Understand this. Rakim wasnt making the album fast enough. Lyor Cohen set up Serch. You know g-damn well Rakim aint having no (white) boy write no rhymes for him! It was all a tactic to motivate Rakim. It was all color. No diss to Serch's (I❤3rdBass) anecdote, but Lyor played yall both like suckas to get a Rakim album to the streets.
Marston Fobbs: True indeed! How would it have looked (especially back then) for word to possibly get out that the God Emcee, most known 5 Percenter on the top of the rap world to have another emcee (and especially a White emcee) write a song for him? Rakim's name would have been tarnished over that. Serch is still dope but the dynamics of that would not have been tolerated at all.
That shit ain't motivated no fucking Rakim. Rakim never gave a shit about company deadlines. That's been well known to anyone that has ever followed him. Serch lives in a fantasy world, always has in my opinion. Shit he ain't even that nice. Everyone knows that the true nice one is Prime Minister Pete Nice, whose rhythms were way more intricate than Serch's.
After Paid in Full was released, Eric B and Rakim were touring inside and outside the United States. Rakim had composition notebooks full of rhymes before he met Eric B, so the writers block thing sounds like bs. At that time Eric B had more juice than Lyor Cohen. Lyor using mind tricks to motivate them to speed them up to put out an album is pure crap. Eric B stated in his interview with Combat Jack in 2016 that he was responsible for getting a better deal for the group when they signed to Uni/MCA in the latter part of 1987. That interview is on UA-cam. Speaking plainly, you can’t make, persuade or manipulate Eric B and Rakim to do a Damn Thing. They set the pace, they’re not allowing anyone (especially Lyor Cohen) to dictate to them that they need to put out another album. In the words of Ed Lover, “Cmon Son!”
Errr no way, and for the record am pretty sure Kris himself would agree with the R being at the top. I mean even lyrically Krs isn't even close to Rakim. To be fair, let's look at a couple of things: #1. Lyor Cohen, from a business standpoint, had a right to be involved with the situation since Eric B. & Rakim were also managed by him (Rush Artist Management). When there are contractual deadlines to meet, management gets nervous because pushing back artists' release dates costed money (at least back then). Lyor didn't care about the artistic backlash it would cause, he only cared about the deadline. So when people say it wasn't any of Lyor's business, that's actually not true. #2. Back then, Rakim's writer's block was well known, as he was just coming off tour for "Paid In Full" and was pressured by the aforementioned contractual deadline to deliver their second album. If you listen to the song "The R" on "Follow The Leader", he admits to the writer's block and delay in a roundabout way: "Whoever underestimated, still waited/pumpin the radio, finally they played it/ you wondered how come the album was late?/I was giving you time to get the last one straight...".
If I remember correctly I have heard Eric B saying that he never asked Lyor to get a ghost to write for the God and the fact that Lyor did came over as huge disrespect to Eric. Most likely Lyor was pushing for completion of follow the leader and Eric may have been like, we need more time Rakim feels like he has a bit of block, so Lyor being a idiot will have told Search that Eric requested it when in reality that never happened.

Clowns on here are unbelievable ! First and foremost, anyone who's heard stories about Lyor Cohen know he's a raging maniac! 2nd, Serch was asked to write something for Rakim, he didn't personally set out to do this for any reason other than being asked (or probably lied to) by the head of a company he wants to be part of. So yeah, naturally he's gonna follow suit. ANY ONE OF YOU CLOWNS WOULD'VE DID THE SAME. If you're trying to get in the game. Now, could Serch have just fell back and said, "naw, that's the God MC. He'll be aiight?" Maybe... but this is a cat, still trying to be put on. He's gonna listen to his boss (a now known lying MANIAC with questionable intentions) Besides, respect to Eric B. But he's suspect himself. He's the reason the best combo in hip hop, EVER, broke up.
