Martin Scorsese first encountered the films of Powell and Pressburger when he was a child, sitting in front of the family TV. When their famous logo came up on screen, Scorsese says, "You knew you were in for fantasy, wonder, magic - real film magic."
Now, in this documentary, he tells the story of his lifelong love-affair with their movies, including The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp, and The Tales of Hoffmann.
"Certain films you simply run all the time and you live with them," Scorsese says. "As you grow older they grow deeper. I’m not sure how it happens, but it does. For me, that body of work is a wondrous presence, a constant source of energy, and a reminder of what life and art are all about."
Drawing on a rich array of archive material, Scorsese explores in full the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger - two romantics and idealists, who thrived in the face of adversity during World War II but were eventually brought low by the film industry of the 1950s.
Scorsese celebrates their ability to create "subversive commercial movies" and describes how deeply their films have influenced his own work.

It seems like we have been waiting since forever for this to arrive; I hope it plays in enough cinemas that filmlovers get a proper chance to see it on a big screen.
Unfortunately, it won't. The majority of people who go to the cinema today have no clue who Powell and Pressburger are or how magnificent their contribution to cinema is. Most of us who love P&P will probably have to wait to see this on Blu-ray at home. I was lucky enough to visit the BFI last year during the P&P season there and catch some of the screenings of their films.
Like most that watched this trailer, I am a certified film buff. I dearly would love to see this doc on a big screen. Problem is, I don't live in one of the major film centers of the US, but live close to Kansas City. KC does not get a lot of movies that have such a limited release. Please come to KC with this movie. Maybe a Fathom Events or something like that. I know it won't hit this side of the pond until next month, but here's to hoping. If not, please release this for us physical media hoarders. We love our Blu Rays!!!!
I hope I get to see this in theaters. Even so I’ll gladly watch it on MUBI when it premieres for streaming.
Fingers crossed for a US release! Powell and Pressburger are my all-time favorites, and this looks like such a lovingly crafted celebration of their work
Wow, I cannot wait to see this. Everyone has their favorite, mine is Black Narcissus, that film transfixes me every time, simply astonishing.
