      Good idea. Some people don't know when to shush. The point is to watch someone else in their first viewing and enjoying the nostalgia of when it was your first go. It doesn't matter if the reactor picks up on every little thing about a show or trying to build them up to a certain moment you're waiting for
      only because of years of repeated watching.
      I guarantee you that you're having a more heartfelt and invested reaction to the show than many who've already seen it. And it gets better =) Much love and have a great week.

    Other shows ask some weird stuff and ask what seems to be difficult questions, but really are pretty simple and straightforward. B5 asks the most simplest of questions: "Who are you?" "What do you want?" "Why are you here?" "Do you have anything worth living for?" "Where are you going?" "Whom do you serve, and whom do you trust?", but you can't have a straightforward answer to any of these questions. They seem simple, but this series shows how difficult answering such questions can be. No other series has had such philosophy as B5 honestly.

    "This show messes with you" It does, indeed, the writing of JMS just does that, also when I see other stuff by him.
    That exchange between Marcus and G'Kar is just heart warming:
    "He is my friend - I never had a friend who wasn't a Narn!"
    "I never had a friend who **was** a Narn!"
    and:
    "- and there is nothing more inherently dangerous as an offended Narn."
    The look in Londo's eyes when seeing his "gift" is so expressive! - and so was the expression in your face, Medusa.
    "Hope is all we have"
    A very interesting conversation between the dead/alive Sheridan and Lorien.... Schroedinger's Sheridan ? 😉
    "Have you anything worth living for?" We have heard that question before in B5, haven't we?

    Season 3 episode 2, Londo and G'Kar are trapped in an elevator. Londo wants to escape and asks for G'Kar's help. It is withheld.
    Season 4 episode 2, G'Kar is trapped in a cell. Londo wants to remove Cartagia from the throne and asks for G'kar's help. An agreement is struck.
    The swirling parallels of Londo and G'kar are amazing. They've always been trapped in the pattern of blood calling out for blood. The context of the situation changes slightly. Both are tired of blood, which allows for a different outcome. The callback down to episode number is just beautiful storytelling.

The best scifi isnt about the lasers and rocket exhaust and tech gadgets per se; it's stories about the 'human' condition in extraordinary circumstances and IMO my favorite tv scifi yarn of all time, Babylon5, does it like no other. Truly phenomenal writing and fully fleshed out characters that become your extended family.

    As incredible as it sounds, Season 1 to 3 was just the build-up, just setting everything up. The great story, the characters, the surprises, just everything is just the build-up.
    This is what happens if someone plans an entire show in advance. These are the heights a show can reach.
    No artificially prolonging the show, no cheap twists to add another season. Just telling a big story. And the sad thing, especially in these days of streaming it's more wasted than ever. When a season, even an episode can be as long as needed to tell a chapter (an episode), a book (a season) or a book series (the entire show)

    The series has considerable influence from Nietzsche. For example, Nietzsche's Appollonian and Dionysian is similar to (resp.) the Vorlons and the Shadows.
    In this episode, Lorien takes the role of teacher, like Zarathustra in the works of Nietzsche.
    In 10:13, he calls Sheridan (and Kosh) out for their nihilism. He doesn't want to live, he just doesn't want to die. If, instead, Sheridan has a reason to live, he will rise above himself (which ironically is shown by him falling) and be an overman or, in German, an Übermensch.

    JMS is such a master. So much of Babylon 5 keeps going back to binaries (Dark/Light, Life/Death, Good/Evil, War/Peace) but everything in life is in threes. No character is truly good or evil in the show but in-between. Valen was a "Minbari not born of Minbar", Delenn stands between the light and the dark, Sheridan is neither living nor dead. The old ones all only see the binaries whereas the new races found the "in-between".

    It's been a while since I read the book, so I don't recall the answer, but I am relatively certain it _is_ addressed in the novel I've mentioned every now and then - _To Dream in the City of Sorrows.¹_
    It's one of a handful of novels that are considered *Babylon 5* canon. It was based on an outline written by _J. Michael Straczynski,_ and written by his wife at the time.
    It talks about Marcus a bit, and addresses _Jeff's_ time on Minbar.