Dope emcee, dope group, dope individual. As you can see with his articulation, and depth of history of the culture. Hard to perpetrate when youve come up wit the real. And MC Serch came up in the times of no biting, no crossover, classic era. Plus hes a dope emcee. Salute to a hip hop legend. Sellassie
Vlad, this is one of your best interviews so far... Love the tension, love the stories... Haven't seen all parts yet but hope to see so many questions asked (Nas early years obviously, White Rapper Show most fondly, current rap career, memories from hip hop history in general). Serch mastered interviews over a decade ago, he knows how to both turn up and to give it way too straight (nh)
King Search!! Trust me, if Eric B was 100% in his normal mind and not in album mode, he most definitely would’ve pulled up with Supreme and things would’ve got hot... what a time in hip hop. #AlotOfMemoriesNoRecordings
Remember the time before Rakim's second album dropped, he wasn't considered the GOAT yet. He was among the elite MCs. I don't remember people saying he was the GOAT until after the second album, and definitely when Let The Rhythm Hit Em dropped.
@@artdogg50 After Rakim's first album he was not considered the GOAT, therefore at the time of Serch writing the song, it wouldn't be such a big deal. If you considered him the GOAT after one album, good for you. In the age of Kane, G Rap, even LL, Paid in Full didn't separate him from the pack. It was his subsequent albums that cemented his GOAT status.
lol nigga stop being corny. if he was black you would've just taken it at face value but now you tryna make it about where "they" want the message to go. why would a racist have such a passion for hip-hop culture?
@WORDto BIGbird lmaooo If u pay closer attention. This is the guy behind Lord Jamar. Vlad knows all this. He just let Lord Jamar build up as an influencer.. but he can destroy him just like he build him sadly

His eyes tell all. For me, I see truth. It's thanksgiving right now, and I'm thankful that this man took time to talk about some seriously legendary shit in hiphop (to a fuckin leech: Vlad) so that it's documented (atleast a side of the story). I love this shit. Serch is a real one in my eyes, and I don't care if you don't feel the same.

Im from the West Coast and best believe that Rakim is ONE of the best MCs ever. His lyrics were super on point but I feel at that time he was waaaay to ahead of his time that people weren't ready for him and that's why he didn't really get the true credit he deserved
Lyor played Jedi mind tricks on Serch. He asked Serch to perform the task to bring another level out of him, in which he knew would be the first single to bring out to the public "Steppin' to the A.M.. Rakim was nowhere in need of a ghostwriter's lyrics. Eric B hung up on Serch becuase he had zero knowledge of Rakim needing a song written for him. In Eric B's mind, there was no reason for anyone to write for Rakim so he saw that as disrespect.
It’s all about the money, when you’re on a label that’s what they do,they’re looking for hits,Lupe Fiasco talked about being in meetings, and they would have writers, beat and song already for him,but he turned all that shit down....That’s why he’s black balled to a certain degree,in the industry...He refused to sell his soul.
Shits crazy. Thats why you have to understand how to make a hit. A mainstream rapper has to find the balence of being lyrical & making a hit. Michael Jackson made hits by mumbling a melody from his head & putting the mumble in word format
I think mainstream rappers have to find the formula on how to make a hit because making hits is nothing but a formula. Find the hits for the dumb listeners that dont listen to the album & make the actual album with a whole different sound. Even if a rapper is bad, try to make a lyrical twist to it. Contrary to popular belief there is a vibe wit a song like a Lil B Wonton Soup but try to add substance to it like J Cole ATM or Kendrick. All those silly adlibs Lil B wit the "swag" & "cooking" shit has been used by great rappers. Its all about having that balance
@@anthonycelestin3559 Why compromise your art to fit a formula???? People forget that Hip-hop is counterculture not pop!! It's pop music now, but was always supposed to go against the grain. The rawness and your personality should shine regardless. Sales used to mean little back then and lots of 90s rappers who didn't conform NEVER SOLD millions of records. Sadly certain sectors of the rap fanbase are of the opinion that if you ain't sell you a flop!!! Sign with the majors and you got to play the game. Take Lupe, Lupe had some hot records, but when the album sales came back, it went gold, but not platinum like the label was hoping. So they don't renew his option and have him on hold!!! Forced him to conform with the Lasers project, and now you can't create art like you want!!!
