10-Stop ND Filter Group Test: 16 different filters reviewed and compared

  • This video has been a real labour of love for me - I really hope you enjoy it / find it useful. I decided to test 10-stop filters as they are strong enough to have a good chance of giving you an idea of how other filters by the manufacturer might perform.
    02:54 - Pig Iron Pro ND1000
    03:51 - Neewer Slim ND1000
    04:25 - K&F Concept 18-Layer ND1000

    09:41 - Irix Edge ND1000

15:09 - Polar Pro Cinema Series Quartzline ND1000
16:32 - Polaroid HD ND2-2000 Variable ND Filter
    17:42 - Conclusions
    As mentioned before, each filter was a 67mm diameter ND1000 (10-Stop / ND3.0) model.
The colour tests and flaring tests were performed with a Sony a7R II camera in full-frame mode, in carefully controlled environments with pre-set white balance settings, to ensure fairness and consistency.
The sharpness test is taken from the center of the image frame of a picture taken on a 24-megapixel APS-C camera (Sony a5100) to put maximum pressure on the filter (the lens was set to f/4.5 for maximum sharpness). Each filter was cleaned meticulously and dusted before any test took place.

Nice thorough review Crhis! I was amazed by the fact that very high end filter presented results similar to way cheaper filter. This kind of review helps a lot new photographers to choose the better gear, not the most popular or expensive.

Thanks for your hard work on this review! A little over a year ago I replaced all of my B+W filters with Breakthrough X4 3, 6, 10 stop ND as well as CP filters (77mm and 82mm). I’m just an amateur but the difference is amazing. Was wondering if other manufacturers were catching up, now I know.

Aw, great job dude. That must've been time consuming! Great shootout, what a great resource for the community.
I went from cheapo Fotga filters to Zomei ones to Rollei and now Breakthrough Photography. As it's with a lot of equipment... you sorta pay for what you get. Don't cheapskate, but it's also not necessary to buy the most expensive stuff out there either. There's good value in between somewhere.

There are a lot of ND reviews on UA-cam, but this one sets the bar. High. Would love to see you review 6 stop filters, and a range of variables, despite your general distaste for them, VNDs are wildly popular for videography, where conditions can change so fast, and time is so tight, that the image differences are often outweighed by practical concerns.

I own breakthrough technology X4 filters. I once dropped one in wet sand on the beach. I picked it up, and the glass surface was perfectly clean. The metal was covered in wet sand. They have a coating on the lens that repels water, I cannot believe how well it works. It is incredible technology.

Thanks for yet another excellent review. Other opinions I've seen (as well as my own early cheapo experiences) support your general finding that you do indeed get what you pay for where ND (and ND grad) filters are concerned, though some makes are hideously expensive, giving the middlingly priced ones the edge where cost-benefit is concerned IMHO. I use a combination of 100x100 mm and 100x150 mm NiSi (filter holder and filters) and Formatt-Hitech (filters), neither of which are particularly cheap (especially NiSi) but produce good results without any noticeable colour cast.

Wow, thanks! Would be great if you could do a variable ND comparison some day too. Some important ones to compare: SLR Magic MkII, Aurora Aperture XND MkII, Heliopan, B&W, Tiffen, GenusTech, Singh-Ray and others. The first two of the ones I mentioned, haven't been tested out that much yet since they're more recent. From some research it seems like they might outshine some of the previously held to be best Vari's.

Thank you Chris! :) This video was very helpful, I own various GOBE filters and I'm quite satisfied with them: I have the CPL, the ND1000 (both 2 Peak design) and an inexpensive ND2 (one peak design). I never bothered buying the 3 Peak because the quality of the 2 Peak was good enough for my lenses.I also ordered a Hoya HMC UV(c) filter and it was a pain to use: a bit less sharpness, seemed accurate with the colors but it was a pain to clean. I was using it to protect my 17-40 from the water in Iceland and it was really hard to keep it clean, so I'm returning it (thanks Amazon). Anyway, I'm now interested in a much darker filter, maybe an ND16, and I'll take a look at the IRIX filters, which seemed to me the best as far as quality/price.

  • @bodkinsbestphotography
    @bodkinsbestphotography 5 років тому

I tired Amazon basics when I was first starting out. Only took a day to realize it was a mistake. I next grabbed a 77mm Hoya ND1000. I'm fairly happy with it, but having limited experience with other brands I didn't realize others were that much easier to clean. Hoya definitely has a big problem with smearing.
Think I'll consider grabbing a Irix or Breakthrough next time.
