    There's a reason why Bonzo never recorded with the Vistalites. The warmth of the wood is just so amazing. Live is a different story. The pop coming off of the Vistalites was an easy choice when trying to cut through Page, Jones, the PA, etc... Both sound amazing!

    • @DeanMk1
      @DeanMk1 2 роки тому +2

      That's the first thing I picked up when they started playing the Mahogany drums; darker and warmer than the Vistalites.
      Both drums sound great, though.

      You sir are 100 percent....CORRECT! I owned many vistalite kits over my lifetime. In my younger days in the early 80s I played in a Zep tribute when digging up amber in those sizes was damn near impossible, but I had em. But live yes, the vistalites could cut through ANYTHING and had a projection that was all their own. I continued to play them into my original bands but changed over to pinstripes in order to warm them up enough to both record with and play live with. It worked out excellently.

      Oddly enough, when Paiste decided to enter the US market in the 1960's, they setup a temporary partnership with Ludwig and used their chain of dealerships to get a foot hold in that market. Once they got themselves setup, they ended the partnership and have been here ever since.
      Years later, GMS drums did a similar move by partnering with Paiste and using their dealership network to establish themselves nationwide.

    VISTA’S all day!!! We drummers all probably have several different kits, in several different sizes, in several different woods, for several different eras of our lives…BUT, how many of us have a set of Bonham Sized, Bonham Influenced Vista’s in either vintage, or reproduced original Luddy’s?!? So, once again, I cry VISTA’S ALL DAY!!!
    Also on the video…thanks for being honest about the Speed King Pedal. And I’d like to add…Is it only me or does anybody else, when they sit behind a 26,14,16,18 One up, Two down configuration, automatically play the Hell out of triplet beats?! Hahaha

  • @pawelmorrison
    @pawelmorrison 3 роки тому +6

    Regarding your comment on having to fight the speed king - I`ve noticed you bury the beater. The double compression spring featured in that pedal promotes pulling the beater off the head. I play this way and I find that this pedal really makes my job easier, compared to something focused on a heavy forward action liek a DW or something. That's probably why you didn't find it very suiting for your play style.
    Great video as always guys, have a great new year!

    Bonham's most favorite sounding drum kit was his green sparkle maple kit. He used the green sparkle maple kit on tour from 1970-1972 AND for all studio recordings from 1970-1980. He also loved/preferred Remo Emperor coated heads that he used on this kit.

    I wish I would just once in my life need a kit like this with gigantic shells like these. I saw Jason Bonham tonight for the third time and that 26” acrylic kick knocked my soul out of my body a few times. Just once, I wish I could play a set of drums like this. At 47, my 10-12-14-20 set is easy and lightweight but I love the thunder of big drums like these.

  • @meekoloco

    Both kits sound just crazy great. When I see these sizes though, I want that Vista sound and I want to hear them tuned up like Bonzo liked them. I’m totally biased! When I hear a 26 tuned up high it just has a thing in the mids my ears love. Shane, you played a couple new licks I hadn’t heard from you before! Bravo! And Barrett, man, you play really well and the standout thing for me is your youthful exuberance for the drums! I love it! Hang onto that my man!

    I purchased a used amber set of V-lites from Belisle's in Manchester in the late 80's. 13, 14, 16, 18, 24 with a 5" amber snare. They were big sounding especially when I put Black Pinstripes on the toms. It still had the original Ludwig single ply reso heads. I eventually made some deals and ended up with a blue set which I still have. The snare is my main snare to this day. i was given an incomplete 10x14 Ludwig marching snare from the 20' or 30's. I updated the hardware and have used that also. I call it my big 10 inch. There are old videos of both sets on my personal channel.

    The Speed King is an excellent pedal if you dial it in correctly which CAN be a bit of a chore but once you have your own sweet spot picked out its amazing. I played in bare feet for many years because I liked to feel the kit on a tactile level and I loved feeling that under my foot and I could even grab its edges with my toes and really have some fun with it.

      I've been using the Tama Iron Cobra rolling glide double pedal for about 24 years. Love it. Just bought a Tama Speed Cobra 910 double pedal. Wow, for being smooth, fast, and punchy. Here's the kicker though, I started playing drums when I was 9. My 1st pedal was a Ludwig Speed King. I learned the heel toe on that pedal for fast doubles. If not for that speed king, I don't think I would be as fast as I am today. It really helped me with strength and control. Now I do it on my Speed Cobra more efficiently and less effort!

