Loved this Julia. I know the GH series is video-centric, but ive got some of my all time favourite images from the GH5 and GH6. So under rated for photos too, and the GH7 has taken that to the next level!
Great to find a channel with the easy-to-listen-to Australian accent. Subscribed not just for the clear voice-over but for the quality coverage of this new-release camera.
That was a superb review! One of the best I've seen actually, the tracking AF seems to be working really well! Loved my G9 and my S1R before I switched systems but might go back in the future. Great job 🙂
I have GH6 and I like it very much; however, the GH7 is on my wish list. The only feature that I really want is the new auto focus. I get around this by using the focus limiter.
it's cool that you are also testing a mft camera, and for portraits too! I like this camera even if I have never tried mft because of all the features it has, and by the way colors look great too....
Great video - as always... Thank you for all that you do. --QUESTION-- How can I let LUMIX know that removing the "Multiple Exposure" feature from the S5 series and the New Micro 4/3 bodies, was a very bad idea. Where is the best place to submit feedback directly to LUMIX?
Nice work Julia. What did Dan think of the video capabilities? Pity you found the f1.2 a bit soft. Looks ok for portraits though? Do you find the MFT quality difference to be noticeable or an issue in real world shooting (aside from for example lens softness)? That is, not having the full frame look? Some describe MFT as slightly more processed or digital looking. I don’t find it a problem myself (I have a G9 and also a Canon 5DIII for FF duties). I imagine the greater is an issue DOF? I find the colours and general rendering from the G9II and GH7 very appealing.
*Looks like an exceptional MFT format solution, minus the shortcomings of the GH6. I wish you had included more 5.7K and 5.8K open gate footage to better evaluate how this camera does at the maximum possible resolution. The little you did show looks really great.*
What about GH7 with a proper gimbal stabilizer? Have you tried a full stabilizer setup with a midrange zoom lens, an attached monitor, external mic? What gimbal brand can handle the GH7 best?
Compare with Sony, which of them do you recommend? How many lens there are for lumix compare with Sony? The quality of colors , speed of focus , OIS and...?
Yeah - I have the Nocticron and it's one of the sharpest lenses ever made with astounding performance at F1.2. I use m4/3 cameras just to use this lens. Must be a bad copy or focusing/shutterspeed issue.
Great 📸😍🎉!!!... Now we only need some fast AF lenses, that can have an equivalent aperture of the basic f/1.8 lens in fullframe. Like some 12/17/25/42/55mm f/0.85 AF primes lenses. With that, I think there will be no excuse to leave the m43 system and just grab the excelente GH7 camera
I've got to honestly say: assuming professionals, despite maybe not being the biggest need for portrait spec, but still: how come no one seems to provide actual photo buffer tests for the GH7? Was there a "brief" to avoid mentioning that kind of issues? :) it might be a great hybrid camera. however G9ii suffers from low buffer-write speeds. i.e. your mirrorless burst shooting speeds become meaningless when the buffer takes up to a minute to fully clear... afaik GH7 might have CF express type B, unlike the G9ii? Is that issue improved or possibly mostly resolved? For wildlife and sports it would make it a better stills cam than the actual photocentric G9ii. Now THAT would be an amazing, novel and afaik quite unique "info" and test. Literally costing 1 minute to verify.
I've had the G9II for a while now and it has not been an issue irl. You're only going to hit the buffer if you're shooting 60fps bursts for more than 3 seconds. Even in 60fps, once you know when you're going to hit the buffer, you can just shoot in shorter burst and it's not going to be a problem.
@@IsawUupThere It is a problem. It might not be the most common as it will mainly occur for action, sports, wildlife and birds. But the buffer WILL fill up in more demanding photography demands and situations. And once it does - that 1 minute buffer clear speed on the G9ii IS a problem. As you'll be like a literal sitting duck. With locked down shooting or drastically reduced fps. The question was and still is, and oddly is nowhere mentioned: How fast does the GH7 clear it's 200 shot raw/max 20fps buffer once it's filled at 200 images and it's 8GB buffer ram with ONLY the cf express type b card inserted and written to. Only cf slot because there are indications that having both cf and sd inserted and/or written to can also slow down write speeds. -> How fast or slow does the GH7 clear it's 20fps, 200 shot raw/max image buffer compared to the G9ii via it's cf express type b slot (only). Is it also up to 55+ seconds? Faster? Way faster? As that would potentially resolve one of G9ii's biggest flaws for specific kinds of photography and practical/demanding 20fps photo shooting.
@@justXcallXitXtechno What you're saying does not reflect my experience with the camera at all. You should simply try it in a store and see for yourself.
I also have the G92 and I do find that the buffer does interrupt things like entering playback or restarting recording when you stop it. This is from a video perspective, not from a photography filling up the buffer perspective.
@@TheFlyFishingFilmmaker That's true. CF-express would have been nice to have, but I guess they're trying to differentiate it from the GH7. I always have an SSD on me, in case I want to shoot 60fps pre-burst or I'm switching a lot between video and photo - the buffer clears noticeably faster to SSD. Most of the time it's not an issue for me though.
In terms of filming, I find it odd that we cheer those who use an iphone for videos and movies, then jump up to full frame as a quality option, but frown on apsc or micro four thirds. But the quality is absolutely there! I admit I prefer super 35 sizes and full frame, but it's worth looking into getting a GH7 for videos and photos.
Hi Julia, massive fan, love your videos. Could you please tell me if you're going to review the new Sigma 28-45 F1.8 DG DN ART lens for portraits? Do you offer any in-person or zoom private photography lessons? Cheers, Scott
I don’t know what firmware was on these preproduction cameras that was sent out for UA-camrs to test and review because when I finally got my GH7 from B&H the autofocus is horrible and to make sure I wasn’t doing the wrong thing or had the wrong settings I had a video chat with B&H camera specialist and they was having the same result with their camera using the same lens Leica 12-60 so they are contacting Panasonic to see what is going on.
can someone please clarify what 50fps 4:3 Open Gate modes this camera supports? Proxies at the least? any improvements over the Gh6? or is it just 4.4k with a significant crop?
5.8K open gate up to 30p while 4.4K open gate is up to 60p. There's tons of file type/resolution/frame rate options, the official spec sheet on the Lumix website has it all listed. The biggest improvements over the GH6 are autofocus, frame rate/res options, internal ProRes, 32BIT audio. Hope that helps!
Where did you grow up that you say 'h' as 'haitch?' When you say GH7 it sounds to my ear much harder to say as G haitch 7 than G aitch 7 which flows a lot easier. I appreciate your more photo-centric aspects of the review. Most reviewers tend to almost exclusively use and review the camera in video, but plenty of us use GH cameras as hybrids, and the stills are important to us.
@@michaelbell75 You are kidding right? In every English speaking country I have been in it is not common. It is generally associated with working class people in the UK. It's a great camera but the sensor size is the limitation. Just wish it was atleast APSC, because it would pair so well with those APSC Sigma/Viltrox/Sirui primes. I shot with M43 for awhile and the bokeh was simply harder to achieve in the equivalent focal lengths simply due to the crop factor. Amongst other differences but that was the main factor I noticed. Also awesome to see Clovelly.

They are two completely different tools for different situations.
Would i be NUTS to buy this instead of a SONY A7IV ?
No. It's a better camera than the a7IV, especially for video. It's also less expensive with cheaper lenses.
You can store videos and photos on separate sd cards on the s5ii
Yes! You can choose which card records JPEGs, RAWs and Video independently.
what do you mean there is no Auto focus if you use Atomos box?
