Porsche IMS Fix 13: Exhaust Bolts, Supports, Plate, Axle Nuts and First Start

- In the final installment of the Intermediate Shaft Bearing project! I replace the exhaust bolts with stainless steel, reinstall the reinforcement plate, and torque some bolts without using a torque wrench. Finally, I go through the process of starting the car for the first time!

Liked the use of physics to calculate the distance on your wrench for the axle nut.

Thanks for the IMS videos! I certainly appreciate all the extra hours you spent to put them together. It defiantly made this job go easier and a must for anyone who wants to DIY. The worst part of the experience was getting the exhaust apart and out. I bet I spent half my time on that alone. Next time I do this, I'll remove the bumper for some extra room. I've got a couple thousand km on the car and its running great. Thanks again!

Great job. I've watched the whole series in a row. I've looked at a 996 from 1999 at a ridiculous price and low milage. A lot of people are scared of that ims problem and it's the right time to buy one I think. You sure took away my worries. keep up that optimism. It's a lesson to many. Your german is funny. I'm german and I couldn't make out the meaning.

great job, I assume you put the engine oil in... and did you change the transmission gear lube while it was out ?? I kind of assume you did. very very helpful... thats a bigger job than I have ever done myself, so hope you feel great about it. what was the total time and parts bill ?? I assume this project was over a month to six weeks ???

Just take off the whole exhaust from the headers all as one piece. Makes it much much easier.

Regarding the aluminum plate, it looks like the only thing separating the left and right sections is the sway bar. Wouldn't it be easier just to loosen the sway bar to fit the plate on?
Good thought, but the left and right supports hold the sway bar in place not the other way around. Loosening the sway bar doesn't affect the position of the supports.

hi burner, I watched most of your DIY videos even I don't have a Porsche yet :). they are great stuffs. I am thinking of buying a 996, do you know if all 996.2 3.6L use the single row IMSB? if so, should I look for the 3.4L only?
hello, sir! Sorry for the late reply. I just moved, and this got a bit lost... To answer your question, yes, I believe all the 996.2 will have a single row IMSB. I don't think this is a reason to look for an early 3.4. You can swap out the single row IMSB, you'll just have to be a little more careful (opt for a stronger replacement or replace it more frequently).
Working on the same IMS project. May I ask why you removed the half shafts? I just unbolted the from the trans
Ah, yes, both boots were broken. I removed them to replace the boots and recondition the CV joint. It's a totally unnecessary step if the boots are in good condition.
Burner's Cars makes perfect sense to do that then. I can't wait to get my boxster project finished. Replaced cv boots on my 996 turbo, it was a painful learning experience.
Did you get an alignment after you finished? Was it out?
I meant to... still mean to, but I never did do the alignment. It seems it's fine.
His way of torquing the nut results in absolutely the wrong torque being applied. There is no way to isolate his weight from his movement. He was bouncing up and down and his hands were not free. A better way would be to use a really long distance and just use something with a known weight to hang on it. I used 45lb gym weight and a long bar at around 8 feet. I can’t remember the exact distance.
