Woow mad respect for your honest marathon experience 👌. Time isn't everything, even 4h30min would be still good. Remember it is one hell of a distance and most people will never run a marathon in their life. I can tell you one thing, with some dedication and more long distance experience you can take at least one half hour of. But give it time, like 2 years and 5 marathons later. I did 16 marathons in the last 4 year and could take almost an hour of my first marathon where it felt also like hell for me. And how older you are getting the better you can handle the marathon beast , and i don't mean time but dosing your power and dealing with the pain that comes with handling "the marathon beast" 😎. Keep up the good runs bro 💪
Great effort Kush! Not the time you wanted but the end of the day you enjoyed an amazing day... and completing a marathon is never guaranteed. Each marathon has a its own unique story even though we all complete the 26.2 miles. With NYC this story hasn't finished yet!
Thanks for sharing I had similar experience in Amsterdam where I hoped for 3.45 to beat my London time in April. The lack of long runs hit me at 15 miles and downhill from there. I hope to run Chicago in 2024 and have a robust plan which I will implement in April.
We all have different bodies and experiences so please take my comment as just an anecdote which may or may not apply to you because I am no armchair doctor. I had several issues with cramping, and besides supplementation and electrolytes (the usual stuff really) I did a couple targeted sport massages and felt my calf loosen ever since. Even my plantar pain is now more manageable. Planting a seed here but again, you know your body best. Good luck for the next marathon, you'll crush it because you have the best attitude
What an awesome achievement to complete one of the 6 majors! Forget the pain and go again better next time. Whatever it takes. More miles a week, perhaps 40+, you’ll approach sub 3:30. What you may think is unthinkable now will become cold reality for you before you know. Keep building 🎉🎉🎉
There is lots to admire in your effort and attitude. Well done. You offer a great comment too: "The marathon doesn't give a Sh!t for your plans." I hope your Stoicism carried you though. Bravo! I look forward to more of your videos.
Not bad dude. The inability to move ahead due to the number of people is frustrating. Another race under your belt. Just keep coming back stronger and wiser. Cheers mate!
Marathons are incredibly hard! Just by doing it you are already setting yourself apart from everyone else. The sub 4 will come with time. I would suggest salt tablets to help with the cramps, and slurping down a gu pouch every 30 minutes. That is what helped me when I finally ran a sub 4 in San Diego. Keep pushing! You will get there!
Thanks for the view down chicago marathon. While cycling an old man told me that chocolate milk helps prevent cramps, perhaps you might want to look into it.
Congrats bro! Next time, you will do it in sub 4 hours, you just have to continue what you are doing💪 On Sunday I ran my first marathon and I'm 15. I docummented everything: my trainings, the marathon and the obstacles I had and I'm going to post a video about it like you did!
@@RunwithKush So, Good Luck!Since you gave me a lot of story-building ideas, I would be very happy if you watched my marathon video too, which I'm going to post.
Congratulations... keep on running, you now know what you have to do better in training and nutrition, I'm 100% sure that you will reach your goal to finish under 4 hours at the next marathon. 👍👍👍
Well done. Keep at it and you'll get there. Miles over time. I wasn't sure I'd ever run sub-4 after my first -- a 4h49m sufferfest -- but ran 3h15m three years later. Consistent weekly mileage is the key. BTW, my third marathon was 4 hours and 3 seconds! I won the heartbreak prize which was actually quite nice. 3:59:56 on my watch, but no chip time at the small race. I thought I'd make it until I saw the finish clock and realized my error.
Hey man, I ran my first marathon last Saturday shooting for under 4 as well. Something similar happened to me, calf cramps at around 16mi which slowed me down and had me stop every few minutes to stretch. Came in short by 1m 43s. Bittersweet and totally understand how you felt. What gives me confort is the fact that there will be always a next time if we stay healthy. Congratulations on a new finish!
Still amazing!! I was hoping for sub 4 too, but I had plantar fasciitis for last two months! I also use to cramp so much but taking magnesium supplements had been helping .
Great work! We started in the same corral and had the same goal. I haven't hit a sub 4 yet and I have a few more times to try, with NYC and London. We finished around the same time too! Must have just missed you!! I'll be following along to see you hit that sub 4!!!!!!
Really enjoyed this video with the detail you provided. I'll be trying for sub-4 for the 3rd time this Saturday, and it's a good reminder for that many of us it's not as easy as we would like. 🙂
All that matters is that you went for it and you still completed a world major marathon! Super inspired by your effort, I’m running Indianapolis in less than two weeks and this video just got me hyped. Thanks for sharing 👊🏾
Highly recommend sodium loading in the days before the marathon while hydrating but also getting in lots of sodium during the race to help with the cramps
I ran in the F corral too so I was totally looking for myself in your video at the start line haha. I found the same thing in regards to it being congested. But I was put in the wrong corral. I should have been in C or D. Still finished with a 3:31! Congrats on a great run!! 🎉

