Rebuilding Patti's Rusty Old XTRA 12 Skid! Polaris RXL Vintage Snowmobile.
It took 2 crappy Xtra 12s to make one good one. I threw every trick I knew of at it and made up a couple new ones! Unseizing stuck shafts, making a new shaft, a pile of bearings, some elbow grease and one whole day - but I got it rebuilt. The next day it went back in the sled.

St Germain Snowmobile Swap Meet 2024
Nutter, I have the exact machine. 95' xlt sp. I cleaned all 3 carbs now I want to set the slides and idle screws. Do you know the factory specs for slide clearance. I saw a two drill bit technique. 7/32" for the slide and cable then 1/4" for the idle screw gap. But that was a 500 twin. Do you know the press for the 600 triple? Thanks!
I don't know that spec but you can download the manual from vintagesnow dot com.
We had 4 of the Polaris TX 300 playmates when I was a little kid, i believe they were 1970 or so that I learned to ride on. My dad road a 72 colt twin headlight that he loved. I wished I still had them ! Very rare now.
great stuf thx
Getting aluminum shafts out of steel tubes can be a real struggle. I have tried drilling them out...messed up the tube. I have tried melting them out...takes a lot of gas, makes a mess, inside of the tube is nasty. Air hammer works great, if it works at all. I have had the best success with a chunk of threaded rod and a piece of thick wall steel tube to pull the shaft out of the tube. In extreme situations you may have to heat the tube, and if that doesn't work...heating and shock cooling it to break the bond. If you have the puller wound up tight when you quench the part, often you can hear the pop when it lets go. If the corrosion is really bad, or the tube has a slight bend, you really have your work cut out for you. On the ones that refuse to come out even after they have broke loose, I will soak them in penetrant, put the puller on one end, and air hammer a bolt screwed into the opposite. So far I have always won. I assume I am making new shafts in most cases, so the shafts are sacrificial. The best tool I have found to polish the insides of the tubes after the nasty rust is out, is a 3/4" dingleberry hone.
Great video Nutter! Skid rebuilds are no joke! I got a small taste of it a few seasons back when I had to rebuild shocks on my IQ 600 skids (2 of them) in Dec on the garage floor (thanks shock shop and Willie in Becker, Mn)!
Right on!
Good times.. good times. Been through many rusted Brut suspensions just to get usable parts. One of these days Ill get it right. 🎉
I feel your pain!
I’ve soaked some of them rusted skid parts in the parts cleaner solvent for a month or two and they come out really nice.
Cool.
That hood ornament is from a Oldsmobile
Would a skid out of a prox be a better suspension and would it bolt in. I have put newer sc111 skids in a few of my sleds. great upgrade.
You can make anything fit anything if you are willing to drill holes and spend money!
Nice video brother. I’ll be working on a xtra 12 this weekend. Have a cold one
Thanks! You too!
I'm kind of amazed the air hammer worked that well I have not tried that but I'm pretty sure I need to get a good air hammer. I've drilled them out plenty of times....or melt.
Check out the Astro Pneumatic "Thor" air hammer.
I could watch these videos constantly
She's looking good!! Lots of work. Have you ever had to stick this much time into another sled?
Brads Ultra XCR was pretty close.
When I had my 91 rxl I read the starting procedure and it said the battery has to have at least 12 volts and the first pull was to sequence the injectors and it should start on the second pull and it worked every time for me
Right.
Rod with Sand Paper on the end , old Gynecologist trick ?
LOL!
It’s not the Beer ! I always think like this ! It’s a Gift
I like your bench organizing , can’t find something , have another Beer ! It’s exactly where is supposed to be !
Kroil is good stuff !
Sure is. Expensive as hell, but definitely worth it. My shop will never be without it again.
May the Beer be with you ! Use the Force ! ( twist offs ) Cans ? See Instructions , Lift Tab , Skäl
It's the best, but I think it needs to set overnight to really work.