    I have played Ludwig exclusively since probably '84. I got a 1973 black 3-ply kit with '70s Zildjian's when I was 13 when my school dropped the band funding. All the instruments just got given away or sold. Used it for a few years and got the new 6ply classics for the increased volume in unmiked settings. Finally got my dream set in clear maple 3-ply from 72 or 73. Sizes are14x26, 10x14, 12×15, 16x16, 18×16, 20×18. 6.5x14 Supraphonic, 5x14 Tequila sunrise vistalite, and many 1970's 2002 all black label cymbals. 14"/15" SE 2002 hats, 20"/24" ride, 16"(3), 18"(3)20"(6)22"(1) crashes. I love the round full tone of the 3ply drums. The cymbals all sound like fine lead crystal glass shattering. I love Ludwig 3ply and Paiste cymbals.
    Your comment on the speed king pedals had me rolling in pain, I laughed SO HARD. I agree, the speedking is hands down the worst pedal I ever used. I use Yamaha Flying Dragon double direct drive and Tama double Iron Cobra chain drives. The Flying Dragons are such an awesome feeling direct drive pedal.....completely opposite the Speedking.

    Awesome!! Both drum kits , express each one their signature sound with accuracy, and demand to the drummer, the energy that the kits themselves expect from player. By the way, the store staff did perform in the manner mentioned above. Play hard, take away all the sound potential from every kit, having fun and the pleasure to sit behind this historic and powerful set up. My fav one..... for shake the audence bones, the Vista. The supraphonic 6/5" x 14", was made for to be performed in this configuration, as well. God Bless Ludwig, an american percussion jewl. I`m a Premier drum kit player, but, there`s no way to ignore the Ludwig product, killer in any way.

    Loved my 26" Ludwig bass drum for jamming with loud guitarist and bassists. Great live. Too bad I was ripped off. Still really miss thaat kit. Only drawback was when recording them. When recording I'm back to a 22". I just bought a 26" vista. Still saving up for the rest of the kit. Want it for playing live. Cymbals are a toss cup between Paiste and Istanbul. Play and love them both. Lost two Istanbul crashes and a ride in the theft. I hate thieves. I heard that thieves get fingers or hands lopped off when caught stealing. Kind of makes it hard to play when you don't have any fingers or hands you lops.

      I had to use a leather-strap-equipped Slinger/Leedy Tempo King pedal back in the 1960s and always lusted for a Speed King (it was "The King" back in those days). The Tempo King was pretty much a "slow-joe" and low-power pedal compared to the Speed King (though I used to bruise the top of my foot with the beater whenever I got the chance to use a Speed King). Now I use a Ludwig Atlas Pro single-pedal (sorry...don't have the talent to use a double-pedal) and keep a DW 5000 Delta 3 Accelerator as a back-up (I have a right-ankle issue that the Atlas Pro helps to overcome). The Atlas Pro is a really good pedal...at least for me.

    Both kits sound as they should,in accordance with the reputation .Still,the acrylic kit has a bigger volume which is to be expected,but they both shake the damn room they re in.Good job,guys.

    Hi Gentlemen, as usual your "battle of the drum sets" is brilliant (I watched the first episode too). All these kits are beautifully played, miced (or "miked" ?), mixed and filmed by your team. I am more of "Gretsch guy" but these Ludwigs sound absolutely fantastic. I am of course a Bonzo fan. Keep up the good job. Cheers !!!

    I love the look of the Vistas and the sound of the mahogany kit! Also.... I truly appreciate your honesty on the SPEED KING! 😂🤣 it was the first pedal I owned back in 79 ( I "borrowed" it from the school band room) my freshman year and right before Bonham died.WOW.... Time flies!!¡!✌️👍

    Bonham used 15" 602 sound edges all the way through Houses of the Holy, so they are appropriate for the this video!

    I’m an acrylic guy ever since I got my dw sea glass. They sound even better with G2 or Emperors on the batter heads. I can imagine going back to wood, but if I do these legacy’s have a great full sound.

    I love the new Speed KIng's its amazing (Genius) how it works and it design is 85 years old which amazes me, (so much of Ludwig components , hardware & Drums will always be in style). it does have a different feel, the action is so direct

    Nothing wrong with the Speed King. I still use one. I bought the reissue pedal and love it. Both kits sounded amazing, but I really like the Legacy Mahogany!

    Nothing fills a room with sound like acrylic shell drums..loud, punchy. And they simply look cool. Always wanted a Ludwig Vistalite kit picked up a 1976 vintage original series Ludwig Vistalite kit in clear blue a couple of years ago. Really like them I found head selection is important I have Evans Level 360 EC2 clear heads on both the batter and resonant sides of the toms and bass and that works well. Unfortunately the 9 x 13 rack tom developed the dreaded shell crack that plagued the original series Vistalite drums it still plays fine I hope Ludwig solved that problem with the reissue Vistalite series.

    I love the sounds of acrylic drums they just make me think of Jon Theodore. As expensive as the vistalites are, I’m so worried they are going to crack after time. Maybe they are more durable than I give them credit for.