Hi! I also tried to hit the sub 4 hour, until mile 20 everything was on track, but after the cramping started, and I finished 4:09:06 in Chicago too. This was my 10+ marathon, evert time we can learn something from it. Just go and run, and have fun!
Great content kush. It happens that's marathon like you mentioned in this video. I had similar problem in my first 2 marathons, i was thinking its because of lack low sodium but at the end you got to get more miles per week and get your quads and hamstring use to high mileage.. Once I started running 50 or 60 miles per week ( based on your goal time) I noticed cramping gone and able to do negative split race. Consistency is the only slow and 100% answer to it. I ran same race as well, great experience.
Inspiring! Got my second marathon on the 28th in Nashville, but I definitely know the feeling of getting caught behind lots of people shooting for slower paces, so gonna make sure I get towards the front of the start line this year
Man, totally feel you as I had the same goals and experience last marathon. Sucks to watch the goals slips away, but when a cramp comes back and brings its family and friends along with it, there's little we can do! Well done on finishing (you could have quitted but didn't, so that's something), and best of luck next time!
I know it wasn’t the time you wanted, but you grinded out a finish! I was there too, and agree that the course was extremely congested and it was difficult to avoid weaving. Onward and upward!
Great video and congrats! My calves were cramping a lot after longer runs. I did some PT (dry needling) and started wearing compression sleeves on them. I also started wearing shoes with a higher drop (at least 8mm) and that really seemed to help.
I ran chicago aimming for 4hr too. Got cramp on 8mile so i changed to 5hr goal instead lol turning it into city run -_- but nevertheless very good atmosphere and fun! We all got two free beers + medal equally no matter the time.
Congratulations! There are two kinds of people: Those of us who are runners and completely understand the work and dedication that goes into marathon training and racing and celebrate you for your wonderful accomplishment...and non runners who may not even know how long a marathon is but will likely understand it takes a lot of work and dedication and will celebrate you for your wonderful accomplishment!
Give it a go. I definitely underperformed on the day. I ran a 4:00:44 and 4:01:57 in 2022. At that time the Garmin prediction was around 4:15:00. I hope you crack it. Good luck.
Forgive me for being rude but I'm intrigued to see your training block because you should be able to comfortably hold 9 minute miles if your doing months of a training block .. surely
My training block was good. On average in the 16 week plan, I ran 28 miles per week. Longest long run 19 miles (I run to time, so 3 hours). I achieved a 5k PR of 21:58 on a time trial which is nearly 2 mins faster than this time last year when I ran a 4:00:44 marathon in London. This is why I was quite confident for Chicago but alas, on race day I didn’t get going.
@@RunwithKushYou and I had similar goals. My 'A' goal was a 3:45. I ran a 3:47 using the runners world sub 3:45 training plan. Peak mileage was 45 miles, running 5 days per week and longest run during the training block was 20 miles. My previous marathon times were all right above 4 hrs.
If I ever decide to do a full marathon, my weekly miles will be minimum 40 miles a week. I'm currently at ~33 miles a week for my next 1/2 marathon will a goal of sub 2hrs.

@11:28 you csn hear Kofuzi cheer on someone!
Nice work. Did you use the Garmin race predictor by chance? Curious what it said if so before the race.
It was around 3:45:00. It’s quite accurate for me up to half marathon distance.
@@RunwithKushoof, mine says 3:55. I think I’ll still give it a shot, but experiences seem to vary. Do you also use the HRM pro?

You might try wearing compression socks if you are having cramps in your calves.
I have been considering this for the next one. Nothing to lose.
What screen are you using on your watch to see the exact predicted finish time?
It’s called Race screen and it’s free on Garmin Connect
Do you take electrolytes during the run?
You said you drank water and took salt tabs, did you take gels?
Took 7 sis gels
