Beautiful cars. I recall going to a car show circa 1977, when you saw rows of brass-era/'30's-'40's cars. 1950's cars were very select like the 1957 Bel Air and a few early '60's cars. In the parking lot was a driver 1958 Impala and we just walked past it with a chuckle. Who knew cars like that would be worth a fortune later on. You are so correct Jay when you said a full-time factory worker could support a household. My father was a mechanic, and my mother was a housewife. They had a 3-bedroom high-ranch, 3 kids, a 5 year old or so luxury car, beautiful furniture, went on vacations, etc. if it was now, we'd be living in poverty. What's happened to America is a total disgrace. I had family that suffered and died in WWII to protect that way of life for the common man.

"Let's point these silver streaks toward the ocean and enjoy this beautiful afternoon." It's heartwarming to see the genuine friendship between these guys and that friendship is one big reason why Mansions and Motorcars is such a wonderful success. I hope they make a hundred more episodes!

Jay, first & most importantly I read that you should fully recover from the accident in your garage--I sincerely wish you the best. Second, as a Mercede-Benz owner-driver I esp. enjoyed the 280SE--great choice.

Praying for you Jay. This episode is the best one yet. My favorite was the Pontiac. I haven't had the pleasure of driving or riding in one. If I ever decide to buy a convertible, I would look for a car like this to be driven and enjoyed. Keep it up Jay and Donald. Look forward to many more episodes.

I serviced Buddy Hacketts Rolls when he came to Durham NC for the rice diet. I'll never forget taking the rear leaf springs off and cleaning them, then repacking them with grease and sewing a new leather cover around them. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Get well soon Jay, we miss you.

as a U.S. Army kid in W. Germany, we had sedan versions of this car, a 280S in dark green, and a 280 SEL 3.5 in shiny black, with 3-band radio -- they had a Medium Wave btwn AM and FM
Also non-SAE sealedbeam headlights, in a single vertical column, not (2) round headlights per side
also had a 180A and a 190SL, the 1st cars I remember, after the 1943 Willys MB in my profile pic

I performed 1st 600 mile services on 3.5 convertibles in Greenwich Connecticut dealership. Retorque the cylinder heads, adjust the valves, change rear axle oil, engine oil and filter, grease the chassis, door hinges, rub rubber lube on the door seals, trunk seal. Check idle Co and adjust the electronic fuel injection computer "brain", ignition timing. Greatest years of my 47 year technician career.

Good afternnoon gentlemen . The best of both worlds but Jays comparison is quite correct the Rolls is regal and beautifully engineered but it's generations behind is real terms when compared to what the American motor industry offered . Whoever restored the Rolls gets nil points for securing the rear number plate with philips screws ......tut tut! Thankyou both and it is with relief to see you up and about Jay . However , it's shameful the way you were hounded at that filling station .

Donald, the romantic myth that Henry Ford payed his workers $5/day so that they could afford to buy a new car has been dispelled many times and never mentioned by Ford himself. He did it to stop the 370% worker turnover he was having at the time. The costs of hiring and training that turnover was very high and greatly affected production numbers and profit. See writings by Tim Worstall and Douglas Brinkley and others for complete breakdown of all the practical business reasons that the increase was made.