    Something I never considered before but perhaps the Shadows were using Lorien as a human shield, knowing the Vorlons and other first ones would never attack their home base if Lorien was deep with in it. So Lorien thinks the Shadows are trying to honor him but in fact they are using him as a form of defense against the other first ones that know he is there. It's just the strategic bs the shadows would do, like they tried to use the Centauri population as human shields against the Vorlon Planet Killer.

    Another great episode, but still one where things are looking bad for B5!
    Seeing Garibaldi is still alive had me breathing a sigh of relief, but his current predicament raised way more questions than answers, as did the whole Sheridan & Lorien situation!
    Despite his honorable & selfless intentions, my biggest fear of G'kar leaving B5 was that the Centauri would get their hands on him - so now we have 3 people lost from the station!
    I still feel Delenn is acting more out of grief & guilt than anything else too: the looks on the Rangers faces when she said the Whitestars would attack Zahadum - they knew it'd most likely be suicide, but she's Ranger One, they have no choice!
    It was torture watching this on TV & having to wait a whole week, all the scenarios playing in my head but I genuinely had no idea how they could possibly turn thing around again!!

      @brandonreed09 2 роки тому

      It's actually not such a terrible idea. The Shadows had pulled back to Z'ha'dum. They were in disarray with the destruction of their capital city. It must have been very demoralizing having that city destroyed. They must have peak vulnerability at that time as they were definitely not expected to be attacked in that manner and it did such significant damage. It also preyed on their worst fears about what would have if anything Vorlon landed on their planet.

    It's funny that you mentioned Lost, because the producers for Lost stated multiple times that they were very influenced by Babylon 5 when it came to the story arcs and writing for that series. Babylon 5 changed TV forever, but most people don't know it.

    It's interesting you mention "Lost" because I always say without B5 shows like Lost would never have been possible.
    People think Lost was the first show to do a long arc, but without B5 as an example it would not have happened.
    There's only one show I know of before B5 which had a proper arc, its was "Wiseguy" and it had an arc every season. It was about an undercover cop and each season was about a criminal organisation. Very good show, Kevin Spacey was the villain for 1 season.
    In retrospect his character was not far off from his real self, a real pervert.

    i think kosh was one of the last vorlon that truly cared about others and after he was killed the rest of the vorlon no longer cared about what happen to the universe or those in it as long as the shadows were removed. i wish we had gotten more of kosh thru the seasons. when they said they were going to make a new show or reboot B5 i was kinda hoping they would not remake the original but maybe do a prequal, they have so much they could work with from the first shadow war all the way to B5. i would really love to see all of the first ones, the dilgar, and everything that led to B5. just as long as they do not destroy B5 like they have done to every other series like star wars, star trek, Dr Who, LOTR, and others that they have turned woke.

    This season just rocks along. G'Kar going it alone like that is just making us all shout for him not to do it given his status, yet it's so very him. And yes, Lorien, the First One. I'm delighted to see your enjoyment and wonder and occasional bewilderment to the twists and turns of Babylon 5, it's much like the reactions I had watching it for the first time.
    I have to say though that I am worried about the reboot of the show on the CW, a channel well known for it's heavily woke/sjw content. I fear that characters will be messed about with simply for what "the critical drinker" calls "THE MESSAGE".

      Right?! The OG B5 never shoehorned in something just for woke points or because they felt they had to.
      I hope JMS tells them, No show if you want me to change the story to add in woke BS
      I loved how they dealt with Ivanovas love affair with Talia, they didnt make a big deal out of it, no woke ridiculousness.
      It didnt matter at all that it was a lesbian affair as it shouldnt, it wasnt the point of the story. The point was that Ivanova finally let her guard down and found someone, not that they were same sex.

      @@ghostkage Yeah the relationship was dealt with properly, it was allowed to grow and blossom, not like the kind of crap you get from Batwahman where two people meet and they're at it right away.