@@jman1562001 Thats true. But having a formula has always been in hip hop. A controversial rappers like Eminem didnt make albums that pleased the pop fans or mainstream listeners but he had a formula to his stuff. Stuff like Marshall Mathers LP is full of rape, homophobic, pill-popping & misogynistic subject matter but yet he was still able to sell that to the masses by making a formula of his previous hit which was "My Name Is: which is very gimmick stuff dat appealed to the dumb down pop listeners & made a similar song wit "Real Slim Shady" & continued the success. Its just business. People get too caught up on the art but forget hip hop is a business. Lyor Cohen maybe a culture vulture but he knows the significance of a Rakim, probably he felt Rakim needed a hit song to legitimize his impact & influence in rap. As impactful Rakim was, he wasnt as popular or mainstream as a LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane or Run DMC in the 80s even though Rakim impacted rap more by changing the sound of rap drastically where u can call him the creator of "lyricism." In rap, people forget its music at the end of the day. Sometimes selling out isnt always a bad thing, sometimes u progress the sound of hip hop by experimenting.
@@jman1562001 Lil Wayne is a polarizing figure by him wat people perceive as terrible rappers that he influenced but he influence Kendrick Lamar & Wayne doesnt get enough credit for his influence. I dont agree wat Wayne always stands for but Wayne has influenced great rappers & respected rappers based on Wayne himself experimenting wit music & styles dat arent really hip hop but made it work in the hip hop aspect. Dat Lupe Lazers album is an anomaly. Lupe wasnt able to mix the production & the lyrics. The poppy production of Lazers didnt suit Lupe style of rap, I know Lupe was going thru label issues, I dont know. It goes both ways, the labels are investing money to u to sell a product & the artist have to find a way not to be manipulated & still be creative despite label pressure. I think labels do weird slave shit to artist too cause they dont trust their investment dat they understand the formula & dats hurting the labels pockets. This music industry is like a balancing act u try to figure out, were too caught up on dat art shit but hip hop is a business as well unfortunately & dats just music in general.
Looking at delivery and rhyming being art..... Kool Keith in the 80s... was above all, people always say ra but really Keith took it where no man went...

Honestly that was some of the dopest shit Search wrote, especially for the time. Not saying he was on Rakim's level, but if Rakim spit that on a song toward the end of the album I would have thought it was some decent filler material.

I’m sure people are asking why would one of the greatest MCs of all time need help. But hip hop was changing rapidly and every great writer goes through a period of second guessing. Nas went through it.
Rakim always took along time to right records he was a perfectionist. He never needed a ghost writer he just took extra long to make his music. But that's what happens when your rapping with lyrics and thought and not repeating the same word over 50 times lol.
Russell Simmons: “Louis Burrell just called us and said they’re going to kill Pete and Serch.” Eric B.: “Yes, I can verify that.” Russ: “So what do we do?” Eric B.: “Fuck ‘em. Just let it happen.”

Channel 97 right, lying that you wrote for the best MC to ever pick up the mike is just corny in my honest opinion
@@penjamin5037 guess you didn't watch the video...
He wrote a song for Rakim but Rakim didn't ask him to write the shit
And Rakim didn't take the lyrics, it became a 3rd Bass song. Morons.
Are fucking kidding me?!??!
Serch is geeked up
Clowns on here are unbelievable !
BS
All facts couldnt have said it better myself
Facts
Vlad is this you?
Probably
Dope emcee, dope group, dope individual. As you can see with his articulation, and depth of history of the culture. Hard to perpetrate when youve come up wit the real. And MC Serch came up in the times of no biting, no crossover, classic era. Plus hes a dope emcee. Salute to a hip hop legend. Sellassie
Professor griff gave this a dislike
😂 😂 😂 Good one
& I did 2
Haahaa
Haaaa Now that shit was funny!
Still waiting on Vlad to bring that up
This was an unexpectedly great interview. Didn't Kno much about this guy but I gained a lot of information through this 👍👍👍👍👍
Serch and Sapp both call Vald out on his B.S..
I said it the first time I heard him and so did many others. Not sure what your point was anyway. 🤷♂️
He said "It was knocking on every Martin Luther I went to" damn. Says how they feel about where the message should go
lol nigga stop being corny. if he was black you would've just taken it at face value but now you tryna make it about where "they" want the message to go.
why would a racist have such a passion for hip-hop culture?
