    I can’t remember where I heard this, but I’m pretty sure the creators said somewhere that when they were thinking of making the show they wanted to write about a group of friends in their 20s, before they have families, because it is the time in your life when your friends are your family.

    I think they were official and it‘s just Chandler‘s past relationships playing a part and his mind kind of thinking that this must be it then. He‘s been cheated on a couple times and he also has a massive inferiority complex, so obviously (in his head) someone else asking Monica out must mean that she would leave him for someone ‚better‘

    Also I love the fact that you're so invested in Chandler and Monica, because they're my favourite relationship in the show as well. It breaks my heart whenever Chandler lets on how insecure he is about relationships(expecting Monica to go out with that male nurse) due to the issues he had in the past, and Monica somehow always gets him back on the right track, if you know what I mean. Yeah I love their moments together, just like you said they're so cute!

    My doctor was actually on vacation the day I was scheduled to delivery my baby but, she left me in the hands of a very qualified and compassionate colleague of hers (who thankfully wasn't obsessed with Fonzie). The moment I saw my son's foot (he was delivered through C-section, and the doc had him turned away from me at first) my face looked exactly like Alice's when she heard she was a mom. There's nothing like it in the world, my entire perception of what love was changed in a literal matter of minutes.

    The bit where Ross hands Chandler the lamp was improvised on the spot by David Schwimmer. Matthew Perry had no idea he was gonna do that (nor did anybody), and that's why his reaction is totally genuine.

  • @heidos7
    @heidos7 Місяць тому +45

    This is the show's 100th episode and Lisa Kudrow's favourite. Fun fact: Ross giving the lamp to Chandler while on the phone with Emily wasn't scripted. David Schwimmer unintentionally handed it to Matthew Perry who's reaction fitted perfectly with the scene. The Fonzie character Phoebe's doctor keeps mentioning is one of the main characters from the show Happy Days. Also, the Mork character Rachel mentions is the character Robin Williams played on Mork and Mindy.
    I actually really liked Emily before the whole wedding drama. She was a breath of fresh air and despite not knowing each other for long, her and Ross had great chemistry and worked well together. I feel like they were trying too hard to make us not like her and root for Ross and Rachel because Emily's actress, Helen Baxendale, was pregnant and couldn't be on the show anymore. And it worked cuz I used to hate Emily and thought she was being so unreasonable. But now as I've grown older I empathise with her and understand where she was coming from. She had every right to be upset, angry and hurt after being humiliated like that and it's understandable she became insecure around Rachel.
    That being said, I think demanding Ross stop seeing Rachel was not only extreme but very unrealistic. If Rachel had just been friends with Ross it technically could have worked, but she was also best friends (and roommate) with his sister and his other closest friends. So in order for that to work, they ALL would've had to stop seeing Rachel or Ross would've had to stop seeing ALL of them, including HIS OWN SISTER. Realistically, that would never have worked. Plus, the issue wasn't Rachel; it was Emily not trusting Ross anymore. How were they gonna make the marriage work if she couldn't trust him?
    Even if Phoebe's donation hadn't gotten Joey on TV she was stilll doing it to prove a point. I don't know if there is such a thing as a selfless good deed either, but from the show the closest anyone has come (in my opinion) is when Ross not only encouraged Carol to fix things with Susan before the wedding but also walked her down the aisle.
    Chandler saying that Monica is the one who made him the best sex she's ever had is a nice callback to when she taught him about a woman's 7 erogenous zones to help him in his relationship with Kathy.
    Lastly, I've had gallstones which was horribly painful and I had to have surgery to have my gallbladder removed. I've heard kidney stones are worse though.

    I do agree with you. Emily is not wrong in asking Ross to not see Rachel anymore after what happened. I think that she has not broken up with Ross yet because they are trying to do everything they can to save the marriage. Just think about it, think how sad it can be to get married and then divorce just a few weeks later. Emily and Ross are not ready to accept the reality.

    • @Lina_unchained
      @Lina_unchained Місяць тому +8

      I mean yeah I agree...she was FINE with Rachel until Ross showed that he actually can't be "just friends" with her. What she's asking him for is completely justified. If he's not prepared to do that, fine. But if he wants to be with her that's what she needs to feel secure and that's totally valid. Like, many partners wouldn't want you hanging out with your ex at all but Emily was cool with it until Ross did what he did. And I think that's why I'm okay with her making that ask. It would be different if she just showed up in his life and told him to cut off Rachel just because.