    B5 was also tragically underrated because watching an episode, with times changing from basketball to whatever remained of a previously "scheduled" show, having the broadcast department to pick it up to whatever elapsed time should continue from. and then at the top of the hour kicked off The News, which started when it should begin.
    The B5 epiodes which just played from whatever time the the basketball overtime interrupted.
    Did overtime rock the world by finishing with interviews.
    If sports' preferential treatment give their past scheduling overtime sat 27 minutes, they but started Babylon5 already 27 or 28 minutes in to the show.
    ...hope nothing "important already happen"
    Next week's scheduled show cancelled.
    Oh, caught part of an episode playing maybe 38 minutes already running.
    Gods they were such a@@holes
    "Wo cares if goy needed an episode's whole storyline?
    Emo basket ball was so much more important than anything not sports related
    As if high school's preferential treatment, stripping funds from any department and dumping its leftovers into what might remain of band, choir and then drama.
    I really hate sports
    ...

    To clarify a few things in your intro (referencing back to your previous video too) Garibaldi helped G'Kar, not only by visiting while he was incarcerated, but also with a connection to a transfer station to move some "items" not to mention a few minor issues in previous seasons. Garibaldi plays both sides of an equation, but doesn't burn bridges where there's a _potential_ greater good.
    Zack is the acting head of security, in Garibaldi's absence, so yeah, him going with G'Kar probably wouldn't work. [Head of security is missing, acting head of security runs off with a Narn on some unexplained quest, 3rd in command is... I'm thinking Lou Welch? Lou isn't ready for that, he's the acting second of security for a week before being 'top dog'? He needs a little more seasoning, to use a hunting, cooking, or military term, before throwing "all security on this station is your responsibility"
    Personally, upon reflection, I didn't pick this up the day the episodes aired, _Station commander is missing, acting station commander departs station on a possible suicide mission_ didn't hit me, but it raises the question, who was in charge while Susan was away? My best guess would be either a certain lieutenant, or... Zack. You don't put the station under the command of the chief medical officer unless there's a medical emergency, so Stephen is out. Can't really hand it over to a Ranger, they aren't part of the in house chain of command, so it would be really awkward. So, Zack would likely be in charge for the time Susan is away. Unless we were going to be dumb enough to hand the situation over to the League of Non-Aligned Worlds and whatever ambassadors remain. [translation: everything has to go through committee, even whether to respond with the defense grid against an armada of warships firing on the station as soon as they came out of hyperspace.]

    • @ciaranirvine
      @ciaranirvine 2 роки тому

      Corwin had proven himself loyal by this point so I guess he would be in charge of Ops while Zack was in charge of Security while Susan was off in the White Star with Lyta to Za'ha'dum

    • @MrDdaland
      @MrDdaland 2 роки тому

      Actually, since they have broken away from Earth force, chain of command can be whomever they decide. In this case, Susan is in charge of the station, Delenne is in charge of the overall war. From there it gets murky.....

    • @steveaustin2686
      @steveaustin2686 2 роки тому

      In other episodes, Susan had mentioned people she was replacing on the command deck for her shift. So there were higher officers than Corwin, but apparently were followers and not leaders, so didn't feature into the show. The RL reason is you can only have so many characters and there would be a LOT more higher ranked officers on something as large as Babylon 5 than were shown.
      Lou Welch isn't see after the GROPOS episode. The actor wasn't a series regular, so schedule conflicts likely came up. The Legion of Fire trilogy has a reason for this as being promoted to a detail back on Earth. Can't really go into any more as it leads to spoilers. The Legion of Fire trilogy is about the Centauri, is considered canon, and is pretty good. The Psi-Corp trilogy, the Technomage trilogy, and The Shadow Within are all good and canon, but have spoilers left. The book To Dream in the City of Sorrows is 100% canon and is set before the S3 Eps War Without End. It details Cmdr Sinclair's time on Minbar.

    No spoilers here. I just wonder how far you are into Season 4 or if you've hit Season 5 yet since the UA-cam video's are way behind the Patreon videos. Season 4 is a real whirlwind of a season. Sadly, JMS learned part way through this Season that Warner Brothers was going to cancel it. That's why Season 5 seems off cadence or unbalanced compared to Seasons 1-4. Those tears in your eye Medusa... The show will continue to mess with you as well as impress you. You'll understand why us older B5 fans are so passionate about this 90's TV show. The story and characters are the most memorable. JMS is a god amongst writers. His Words do truly have Power... Take care.