@WORDto BIGbird lmaooo
If u pay closer attention. This is the guy behind Lord Jamar. Vlad knows all this. He just let Lord Jamar build up as an influencer.. but he can destroy him just like he build him sadly
I heard that shit also. The white always comes out of them.
martin luther king blvd is in every hood thats what he means... he went to every hood and the music was knocking there lol
@@ObeyaCorpsArmory Actually it's a long standing joke by whites. ..and if you are white I am sure you know that.
Lyor been fukin shit up since the 80’s 😂🤣
Listen to the lyrics to Steppin to the AM it is a great lyrical track that sounds like something Rakim would spit, Serch was heavily slept on
I remember as a kid when I started listening to Eric B. and Rakim, I thought Eric B. was the rapper and Rakim was the DJ. It wasn't until I saw the "I Ain't No Joke" music video did I figure out who was who!
These stories are fantastic!
I'm waiting for Vlad to ask about the break up of 3rd Bass and Pete Nice dissing Serch on "Rat Bastard"
Twan112785 or the other song by Pete nice dissing serch
Kick the bobo
3rd Bass Legendary group.
-Portrait of an artist as a hood(remix)
-Wordz of wisdom
-Product of the environment (Marley Marl remix)
-Steppin to the AM
To name a few
I had the greatest admiration for 3rd Bass back in the day, but I have the respect for MC Serch after watching this.
Support 3rd Bass! These guys were real deal & tons of class/respect.
Im from the West Coast and best believe that Rakim is ONE of the best MCs ever. His lyrics were super on point but I feel at that time he was waaaay to ahead of his time that people weren't ready for him and that's why he didn't really get the true credit he deserved
Yo Pete Nice be saying Serch is a lier and that never happened 😂
Lyor is a fuckin genius... when he told Rakim i got somebody to write something for u .Rakim got in his bag and said this dude crazy watch this
I hope we get to hear about his involvement with KMD, and Nas.
Mav Hunter word
Mav Hunter Word, first time a lot of us got to see MF Doom (as Zev Love X) was because of 3rd Bass on the gas face joint.
And Non Phixion.
Nice. I like when MC's speak from the heart!!
Pure speculation..however i agree
These Serch interviews have actually been super great
Watch the full video, dont fall for clickbait titles.
"Century to Century you'll remember me in History and not a mystery or a memory."
I really like Serch's genuine admiration for other artist and overall love for hip hop music.
Rakim changed the game. He made rappers before him sound like Fisher Price rappers. They had to step up their game!
To me " You Know I Got Soul" is the perfect Rap song.
Ahead of his time. The God Supreme.
TRUTH IS, HE REALLY NOT LYING... SERCH IS A LEGEND... DOPE IN MY HIP HOP BOOK
He's dreaming rakim is the god mc search 👃👃👃👃👃👃
Ah..."I came through the door, I said before....". Had to go look up 'Make 'em Clap To This' just from Serch's reminiscing. dope classic.
The audacity that he even thought he could write for Rakim is crazy in my brain. I don't know how he even thought that would be cool lol.
Exactly. I wouldn't even entertain the thought.
In those days hiphop record companies tried to be like to big labels of the 70s
I saw something before that said krs didn't get paid for lyrics here wrote for rakim and he was taking him to court. So it's not as far fetched as you would think
th3c0r3 FGO White arrogance...
Cause he was told to by his record label lmao.
MASSIVE RESPECT! Please bring in PETE NICE for an interview!
This video about to go viral for real MC serch writing for Rakim. Even the thought of it it's not good
cikidi harrison It's an OLD story
MC Serch get an interview with sway five fucking years ago about writing for Rakim... bunch of fake hip hop Scholars
Isidro salas Read through these comments bruh... there's A LOT of fake, uninformed, supposed "Hip Hop heads". They're just here to riff.
MC Serch is da man! Keep em coming!
I still play I ain’t no joke 🔥🔥🔥till this day .
Ted Kennedy, , you get the ⛽️ face
The rebuttal/clap back for this interview will be one for the ages...
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE LORD JAMAR RESPONSE TO THIS ALMOST MOMENT IN HIP-HOP THAT IS = TO CEASAR BORGIA HAVING HIS FACE PAINTED AS JESUS. #TAKE EVERYTHING/LEAVE THEM NOTHING
If Serch was black LJ wouldn't say shit, Serch is an mc legend.
