Cheers guys 🍻 Say hello to John for me! Had beers with him the last couple years at Princeton 🍻 What a beauty 71 Villain!!! We have a family up here that had 4 650’s and a 440 years ago, wonder if that was one of them??? They’re very rare! Thanks to the John’s for letting us see your collection and for filming it! I love Speedways too! Way ahead of there time! Would love to own one some day 👍 Keep the carbs clean 🍻
I love those older sleds with beefed and bigger motors,!! I loved the Rupp nitro sleds, those things hauled the mail! Great video!! Great to see there's people still out there tinkering with those older sleds!!
I'm from Canada and have seen the 440 model but a 650 Villian is the holly grail, not many built. This is a beautiful piece of snowmobile history! Back in the day these SpeedWay sleds where deadly in drag racing. Awesome collection !!!
I remember the Speedway sleds in a dealership when I was a kid along with Rupp mini bikes at the same place in the early '70s !!! thanks for the great video and info on the old machines!!!
Wow what a piece! I cant believe he only got 3rd...should have been 1st. My favorite part is the snowflap with the checkered flags...reminds me of the 90s when my xcrs had flag decals on hood and seat...thanks for the video
Our original local Arctic Cat dealer also worked at Kohler in the engine department. (Some people at Kohler make bathtubs and toilets!) He was an engine test pilot and would run Speedway snowmobiles on the air strip at the Kohler airport.
Pretty sweet. I owned a 295 and replaced it with a 440. At some point spit out a bunch of cleats and it sat for years. Gave it away around 1990 or so. I remember it had a Comet 100C clutch on it. Belts at the time couldnt handle these machines so had to be careful. Absolutely a fright trying to trail ride them due to handlebar configuration.
I remember another more sophisticated version front suspension called the " Cobra" which employee a lay down hydraulic shock and coiled compression spring, which laid down on the ski. with a pivoting bell crank

I own a very similar sled. Either a late 70 or early 71, 340 Sach single free air. The exhaust was very similar except it was painted black, the stinger was blowing on my left foot. Wearing white felt Army surplus Bunny Boots, the exhaust lite my boot to a smoldering fire that burned a hole in the boot. The carb blew back gas on my suit that was soak with gasoline, surprised it did not catch on fire, everyone smoked at the small local races. It was very unpleasant to ride, the engine had to rev high to engage with jerk. The dealership in Mounds View had no business sell a kid a death machine like the Alouette. No idea what happened to the sled, I went in the service, and it was gone when I returned. I also owned a 60 something 292 Alouette. Only person to own two Alouettes am a slow learner.
Is it possiable to send me a picture of the recoil on a 244 polaris recoil from the back side? I just picked up one that either has the wrong recoul or wrong cone, they dont match up. Thanks
Mine has 6 but either the cone is to big or the recoil dog dont come out far enough to catch. I think its the cone thats wrong but dont know for sure. Looks like a 449 fan cone
Thanks!
Thanks again Jeff!

I owned a similar sled, a late 70 or early 71 340 Sach single free air. Very similar with the tuned exhaust and the raised place to place your knee.

Carling Black Label was a Canadian beer brewed by Carling O’Keefe Brewery which is now part of the Molson Coors Brewing Company. Ah the 70’s eh!
Thanks!

Do you index your spark plugs to face the intake tract ?
I don't.

There were two different recoils for those motors depending on the year. One had 4 bolts and other had 6.

@@bobnewman9493 Best thing to is to go back and watch the videos on the Polaris colt singles.
