Brutal, when my girlfriend moved in with me she needed a new car. I bought a 2002 Infiniti i35 sight unseen off of a car forum for $1200 because it was a Texas only car owned by a recently deceased grandmother. The woman's son inherited the car and wanted to get rid of it because of "electrical issues". I could tell it was just a bad alternator and knew that the i35 was just a re-badged maxima so I bought it bc my girl needed a car and I was broke. This was the height of the used car bubble so there was no better option. Because I skipped a pre-purchase inspection I wound up taking out a loan to put roughly $7500 of work into the car to replace the entire suspension and a laundry list of other small things, including a backup camera and head unit so she wouldn't feel so bad about driving such an old dumpy car.
Long story long, that 'girlfriend' is my wife now and in retrospect she's tough as nails for driving such a POS. We got her a newer Outback but I still own the i35 because I kind of fell in love with the thing. Engine burns/leaks no fluid and it runs like a clock now at 100k miles. I got extremely lucky though, I could have just as easily dug myself into a hole for nothing.

Beats me why anyone would buy a car withouth a pre-purchase inspection. A couple of hundred dollars is cheap for the peace of mind it gives you. And if you end up not buying, then you've avoided losing thousands instead.

Can tell it was in an accident by the bumper gap on the side. They're basically flush when fresh from the factory.

Yes, certainly some disappointment for the buyer, yet it does present well & IF the buyer keeps it in a garage, the appearance should hold up for a while. Though as you point out, Caveat Emptor.

I'll stick with my 18 yr old 2006 Nissan Altima. Its been a terrific car and if anything happens to it I fear the nightmare of looking for a used car to replace it. (I would never buy a new car these days)

No tint laws? Doesn't Oregon have a 35% light passage law? 4:05
Also, that stock muffler not exiting out the back of the aftermarket bumper is dangerous and can feed Carbon Monoxide to the passenger compartment. Looks like the stock tip was cut shorter.

Nonsense. Plenty of cars have exhaust that terminates under the car like that.
As a matter of fact, most ALL cars had exhaust pipes like that until the whole “show off exhaust pipes sticking out the back” craze started.

I'm going to look at a 2010 VW Touareg with about 100,000 miles on it on Tuesday and I think those things can be real trouble. Expensive trouble. I saw a vid of a guy changing the transmission oil and it was literally too much for me to do because I don't have a lift. I'm also 70 years old. But the VW is only $7,000! That's extremely cheap. Cheaper than a 2010 Land Rover or Jeep or BMW or Mercedes SUV of comparabe vintage. So it's kind of a lottery. If a simple thing breaks, it's probably a minimum of $1000 to pay someone to fix it. But the V6 gas engine has good marks for reliability. But what the hell do I want a luxury 4wd SUV for? I'm driving a '97 Saturn SL1 right now. Maybe I'll be seduced by how well it drives. But I should probably get a used electric car and say goodbye to oil changes, sparkplugs, clutches, EGR and variable valve timing etc. forever. 🤑

With the cheap mods i would bet a younger person owned it so chances are it has been driven hard .

  • @brianandrews7099

Seems like it was (and maybe still is) a “kid’s car” (teen or early 20something) with all the “mods”. I see cars like this all the time (usually with an extremely loud exhaust system) and I find it funny because all the cheap add ons and tints don’t change the fact that you’re still driving a slow, cheap, basic commuter car. Your not fooling anybody. Maybe it’s an unfair assessment but I associate cars like this with owners that slam them around and abuse them. The kind of owner that would rather invest in additional cheap eBay or Amazon “do-dad” enhancements than on oil changes and required maintenance and service. So, I would run … not walk … away from buying a used car like this one.