Jamar is cool with serch. He was on the white rapper show with sadat.
If you don't have Rakim and Kane in your top 5, I can't fuck with you.....
Nuff respect to 3rd Bass and MC Serch but I call bullshit. Rakim Allah ?!?
Serch is one of those 7 EMCEEs !!
"So when you see me come up, freeze...or you'll be one of those 7 Emcees!" -Rakim
Follow The Leader is def one of my fav joints of all time
Rakim didn't ask for the song. Vlad is constantly trying to defame Nas & Rakim.
@1:41 I was like ... FINALLY A LIE IN THE INTERVIEW 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rakim is the greatest
Yes, Rakim is the GOAT, no question...my all-time fave song from him is “My Melody”....the bars about the “7 MCs”?!?!?!?
BRUH.....nobody touches those bars...NOBODY.
Lol..those lyrics are elementary compared to Rakim he needs to stop
Glad you said it first. I got love for Serch and even more respect for Pete Nice, the better lyricist of the two hands down IMO. But please stop this madness Mc Serch. How many lies can one man tell. 🤦♂️
Honestly that was some of the dopest shit Search wrote, especially for the time. Not saying he was on Rakim's level, but if Rakim spit that on a song toward the end of the album I would have thought it was some decent filler material.
Never agreed so much with anybody in an interview as with Mc Serch .... Great guy, humble, and a great MC himself.
The R would have been Dope on that track! I agree Rakim is the Greatest Rapper of All Time! Step into the AM is Stupid Dope!
True cause that opening verse was solid..The R would murdered that track
@Drink Me It's all a matter of opinion.
I start to think and then i sink into the paper like i was ink when writing im trapped in between da lines i escape when i finish my rhyme...I GOT SOUL SOUL SOUL SOUL SOUL.....YOU GOT IT...
So once again lyor Cohen is at the heart of drama. Smh
I take seven Mc's put em' in a line & add seven mo 'brotha's, who think they can rhyme, well it'll take seven mo' before I go for mine, now that's twenty one Mc's ate up at the same time... Legendary
I’m sure people are asking why would one of the greatest MCs of all time need help. But hip hop was changing rapidly and every great writer goes through a period of second guessing. Nas went through it.
Sky Blylevin nas never had writers
Mo 2k In recent years, yes.
Mo 2k they said he had help for one of his recent albums
Rakim always took along time to right records he was a perfectionist. He never needed a ghost writer he just took extra long to make his music. But that's what happens when your rapping with lyrics and thought and not repeating the same word over 50 times lol.
FOH
Russell Simmons: “Louis Burrell just called us and said they’re going to kill Pete and Serch.”
Eric B.: “Yes, I can verify that.”
Russ: “So what do we do?”
Eric B.: “Fuck ‘em. Just let it happen.”
LORD JAMAR Sick Em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3rd Bass was ahead of their time lyrically. They were right their with Rakim IMO when they came out
LMAO
Y’all violating with this one...Rakim potentially having a ghostwriter? This is supposed to be released after his death lol...I’m glad he hung up on y’all lol
MC Serch had an interview with Sway five fucking years ago on this very subject
Rakim didn't ask. Lyor Cohen asked Serch and then he wrote for Rakim but Eric B. not only turned it down he ended his friendship with Serch. Rakim writes his own shit.
Im 35 and i agree i studied all the so called top 20 albums and paid in full is the greatest album ever made... Rakim is #1. Nas #2
Yoooo!!, ya'll buggin!!.... that's m.c. search, ol heads like me know dude solid asf, and him writing for Rankim would be been righteous...ya'll must've forgot or something..maybe too used to eating this trash they got out now!
omar frazier Serch could never pen for Ra
omar frazier FACTS ! and it's not like Serch is being disrespectful. He came off humble. Lyor Cohen on the other hand 🤔
FOH
NO WAY on earth could Serch write for the God..NOOOOO WAYYYYY!!!! He doesnt even have the ability to write on THAT level...FACTS
It sounds good but that's my era and at no time has search or anyone ever had the chops to write for RA that was some sideways Lyor Cohen bullshit!!
Lmao when dude turned around in the video lol
