- My friend, Jo, has been collecting and studying quilts for many years. In this episode we go through the quilts that have been passed down in my family as well as vintage quilts I have purchased over the years. Wonderful quilts in general, but that crazy quilt is phenomenal. To find them in that good of condition is rare!!

I thank both of you lovely and knowledgeable ladies for the gift of the content of this podcast. I learned so much and am so grateful to have the knowledge. I am lucky to have 5 quilts handsewn by my great grandmother. And, I am storing them in a blanket chest built by my great grandfather. I have been folding the quilts and now will change to rolling them. During the winter months, I take a few of them out and display them on a blanket stand I have. One of them is small enough that I use it on a small doll bed I have that my grandfather made. I have never washed any of them for all the reasons you outlined. I am also careful that if we use them for warmth, I place a layer or two between us and the quilts to help keep human skin, hair and oils from coming in contact with them. Also, I want to compliment Paula on the beautiful sweater you are wearing. The pattern and the colors you choose are quite attractive. I love Jo's lavender vest and the complementary shawl she is wearing. The video of the changing leaves was enjoyable as well. While we have experienced a few cooler days here in Virginia Beach, Va, so far this fall, our leaves have not changed colors yet as we had a lengthy Indian summer throughout October this year. Again, thank you so much for sharing this content with us!

Jo, your knowledge is amazing and I really appreciated all the bits of information to try and remember the next time I look at an antique quilt. Paula, I am impressed by your family heritage of quilts and glad that you have "saved" a few others over the years - how sad that needlework is so undervalued in terms of $ - who knows what might have happened to them without you.

Oh boy... I wish I collected quilts. I rarely see them here in Brisbane, I think because it's so hot here. I would love to visit the quilt museum that is your house 🙂

Very interesting as a few years ago Molly's Mom saw one of my quilts and said it was quite old. Last year she returned with the book, Dating Fabrics and was able to date the quilt by the fabrics. Enjoyed the video.
That's fantastic that you have family quilts. too. I was surprised that some of mine were older than I had estimated.

Hi Paula and Jo. Thanks for a fascinating podcast! This was so interesting. I learned a lot. All of the quilts are beautiful, but that stunning crazy quilt really caught my eye because I've always loved those. I also started a Dresden Plate quilt back when I was in college. Only made about four squares, which I still have them somewhere. This made me want to dig them out.
I think you should start with a fresh, new, and easy quilt pattern and then go back to your old squares. Great hearing from you, Fran.

I have a quilt top that my great Gramma made...it hasn't aged well so I have undertaken repair it myself....it's prolly Abt 110 years old...its value money wise prolly isn't much, but it's super interesting to learn about my great Gramma that passed 15 years before I was born
Good for you for preserving the quilt. Sad to sat but you are right that it probably isn't worth much, but it is worth a lot to you and that is what matters. I've bought a few old quilts recently at an antique mall in our town and I can't believe how little they are valued. Thanks for sharing, Lori.

Wow that is an AMAZING episode, wow !the quilt are amazing, thank you soooooo much for sharing all the family quilt and thank you for all that information, especially how to care for quilt, i have a question please for new quilt, when do you wash the quilt, do you wash it when you completely finush the quilt or brfore you assemble the 3 layers? Hi Sheatha. We wash a new quilt after it is completely assembled, quilted, and bound.
I would not use Oxiclean, that is too harsh. Soak a dirty quilt in a bathtub with some Palmolive or Dawn, MUCH less harsh but truly cleans the dirt. Let is soak, drain the water, let is soak, drain the water until the water runs clear or reasonably clean. Carry it to a sunny yard, using a towel...meaning, put wet quilt on the towel bundle it up and lay it in the yard to dry, on a sheet on just on the grass. If you want it to be soft then wait until it's ALMOST dry and put it in the dryer on delicate for the last bit of drying. Oxiclean no!
Take pictures of what you want on your label and it will print so you can read it properly for your labels ... I bet your grand kids could help you with it and also encourage their interest in the project.