Rebuilding the slid , I did that 2 years ago , 14 new bogie wheels , anti stab wheel kit for the front of the rails , rebuilt shocks , new slides , strip and paint everything ,,and few new rods , and bolts , close to $1500 bucks , Skäl , and that doesn’t count the Wahl Brothers drives
Holy cow! How do you spend $1500 on a skid? NOS everything and then powder coat it all?
Air hammer is awesome in most circumstances. That was a pile of work!
You bet it was!
looking real good .all is great when you have a reliable sled
Hopefully it's reliable when we are done. :)
More fun to fix stuff not in the snow in -15 degrees! Fun to see them rip though
Hoping to have ti ripping soon!
Ahh yes. The infamous Xtra 12 . Its truely a love / hate skid ! I have two '98 Classics with it ( plus a third donor sled ) . Hates...... real heavy, super complicated, shitload of things to grease, allways worn / froze up, and neglected . Real involved to get set up right, holds a hunnert pounds of snow when caked up and real hard to clean out. Loves ............... rides superb when set up right ( allmost as good as M-10 ) . I set mine up extra soft with a good amount of static sag. I keep the spring preload light so they bottom out some on the big bumps. When set up that way, the track can easily drop into potholes and dips and it actually makes for a smoother ride. I also set the hydraulic damping on the stock shocks that have the adjustment screw fairly light. Its a complicated skid, and alot of work and adjustment to get it right, but honestly the only thing better from that era was M'-10 .
I set them up extra soft too.
@@nuttersspeedshop May as well. I tried settin em up stiffer and it didnt help anything. It only made the ride more harsh. It looks to soft if you are not used to how the X 12 is but, it sure rides nice that way.
Can we expect 2 videos a week for the winter months lol?
I'm not promising anything.
Outstanding episode. Nothing is more relaxing than to watch the restoration of a Polaris. Yes your end was a different story obvious 😂. Can't wait to see the skis lift up on the first throttle up.
It will be a while yet. But it's almost ready!
About the air hammer- A wise man once told me "Never use ass, when you can use gas"
Awesome saying!
need some snow now
Absolutely!
Its not a addiction, its a life style. Nutter your video's are awesome!
Thanks. Glad you like them!
Man what treasure trove everywhere you look
Randy has a great collection.
Oh yeah pre season start ups are fun! Started my storm after it’s long slumber clogged pilot jet backfired out the center carb started on fire 😂
Vintage sleds are fun :)
First video I’ve found of yours. Love it, keep it up
Thanks. There's a couple hundred videos available if you want to see more.
My XLT will give me a little "boom" almost every time I dump some gas down the plug holes too.
Good to know it's not just me! LOL
Mr. Nutter Hello and greetings from Sibley Iowa. I started watching you fix up old sleds on You Tube about a year ago and really enjoy your realistic take on sleds and shop tactics. I have come to Snowmobiles later in life (47) and find myself fixing and doing what I can to keep them in decent shape. Carburetors are sort of mysterious to me. Most of the sleds I see have Minkunis. What do you recommend for cleaning them? I'm generally in a hurry and take them apart and hit them with brake cleaner and call it even. Should I be using fresh rebuild kits? Also getting them set and especially the chokes seems to give me trouble. Any help or tips would be great. Thanks and good luck with the Ski Daddler project.
We have shown cleaning carbs several times. Please go back and take a look. I rarely buy any new parts for a Mikuni. You can use brake cleaner or carb cleaner or get an ultrasonic and try MasterStages 2020 (get this on Amazon).
Lol,i love it....ready.....chick,ahh,yummy adult cold snacks are great
1971 puma, with a running gear from a 96 bearcat, skis and front suspension from a 96 jag, motor, whatever triple you want.Hiw much you charge me to build it

@nuttersspeedshop ok,ty
@nuttersspeedshop I was trying to get that built for my grandfather so he can pull his deer out the woods, and those are narrow and can drive through the hardwoods,or soft and tight spits, and longer track is good for hills, and he won't ride anything newer than a 73,but thanks, I'll find someone local
Just like the good old days fix twice as much as ride . Merry Christmas
You got that right!
