Hi Rick, I’ve been watching your channel for quite some time. Above and beyond your musical knowledge and expertise, which is impressive, I firmly believe that your real appeal is your humanity. There’s a reason why you have so many friends and so many UA-cam followers. What a gift you are to all of us out here.
    Cheers

I will be 60 in December. At our age, we have seen a lot of good times and difficult times too. I appreciate the story of your mother. No one loves you like your mother. My mother is gone too. Will see her again some day. Thank you for a great watch. Really enjoyed this one

For me it took a while to realise I was in love with music. When I was 8 I started music school and I hated it. By 13 I had freaked out seeing my best friend play punk rock songs and heavy riffs with a Yamaha Pacifica and a 100w Marshall and I immediately dropped out of classic music school and saved for my first crappy guitar. Learned fast but never took it seriously. It wasn't until university, when my 2nd band was looking for a new singer that I just said "hey, what if I try to sing and play at the same time?". It gave a whole new meaning to my existence. Singing was my hidden power since the age of 2 and I didn't know it because I was too shy and afraid to be a front man. I never looked back.

Their is something in music that some of us cannot abandon entirely. I'm 61 years old, whenever I reach the age where there's a zero (0), I told myself, " I will have to stop loving music & then devote myself to mainstream job. But, weirdly, there's always something that happened that it leads me back to loving it....

My mom was into opera and musicals and Frank Sinatra. My dad was a big jazz head. I got into his collection of 78s, especially boogie woogie piano. He listened to everything, shared his love of blues with me too. The only rock albums in the house was Beatles records. My parents liked them but my older cousins actually mailed some of their albums to us. Lastly, I had my bar mitzvah and thought I would never learn all the notes for the singing. About 2 months in, I started doing much better. Also as a learning tool, the rabbi made a cassette of the music for me to study. After the service when I did my 20 minutes and the other kids 20 minutes who was sick, my mom later asked me if I wanted guitar lessons. Making it through the service gave me the confidence to take lessons and I studied albums and tapes to learn guitar.. Imagine my surprise years later discovering the modes I used in guitar were also in the Hebrew prayers. Rock on Rick, you make music fun.

“I’m getting private lessons, and I’m never practicing.” 😆 I’m taking private drum lessons right now, and I can relate, sadly. I also took private piano lessons as a kid and never practiced. Of course my reasons for not practicing as a 48 y/o man are very different from my reasons when I was a kid. Not distracted by cartoons anymore, just by dad life.

When I was growing up, music seemed like just a natural part of life. I had an older brother and sister who played; I had a community with a town band and a drama guild; I had a school where music was taught two or three times a week. And I had a church where I learned singing and harmony, and heard wonderful music every Sunday. At 65, I'm still playing jazz and rock, and I am grateful for all of these traditions, and it breaks my heart to hear how much we have to fight to keep them alive. My wife and I worked hard through the nineties and the Noughts to support music at the local level, raising funds to buy a grand piano and other instruments for the school for example. I encourage everyone of a 'certain age' to work to protect music programs throughout the community, for the sake of our children, and our grandchildren.

Why did I become a musician? Back in the late sixties, early seventies, with no internet, you'd buy an album and you generally had no idea about the band outside the music. The only info was on the album cover along with photos. I remember buying Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs when I was blown away by Day of the Eagle. No photos, not much info from the album. I thought Robin was a female guitarist. Just because the name, Robin, could be a girls name. Point being, you had to use your imagination back then. There wasn't much info on bands. Not much in print or TV. After wanting to be a drummer, I heard my first Grand Funk Railroad album, the red one. If he could play like that I knew I could! My first guitar was a Gibson SG Special because I saw a photo of Pete Townsend playing one in a Junior Scholastic magazine. Now folks have the internet for everything. Photos, info, music, tabs, crazy!

It wasn’t a whole lot different than the 90s in that regard, at least compared to these days. I started playing bass guitar in the 4th grade in ‘96 after discovering geezer butler through the mighty BS CD I stumbled upon at Media Play (which eventually turned into Best Buy). All I had was that cd case with the little pamphlet inside to figure out whatever I could about them. It left a LOT to the imagination at the time, which I think is missing these days in the terms of creativity.

When I first stumbled on your channel, I got the impression that your’s was mostly a classic rock type channel. Which was worth the subscription.
But this video has me even more determined to get you to try and listen to my current favorite band: The Dead South.
One of the musicians plays celo.
At least two of the musicians had gone to school to be teachers. The celo player moonlights as a structural engineer.
While at first blush, they get pigeonholed as a bluegrass band, their EP Easy Listening For Jerks pt 2 gives you a sense of what music they listen to when they aren’t playing their own stuff.
The boys are currently back home in Canada before resuming their concert tour.