    • @jakeDgirl
      @jakeDgirl Місяць тому +4

      @@Lina_unchained Agreed. And although it's a tall ask for Ross not to hang out with Rachel, and therefore might not see his sister and other best friends often... Ross is asking Emily to move from London to New York. Emily will have to leave all her family and friends, move to a place where she has no system of support, and have this issue of Ross probably having lingering feelings for his ex. And although Emily is unaware, Rachel admitted to still having feelings for Ross. That's just a can of worms.

      I don’t think I could ever stay with someone who calls out his ex‘s name at the altar 🙈 I understand why she’s trying to save the marriage but when she allowed them to continue the ceremony I was very confused because I could’ve never done that

    • @Celeborn93
      @Celeborn93 27 днів тому +3

      I think Emily's feelings are completely valid and understandable, but her ultimatum is honestly despicable.
      The implications (of which she is aware) of having someone from a tight knit group basically ostracized to try and fix her own marriage instead of drawing the line, is what makes it such an unreasonable ask.
      I'm not suggesting a way to fix it either, both Ross and Emily should've just called it long before it got to this.

    I think that Emily’s emotional issues are completely understandable. She was humiliated by Ross in front of her family and the man she wanted to marry. If my fiancé (if I had one) said another woman’s name, I would’ve gone off. I do think it was weird that she went through with the actual wedding, the vows, everything, and then just disappeared. That’s something I wouldn’t have done, at least not going through with the rest of the ceremony.
    That being said, Emily’s main issue with Ross is that she couldn’t trust him anymore, especially not around her. I’ve never been married or engaged but, I was almost. Long story in itself but the bottom line? I said no because I couldn’t trust him anymore. When it came to my relationship with him, there was only one woman that I felt threatened by, only one, and he knew this. He got upset, and he went and slept with her. I’ll give him props, he did at least tell me, and he said he regretted it, but no matter how much he claimed to love me, I couldn’t trust him anymore. I wanted to, more than anything, but I literally couldn’t.
    Emily’s request of him not seeing Rachel was both extreme and unrealistic. Some comments have already explained why, but I’ll add that Rachel was and always will be his first love. You can’t forget about them, even when you do finally move on (in most cases; there are some where you end up with your first love) and because she’s one of his friends, and she has close ties with his best friends and family members, he would never actually be rid of her without getting rid of the rest of his family and friends. So in regards to her ultimatum, I don’t agree. With her feelings though, I do agree

    yes, many people do indeed describe the love towards kids as completely new,bigger capacity to love, that they never knew they had, and it sounds wonderful - but it doesn't automatically happen to every person. There's never
    a guarantee for every single human that they'll feel that way. Many people struggle with not feeling much after having a baby, and there are entire threads called "i regret having kids", etc. It's important to
    truly know that having kids is really something that will fullfill you, nurture and take care of someone for years is really your dream, before you have them....

    First of all - I love Monica and Chandler, they are so cute and relatable 🥰 fun to watch them make relationship chicken, without them just giving up. (Everybody take notes 😉 )
    Secondly - In relation to Ross and Emily, I think it is unfair that she is asking him to move away from his son. If he didn't have Ben, it would be more reasonable to drop the relationship with his ex, see his sister for the holidays and find new friends - to fix the relationship. After all she would otherwise have to leave everyone behind to do the same for him. But because he has a son, it is completely unreasonable to ask him to move (in my opinion).
    Expect him to give up a friend where he lives... that doesn't seem unreasonable unless you know the group - then it seems more like a way to get him to take responsibility for a divorce rather than just saying now is enough - after what happened at the wedding.
    But she was also rather unreasonable for not wanting to speak to him sooner, even thought what he did was wrong (in my opinion). 🙃
    Thanks for the videos - love them 🥰

    The producers said that they intentionally went a very different way with Chandler & Monica then with Ross & Racheal. C & M had an up close view of the huge melodrama fiasco with R & R. They wouldn't want a repeat of that. It's why they were keeping it a secret from their friends, and why they didn't "make it official" even to each other in the beginning.
    They were obviously smitten with each other, but trying take it slow, on an emotional level (in spite of the face that they'd already been good friends for 10 years and could not keep their hands off each other).

