My opinion of her stands. You didn't know her personally. Neither did I, but I was fortunate to live at a time when her behavior on talk shows spoke volumes about her personality. Now run along.
Esta es la primera versión de Servidumbre Humana de Somerset Maugam. Después vinieron otras paro la interpretación de Bette Davis y Leslie Howard es insuperable
I love Bette Davis, no one compares, has ever matched her ability in bring a character to life that one hates and or pities or loves, Davis was the opposite of this character, in the Bad Sister. I think Leslie Howard is always a delight, sad that he died so young. Thank you for sharing this.
@@TheSaltydog07 Mary Tyler Moore said that she only felt alive when acting. I think Bette felt the same, which is why she took on less-than-good quality projects.

Can’t make my mind up about this film … Why does Sally look pregnant in that scene near the end where they’re sitting down , she’s in a white dress , so confused ? I feel so sorry for Norah though …
I do not find anything attractive or endearing about this woman. I’m half way through the movie and it appears Phillip is going to mess up things with Nora. What sane, intelligent man would not want to be with Nora?
I admit I do prefer the later effort with Lawrence Harvey and Kim Novak. However, it was good to be able to compare the two as I had not seen this version before. For the Davis/Howard movie I found the male character to be detestable and needy. Odd but I did not get this impression from reading the book: I had a more sympathetic opinion of him. Maybe because the novel addressed the character in far more depth.
Wrong! Hers is only the second worst. ;-) The worst was Dick Van Dyke's attempt at a cockney accent in 'Mary Poppins'. But unlike Davis, he KNEW it was bad, and spoke about it in interviews. (Davis thought her cockney accent very good, and also spoke about it in interviews, and even reprised it upon an interviewer's request.) The other difference between the two is that Van Dyke was charming in Mary Poppins, and he and Julie Andrews had a delightful kind of chemistry on the screen. No such thing happened between Davis and Howard. She plays a vicious shrew with such overwrought vehemence that one can only wonder how this appalling creature could attract any man - even a psychologically damaged one!
The film that made me fall hard for Bette Davis. I borrowed the vhs tape from Ramstein air base when stationed in the army in the 90s. Read the book, the great Somerset Maugham wrote it as a cathartic experience.
Bless her, Bette couldn't do a _common_ British accent to save her life. EVEN *Lyons* waitresses never spoke like that from the first Lyons & Company who opened their first teashop at 213 Piccadilly in September 1894. Lyons never employed from the gutter up. They employed *only* ladies from domestic service _from good_ households. Leslie Howard was the only English spoken actor in this movie apart from the servant Enora. Bette sounds like Dick Van Dyke. Not remotely English.
17:00 ❓️❓️❓️❓️❓️❓️ very weird "fast pan" right to left, then stops on door abruptly then pans "normally" from doorway to the right? I rewound it 3 times, to rewatch and ensure it wasn't a streaming glitch. I can't remember any similarly harsh camera work from that era, long before (90? years) modern "jump cut movement" became avante-garde then boringly repetitious. 37:42 ~ BwaaaaaHAHAhahah
I wonder why they picked Betty Davis for this part ? Shes not good looking enough for any to go gaga over 😂. Shes good at being evil kinda like her girlfriend Joan Crawford
Bette seemed to have portrayed mostly average women seeking to gain respect so I'm guessing her eyes gave off that commanding presence that a more "beautiful" actress would be less convincing in.

Amazing movie. Bette Davis perfect as always.
Fantastic & devastating Bette Davis movie. Knock your socks off performances.

Un film bellissimo dove lui diventa schiavo di un amore masochista ,entrambi gli attori da Oscar ,da un romanzo di Maugham ❤❤❤❤❤
This is Bette at her best. Lesley Howard is pretty good, too. Read the book.

Bette Davis... never a bad movie!
Her later stuff was not up to her usual standards. Low budget stuff.

Thanks for the cool discoveries. Would love to have "The Case of Poisons" (1955) on this channel.
Bette Davis is amazing as usual. The actress who plays Norah is also very good.

Todo un clasico, excelentes actores
原作サマセット・モーム「人間の絆」(谷崎潤一郎じゃないよ)。ベティ・デビスが最低の悪女に。かなりおもしろい話。

Personajes idóneos.
The very worst cockney accent ever on film delivered by Bette Davis here. Still, it's a decent watch considering it's now 90 years later.

You know, I was going to say Dick Van Dyke! LOL!!! I'm glad somebody did. Cheers!@@karinlawrence6500

I never thought Betty was good looking at all, why pick her for this ....could've gone with Hedy Lamar or someone of great beauty