Great teaching video on how to resolve early seasons startup problems...You guys are one of my favorite channels. Keep pumping out the vids. Dennis is lucky that XLT didnt catch fire with the break locked up. Do a vid on caliper rebuild please.
I've shown a caliper rebuild on the channel already but maybe Ill do a short one as a stand alone sometime. The Patrons got to watch this caliper rebuild on Patreon.
Thanks for the donation to the Pizza and Beer fund!
No snow yet!!!!? Got 50 miles on Friday night in S.W. Lower Michigan 8” of lake effect snow. Trails closed Saturday night. Enough left to test and tune 👍 Got a 71 Skidoo Olympic, and a 71 chaparral Firebird 400. I’d like to restore. Wife wants me to donate them to somebody who has the time and experience. Let me know if you’re interested.
I heard there was lake effect snow. Nothing here. Thanks for the offer on the sleds. That too far for me to go. I'm also out of storage space LOL.
It might be worth a trip. We have a snowmobile salvage yard on the other side of my town. Look up Stauffer‘s snowmobile salvage. He’s into vintage restoration also. Thanks for replying. I love your content. Keep up the good work.
We recieved about 2 feet of snow so far. Rode 3 different sleds a total of about 150 miles since wednesday. Thaw this weekend settled the snow for a great base this comin week. Only issue was a tach light went out. Otherwise everything trouble free. 1971 Johnson Skee Horse, '96 Yamaha Venture, '98 Polaris 500 Classic.
@@nuttersspeedshop Parts of Da Yoop have got up to 4 feet of Lake Effect so far.

I've had a couple. It happens.
Cheers guys 🍻🍻🍻 Welcome aboard Andy!! Hey, I always thought leafer sleds meant sleds with leaf spring front ends, not sleds that drive on leafs lol You’re right John, you guys do look like you’re having a ton of fun!! Especially the Wild Bill sleds! Clean the carbs!!! 🍻🍻🍻
Clean The Carbs Rob!
You guys are having fun ! I remember those days. Glad you are still having them. I watched a video the other day of. someone going up Rt 77 to Grand Maria’s Michigan that sounded just like you ! Love the old narrow ski sleds. Everyone should learn to ride on one. Enjoy winter !
The best wheelie sled I’ve ever ridden was my brothers old John Deere spitfire 340.
Typical issues with season start-ups. Thank god for beer and good friends!
You bet Randy!
Dennis says das boot!
Just an FYI on the Arctic Cat Mono Rail.. It is used on the mountain and off trail sleds to heip the sled tip easier for easier side hilling and carving which essentail for off trail riding. I haver heard it works well in most off trail conditions but not all. Depends on how set-up the snow is. Most still prefer the twin rail for all other riding but mountain steep and deep.
Hey nutter I really appreciate and love all your videos. Are any of you guys interested in buying a 99 xrc800? I'd like to get as close to 1500 as I can. I live in international Falls MN if you're interested we can exchange emails or numbers or something I don't have Facebook or anything like that
Thanks! Yes, I'm interested. My e-mail is in the description. nuttersspeedshop at gmail Please send me some pics!
@nuttersspeedshop I just emailed you
Nutter how much does that thing weigh? One handed. My jaw dropped. lol
Love it
if you open the secondary and a shorter belt is that not going to give you a lower take off RPM ? but it will shift out faster ?
If it was right in the first place I wouldn't have done this. The new belt is wider, as I mentioned in the video. It sat too high and was too tight. I corrected that.
I had same snowmobile same motor. I hit something with it and got stranded up in the mountains because it put a slice in the fuel tank! I ended up doing what you did for the tank and drove that thing till the wheels started falling of underneath it! So I put the motor in a old Polaris that was a 1 lunger! Got years of use out of it!
Sounds like you got a lot of use out of it!