He played an alien, Mork from Ork, that caused problems in the Cunningham house with The Fonz (aka Arthur Fonzarelli). I love in a group interview after the series had wrapped, they asked the cast the two most asked questions from the fanbase. 1) was each one, individually, whether Ross and Rachel were on a break and 2) it was put to Schwimmer and Aniston, but the rest of the cast piped in, and were asked about the Emily ultimatum to Ross in this season that if she chose commiting herself to him, he would have to 86 Rachel from his life and what they would've done.
    Their answers were fascinating and unexpected in a couple of different ways. One, both questions they all were in agreement and unanimous, no doubts, final answer. Which showed just how in synch they were with each other in real life and all on the same page. But also, two, how mature and adult they were in their thinking with relationships in actual reality and not dramatic effect for maximum comedic possibilities on a show.
    But they all agreed, particularly Jennifer Aniston, that Ross and Rachel were definitely on a break. When pressed on this one, Aniston pushed right back sayng that she often doesn't agree with and align with Rachel's way of thinking or decision making. But understood it and that that type of mentality of unaccountably on her part is self sabotaging and immature for a woman her age. This tied in nicely to the second question where, again, unanimously they all agreed regarding the Ross-Emily situation the same thing. NO SPOILERS. I'll talk around it. But, everybody in the cast instantly agreed if he truly loves Emily, it's not even a choice and if he pretends that it is, he either doesn't really love her, or loves both women, consciously or subconsciously, or just wants it all despite it's a crappy selfish thing to do to your so called newly wedded wife. It's already not cool to be hanging around an ex if you're supposed to be in a committed relationship. They should be able to provide whatever it is emotionally that you are getting from a previous lover hanging out. It sends a bad message. Intuitively we all know this on a deeper unspoken level. It's also a younger person idealistic way of thinking. But not a realistic way. Its not how people and relationships with actual feelings and invested messy complex emotions operate in the real world. Youth want to go against the grain of human nature and rise above basic instincts and how everybody is wired more or less at a base level. Aniston said that all that is true, bit really it all comes down to maturity and growing the F up. The general rule is if you still need to hang out with someone you were intimate with and saw you naked, and don't see the problem with that, then the problem isn't with your partner whose calling you out, but with you. You're the problem. You're still thinking with immaturity. And if the ex comes with a group of friends and they're a all or nothing package, call it an era and move on. It's hard to tell a person in their 20's this because they're still in the eye of the storm of youth and still got some living to do before wisdom sets in. Eventually you move on. If you sleep with someone, that's why you have to seriously weigh the consequences because it really is going past the point of no return. If it doesn't work out, it jeopardizes the friendship absolutely. Because things do change. And honestly, how often really is your ex in your inner circle friends group? That's practically a tv troupe and Hollywood invention to create tension and story telling possibilities. It also keeps your characters in a holding pattern and immature far longer than they should be at their actual age because tv characters aren't really allowed to change much or they will lose their audience and what worked successfully before. Unfortunately, people watch these shows, identify with them and then confuse it for real life and how interpersonal relationships should work too when television is just fantasy league escapist entertainment taking extreme poetic license with reality. I thought it was very telling though the cast were all united in these issues and showed that by middle age, they could look back and see it all so clearly it comes down to maturity.

    I can say from EXCRUCIATING experience, kidney stones are horrible. No one should ever have to go through that, it’s absolutely miserable. The passing of the stone isn’t the worst part - or at least wasn’t for me, but the pain when it was moving through the body was agonizing. At the worst point, I could barely stand, it felt like someone was holding a power drill right into the base of my spine and sides at the same time.

    I think Episode 3 speaks to the inevitable problem that arises when a couple decides not to label themselves officially. When there is no line set, it’s easy for things to go further than they did here, and people get jealous.
    Regarding why Emily is still with Ross, the short answer is that she loves him, but I imagine it’s not dissimilar to how people who’ve been cheated on behave when their partner is around people of the gender that partner is interested in. We can talk about the logical thing to do, but humans aren’t logical in love. 😅

    PBS is the public TV station in the US. It has a lot of documentaries and children’s programming. It gets a lot of its funding from the viewers donating, and so multiple times a year they will do these pledge drives where they have a whole day of (usually) terrible programming and cheesy hosts, and people call in and offer to donate money. It’s basically like a six hour long commercial lol
    Also, I never understood the argument that that if you enjoy doing a good deed, it makes it selfish. I think you need to look at your motivation and make sure you weren’t doing it for personal glory or your own ego, but I think you can help others without it being selfish. I think feeling good about it helps us overcome our own selfishness and start thinking of others more naturally.