Wendy Carlos “Switched on Bach” did it for me when I was in high school…then in college I took an intro to music elective and fell in love with Mozart… My first love was always engineering but music has always been a part of my life. In the late 70’s/early 80’s I remember a bumper sticker, “Music is basic-keep music in our schools”. I absolutely believe music in necessary to feed our souls, our minds, and our hearts. Keep on keepin’ on, Rick!

My mom helped produce a "Friends in Love" concert with the Utica Symphony Orchestra back in the early 70's in New York. With the rock scene very heavy at the time my head was spinning after seeing him perform and he remained a favorite of mine to this day. I was in a drum corp and played a french horn/mellophone at the time. I also played guitar it was cooler. I dropped my chops and never looked back. Today my love for music is all over the spectrum although Jazz/blues is where all my idols developed from.

Nice that your school and family were so encouraging ofmusic. I always felt like I was doing something somewhat disreputable by playing music. So many similarities though my son is the cellist. Music ran through my mothers side of the family including her playing beautiful piano by ear. I started there and settled on guitar mainly in the early 70's. The Mangione's, cousins of Chuck had the dry cleaners two blocks over from where I grew up in Niagara Falls. I just wish I had music in my main school years but it didn't stop me from getting some plaques for my walls. What a ride huh?! Once again Happy 60th!

Many parts of your story I can really relate to. Also at the same age (13), I heard an orchestra play for the first time- and it was Bach. In the St Matthew's Passion there is a small part for young choir boys to sing in the opening. I was in that. My school put the production on, it must have been terrible; the musical standards of the players could not have been very high. There were a lot of outside people called in though, not just teachers and students of the school. But it still blew me away and left such a lasting impression. It was a defining moment. Something about the string players all playing together and the oboeists, very striking. The loss of your mother I can really relate to, my father died in similar circumstances.

My Brandenburg Concertos CD (Deutsche Grammaphon recording on original instruments) was constantly on a loop while I studied in late high school and university. There was just something about the way everything fit together so beautifully that drew me in. It was uplifting without being intrusive, musically interesting without heavy emotion. Somehow both perfect as BGM but also endlessly fascinating, being intricately woven and wondrous.

    Ithaca is quite a place.
    Great stories, Rick. Big fan.
I remember starting on baritone in 5th grade, and like you, didn't practice too much. But in 7th grade, I switched to trombone. Same mouthpiece, same bass clef, but it was smaller, and easier to take on the bus, and then I could sit next to a girl on the bus, and THAT was a game changer! Played all through school in concert band, stage(jazz) band, and marching band(street). Loved it, but still didn't practice too much. Playing 5 sports and having 3 GFs didn't leave much time. Lost my Dad in 97 and my Mom in 2016. You're a great communicator, and I hope to get another PRS Custom 24 some day, to complement my Mk. III 1x12, Koa, EVM, 100 wt., EQ, road cased Mesa Boogie. Might've gotten it from Joe at Northfield Music.

I have always loved music. As a child I was classically trained as a vocalist and my grandfather taught me the organ. He was an amazing musician. He was self taught but he would play these intricately complex improvised pieces that were mind blowing. The equal of any of the great composers. He started my passion. More than anything I wanted to play guitar but I grew up in a small town with no guitar teachers. Guitars were also expensive back then. You didn't have a huge range of guitars back then. So it wasn't until I moved in my late teens and started working that I could purchase a decent guitar. I bought an early 60's Aria Diamond (an ES 355 copy). I taught myself how to play. I then joined a band and played professionally, writing my own original songs. That was 25 years ago. Now I teach guitar, song writing and vocal performance. I now have 15 guitars that I've picked up over the years. In fact, I just got an archtop with a Florentine cutaway (an ES 175 copy) for my birthday. It was my dream guitar. Music has always been such a huge part of my life. It's seen me through good and dark times. I can't imagine it not being apart of my life.

I'm not a musician, but I've always loved a variety of music, and learned to play the guitar badly, but I've just turned 65 so can relate to the looking back thing :) I love your channel Rick, and can't imagine anyone watching but not subscribing

Wow, I can't believe you are from Fairport! I also grew up there- in the subdivision next to the high school (FHS). I'm a few years younger than you, graduated in 1987. Went to Martha Brown junior high. But I agree... music was very important there. I think that is why I am such a music nerd... ;) Love your channel.
