Cool advice and very pleasant explanation, ty
Dan, the tone of this bass in this recording is why I play bass. It’s delicious. It’s the best word I can use to describe it. And the syncopated line is like the cherry on top.
I’m the same, Michelle! Can’t get enough groovy bass tone…
so I saw Stever Hackett last night and it was an incredible concert.
The bass player got to do a 10-12 min solo and then a bit more with just him and the drummer.
I commented on this post earlier but y t didn't like me saying I would try to put it on for you, kek.
Good day Dan I have to say this is the kind of thing I hear in my head when I listen to some songs learning to try and get my fingers to do what I hear in my head. Thank you for this soundtrack I think it’ll help me get to that point, major minor scales, Pentatonix and chords that’s the stuff I love thank you Greg. 😊
You got a new ray!! Sweet, congrats!
It’s been my main bass for 20 years!
Very nice lesson again. Great for practicing the groove and fills.
Beautiful StingRay! Thanks for the lesson. I have my fretboard, scales, arpeggios memorized and can read music. I just wanna learn more fluency and improv. I love listening to the kick drum on songs. Helps with the rhythm so much!
Funny how everyone learns differently. I started off improvising. Didn’t know any theory or fretboard knowledge . Goes to show doesn’t matter how you get to the destination l, just make sure you get there.
@@soulstart89 I have a guitarist friend who started off the same as you. I do believe if you have an ear for music, that can really get you quiet far. I’m more the I wanna learn how and why everything works together type.
Thanks for yet another inspirational video Dan!
Thanks very much, Mike!
Excellent lesson
another brilliant lesson. so helpful. thanks Dan.
Excellent Dan.
❤. True. ❤
Nice bass🙏🏽👍🏽🎸🔥
Thanks 💯
Loved that… you are helping me so much Dan.
Glad to hear that. Thanks for watching!
Dan
Your lessons are so practical and useable. I devour them. Would it be possible for you to go through the multitracks of some of your sessions and talk us through how you arrived at the final bass part?
Thank you.
Thanks! That’s a very good idea. I’ll have to find something suitable…
A bit of Daft punk coming through there.👍👍
The Lee Sklaar bit that Dan refers to is at 3:40 of this video (about 10 seconds after where the link picks it up): ua-cam.com/video/nIRBZ-PO2Os/v-deo.htmlsi=xIvt13eRXfHT5e6Q&t=210
Just checked it out. Lee is one cool cat! 😎
❤
QQ: I see your signal goes to the Avallon and then to the Appollo. Ithought the Appollo preamps are very good, do you still prefer the Avallon?
They are very good. It’s just habit I guess! And I like the tone plus it’s a setup I’ve used for a long time so I tend to stick with these things with some other options to hand.
Dear Dan,
it's almost uncanny. Next week, I'll be meeting my bass teacher again, and this time we'll be working on playing with a jam track. You've already provided a practice track in advance - thank you so much. By the way, I have the impression that I'm learning more from you than from my teacher. You're simply fantastic.😊
By the way, what I really want to learn and internalize is playing "outside" effortlessly. As a big fan of "King Crimson" and "Porcupine Tree," I really enjoy it when the music surprises me, preferably in a somewhat 'bitter' way. Do you perhaps have a listening recommendation where the bass alone plays unpredictably? I hope I described this correctly?😔
Warm regards,
Ralf
Thanks Ralf! I think if you listen to any progressive rock or jazz fusion band you’ll find bass players playing differently to what you might normally hear. Try Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Victor Wooten and bands and artists like that!
@@OnlineBassCourses Dear Dan,
unfortunately, I find it difficult to explain, as I probably haven't fully grasped it myself. 🙄
A good example I find is 'Significant Other'. In the 'calm' part of the song, Mr. Levin plays a fantastic supporting bass, and when the musicians intensify everything around minute 3, the bass initially follows suit and then takes another step forward - but how does Toni manage to go even further? I can hear that something changes, but sadly, I can't discern what it is.🤔
Listening and understanding what's going on is not so easy, darn it. 🥺
Best regards,
Ralf
@@ralf5489 I love that song. He does it through rhythms, technique (digging in a bit more), and playing around with note choices. Once you learn the notes you can play over chords plus practice hearing the techniques and specific changes in the bass line you can really learn loads. Especially from Tony Levin! Maybe I'll do a lesson on Significant Other...
@@OnlineBassCoursesOh yes, a 'Significant Other' lesson would be awesome! 🥳
Thanks alot 🙏
By the way the section about 'Modal Interchange' in your Lesson* - so cool. I will pick it up for my next 1 to 1 bass lesson with my teacher. 😁

Hi Dan I would like for you to listen to a song it’s called . About Damn Time by Lizzio and scott’s bass did a breakdown on this song tell me your thoughts after you hear it, this is the kind of thing I hear when I listen to music Greg.
Very good bass line. Sit down and work it out and learn from it! I did that for hundreds of bass lines I liked. You learn a lot that way.
Will do. Thank you for your advice.😊
I use a five string bass.. Please do more tutorials using the five string..thanks
Have a search on my channel - I have a few up. 🙏
Sorry Dan, the buzz off your bass is so distracting I cannot focus on your lesson and I usually do enjoy your lessons.
too bad, it's a valuable lesson
do some relaxing and get back to it, bro!
@@denisblack9897 😂my thought exactly, sounds killer my end 👌🏽
It is a bit buzzy but can’t you just ignore it?? 😂
Dan I bought your book and I can assure you this guy can’t read it bc he’s to distracted by his frets buzzing
Superb lesson Dan , love that track inside out, 🔥🔥👌🏽