    Emily deciding to stay with Ross at all is really dumb, because she should have known that relationship was dead the minute he said Rachel's name at the alter. Regardless, Ross and Rachel do have feelings for each other when he's dating Emily, it'd make me nervous too.

    I found out the day before going to give birth that due to my doctor having a falling out with some others at his practice that he could no longer work at my hospital (it was a non compete issue). I ended up telling the other doctor off on the phone basically turning into the worst version of myself. An hour later I got a phone call back from my doctor saying they made an exception for me. So I can tell you the hormones might make us crazy but crazy is also effective at times.

    When I first watched as kid, I really hated Emily. After a couple of years, I now realize that she was completely on the right by asking Ross to not see Rachel. Imagine that the man you love and married said someone’s name at the altar and then proceeded to go the honeymoon with that person. I would never go back with Ross but since she did, she is right to demand certain things from him.
    Great reaction, love your videos

    In answer to your question about “finding the right doctor,” in the US, you can absolutely fire any of your medical staff and ask them not to be in your room anymore. I fired one of my nurses during labor. I would ask for options, and she would only give me the worst case scenario. One time she literally said “your baby could suffocate in three minutes.” While that may be accurate, it wasn’t helpful cuz I wasn’t at that stage yet. I found it very annoying that she basically was trying to scare me into making a decision. Even my doctor was annoyed at her. Her boss happened to be the next nurse that came in, so we just kindly asked that she not be in our room anymore. We didn’t even have to give a reason. We just asked that she not come in anymore.

    After all that happened, honestly, Emily's request is justified, maybe not the total animosity, like pretending that they don't know each other but like, they should no longer intentionally be hanging out. It's true that Rachel is part of their very close friend group but when you are married the dynamics change, one is that you won't be hanging out with your friends that often, 2nd is that decision of where you will be living is just not up to one person, and most of the time couples decide based on what benefits BOTH that's why those who really plan for marriage shop for home. This could be a solution for the "not seeing each other" often because of the living in the same apartment complex situation.
    Plus, in these past EPs Ross has actually been the most inflexible in terms of their living situation in planning for the wedding, even when he was the one in the wrong, it was still Emily who had to adjust, so many pre-requisites that should've been checked before marriage just started cropping up. Just really goes to show how Ross was not ready for this marriage. That's my take, just based on these EPs, we'll get to the next ones once you react to them LOL!

    Emily is completely in the right for wanting Ross to cut off Rachel. Ross and Rachel love each other too much and it will never work with Emily if such an ex is still in the picture. I agree that it would be better to just end the relationship. But they are MARRIED. They gotta at least try to work it out. And if they're gonna try, the best way to do it is by building Emily's security back by being away from Rachel. I mean, after all that has happened, Emily is still willing to leave London - her hometown, her family and friends and MOVE for Ross. The least he could do after making such terrible mistakes is not talk to the ex that is still in love with him.

    It may not be totally unreasonable, but it is impossible what Emily is asking. Rachel is not just a random ex girlfriend than Ross dated for a while. she is also Monica's best friend and roommate. And the six of them do basically everything together. What does Emily think Rachel would do everytime Ross comes over to see his sister or the gang wants to hang out at the apartment.... Rachel has to leave her own home? She is basically asking all in the friendgroup to accomodate and make sacrifices just so that Ross never sees Rachel again. They could not hang out at Monica's place as a group ever again, because Rachel is there and you can't ask her to leave her own home. And her demands just get worse and more unreasonable.....
    Emily has every right to be mad at Ross and feel akward around Rachel, but like said Rachel is not just some random ex. It's like when Rachel and Ross broke up, they had to get over the anger or otherwise that was it for them to ever hang out again as a group of six.

    • @oq1106
      @oq1106 Місяць тому +2

      None of this would be a problem if Ross and Rachel were people that could be trusted. Emily is doing the thing many cheated on people do initially: they are looking for a solution that will 'contain' the cheater into a space where he'll be faithful, because they don't want to accept that cheaters cannot be controlled and that the relationship isn't salvagable because of that.
      It's a really bad way to try and regain some dignity, control and power, because it's just so incredibly humiliating to accept that the only real power she has here is the power to leave.
