I will chill in my mansion in my village. Travel to have a medical check up yearly.

Doc., you have my VOTE. I have been in America since 1980 and have grown up kids here. I agree with your plan COMPLETELY.

I laughed after listening. Individual circumstances differ. Life at old age is not straightforward, especially if you are hail and hearty. I have seen many who migrated to the West in the 80s but couldn't settle in Nigeria. They cruise in,stay in their house, and attend all social functions but still return back. Individual circumstances differ.

Well spoken. You struck the right chord in me. As a Nigerian doctor in diaspora, my mind has been preoccupied with retirement planning back in Nigeria, where to build, size of house, in the village or in the city and execution of the project, what happens to the house when one is gone, especially if your children born abroad are unlikely to decide to live in Nigeria. What happens to that big mansion build in remote village when you pass. You can easily sell a house in Canada, UK, US but the big mansion in the village may not find a buyer and your children, who are all settled in the Europe or America, may not benefit from it. You want to build a simple bungalow but relatives back in Nigeria are pushing you to build a "deserving" mansion for a doctor which I see as ridiculous. They scoff at the idea of a bungalow. What happens when you have serious health challenges that need emergency treatment. You have the means and right passport to fly out abroad for treatment but you may not still be alive before you get to the airport. I see many people die of peventable causes in Nigeria. The thoughts can be daunting and challenging. These are not criticism but just food for thoughts that have preoccupied my mind. Feel free to share your thoughts and wisdom.

There are lots of good hospitals in Nigeria in Lagos and Abuja and some other places. Those who have problem with home are those sho have stayed away for ages.

I rather chill in Abuja. Nigerian Wife may likely not follow you, as a man you must also have a plan to survive, have cheffs that will supply your food weekly. Our wives will prefer to stay back and raise their grand children.

your wife and your children They also don't have your time abroad so If you put things in place in Nigeria, it is possible to live like a king in Nigeria than living abroad You can always go for medical check up or medical treatments abroad, I have lived 22 years in Germany I do not intend to end up In a retirement home

I have lived and worked for more than two decades in Europe and i pray to retire with my spouse to peaceful,SECURE and stable African country asap....Nigeria is no longer an Option for me , too much insecurity ( my choice). Everyone should decide for him/herself.

You make solid sense my brother. Old age in the Western world is scary and depressing. However Nigeria is terribly uninviting today than 20 years ago when I left it. No security, no medical care, no smooth business transactions- you basically have to bribe your way through ordinary things, starting at the airport. Our public service systems are totally dysfunctional. But a house in Nigeria is a bright idea any day.

Just pray you don't have health challenges that demands the presence of your children or wife in your old age..You may have all it takes to be treated right but once your wife and kids are not coming with you, you will regret coming back as nobody will take care of you as your wife and children would...Them go chop your money and treat you like shit Bro..If you retire and remain abroad, at least one of your children will take you in and care for you which is priceless..You don't need to be in any other home care..

If someone had a net worth of at least $10M, will your advice be the same?
A lot of Nigerian and other African in the diaspora households make multi-6 figure incomes now. The focus should be on saving and investing early to allow time for their investments to grow.
