+Micro Banshee it does, doesn't it? Some reviewers and users complained the 140€ / 110 pounds is expensive compared to a Volca Bass with 3 osc and sequencer, but I think if you compare it to TB-3 or the Cyclone TT-303, you get a lot (close 303 sound, analog circuits) for the money
I just got one of these and it kicked a tt-303 onto the local classifieds. i did a comparison, and this is actually a very good clone - but one a lot of people don't realise is that the much of the potentiometer scale is broader in relation to the standard 303 calibration. People say this doesn't sound the same but the mistake seems to be that they expect the knobs to do the same thing! LOL. I love mine!
yeah, I love mine, too. I recently bought the TT-303 (which I like, too) but noticed immediately - exactly as you say - that the cutoff and env mod potis of the TT have a much smaller scope those of the MB, so working with both at the same is a matter of muscle memory :)
Exactly - you should totally do a video of them both - seriously! I'm tired of all these reviewers saying it is 'nothing like' a TB-303, or 'has its own voice'... maybe the old versions of the MB33 are different? Also, the acidvoice website puts all the MB33s in the same category, and the recording there of the MB33 (which one?) is abysmally bad.
Its a clone so it have a 303ish sound, but cant do all the tricks sadly, as far not a single company was able to reproduce that original sound. Theyre all good untill you hear a real one... ;/ And yes, those rack MAM's had a different sound.
+Shimanski Beats kool man...you know you can also achieve the acid sound with the electibe....If you use a saw wave on mono...and filter...check my channel when you get a chance....bless
+reaz allykhan Unfortunately I can't. The Electribe Sampler doesn't have the TB-filter emulation that the regular Electribe has. Sure, I'll check your channel!
+Shimanski Beats okay...sorry I thought you had the emx2 there...that's the reason I pick the emx instead of the esx...They loaded good pcm files in it
IMO overdrive/distortion and delay are most important; chorus and reverb are also nice for 303-sounds. There are tons of pedals and multi-FX units out there.
Good morning, as always very good his performances, however I would like to know if the friend could make a short tutorial on how to sequence the Electribe Sampler with various midi instruments, I realized that the master instrument is your Electribe, wanted to see the friend produce the arpeggios, the chords, the bassline from Electribe and direct to midi outs. Could you contemplate us with your knowledge? Thanks!
still cant find anybody showing off any deeper sounds out of this for droning etc. - can it handle that? any chance you could make a video showing off that side of the spectrum?
thanks for your comment. Honestly, this thing is supposed to work as a 303-clone. For drone sounds it is not suitable for at least two important reasons: it has a rather short VCA decay (which you can't regulate other than with the accent) so after a short while there won't be any sound unless you retrigger. Second, it has no LFO which allows for the vibrant periodic modulations that are necessary for good drones.
Hi:) Is there any knob position that doesn't sound good or GREAT OR AWESOME on the MB33? Honest question...this or ABL3? In this video the MB33 sound is better than a TB303
thanks for your comment, I'd say it's always a matter of taste when something sounds good or great, and I do think that there are definitely knob position combinations where the accent sounds very good, and some where it doesn't sound thaaaaat good. Similarly I found with that with different distortion pedals you get different sweet spots for the MB33 knob positions.
hey man, great demo, thanks for posting. I myself own a electribe and want to purchase a mb33 (aside from my x0x/tt303/tb3), but I'm asking myself how do you arrange/sequence the accent en slide from the electribe? grtz
thank you! So you already have a x0x, a TT-303 and a TB3? Then I'm not so sure if the MB33 will add much. On the other hand, for the money it sounds great. The accent can be triggered with velocity values higher than 120 and you toggle the slide with gate=tie in the step editor.
Jeah, I know I'm allready well privided with the existing gear concerning the acid bleebs. But for the money it's worth a try ;-).... I'm just very curious about it, it sound very good! thanks for replying!! greetz from Amsterdam
+MrFricoco just got it a about a week ago. But I know the original MB33 which a friend owned back in the days, and we used it a lot in joint tracks. Can definitely recommend getting one if you want an analog 303-clone and don't need a sequencer. They only cost € 140 new (don't know for outside EU, though)
+MrFricoco I have so many things on the wishlist, and this list gets longer the more videos of others in the community. But there are all these natural limits: time, money, space......
Ya, the list is getting longer, but I like that it is small. I'm only going into mini and microsynths now. Easy to carry type stuff. First right now for me is getting the volca FM, when it comes out that is. I just got the volca keys finally last week too. Are they still in production? I can't seem to find anything about that synth in my current country or anything about that company either.
+MrFricoco This Retro desktop version has been released only in oct 2015. The firm is rather small, and I just saw on their website that they have exclusive deals with the large German traders Thomann and Musicstore, so I'm not sure if it can be ordered from outside Europe.
1:55 the last acid "screaming" clean and overdriven, when changing the resonance, is it possible to have all the notes changed except the last screaming acid ?
you can only change the resonance by hand, so in principle, you could turn up the resonance for every individual note, but you cannot automate that. What you can automate via midi, though, is the accent, so for every velocity value above 120 (or somewhere in the vicinity) you trigger the accent. The accent rises the cutoff and VCA for that note, but not the resonance
Is it worth getting even with a volca bass? I think so, this sounds a lot more authentic when trying to replicate a 303 than the volca but I think they would be fun together. What were you sequencing it with?
+joeboygsxr If you want a (rather close) 303-sound, I think the MB-33 is a good and cheap choice. I also have the Volca Bass and like it for a lot of reasons (for instance 3 oscillators) but it hardly works for 303-sounds - the filter sounds completely differently, and worst of all, there is no accent. But surely: they work nicely together in any setup. I sequence the MB 33 with the Electribe Sampler
each of the 16 tracks sends the events on its dedicated midi channel. Tr 1= ch1, tr2 = ch2 etc. To my knowledge you can't change that. So if you want to control the MB on channel 1 or 2 you need to put midi notes on track 1 or 2, respectively.
Nice but you should get another distortion box than that lame Line 6 POd , it sounds too digital. check acidoo's channel he tried a lot of distortion stomboxes with 303 clones.
thanks for your comment! The Pod was the only distortion device I had at hand at that moment when I made the demo, for my music I normally use analog OD or distortion pedals
Especially like the deep bass sounds this thing can get 😎
Wow! Fantastic sound! Now I want MAM MB 33 retro.
thanks for your comment! Not my job do advertise for them, but I can definitely recommend it. I use it in almost all of my music since I bought it
This little box seems to be the right thing for acid tunes. Great demo!
+marcus kautz Thanks Marcus!
Great acid lines, also authentic acid machine lol
thanks for your comment!
Awesome! Love from Scotland
thx Paul H
Man that sounds good and around the same price as a Volca!
Hi 😃I am subscriber number 2020 - in the year 2020! great work! sounds cool👍
Thanks Matse for the kind words! I hope i get subscriber 2021 earlier than a year from now!
Shimanski Beats 🙂 this will be no problem
very nice sound !
+eldritch1969 thanks for watching! The MB33 has a great basic sound
Superb demo, thanks man 👍🏻
+BeatGrooveRhythm thanks a lot!
Nu komm ich wieder ins Grübeln :D Glaub muss mir die MB 33 Retro definitiv näher anschauen

i love my mam mb retro
thanks for your comment! Have fun with your MB!
Shimanski Beats / Shure i will wish you fun to with yours. i need an fx for it which would you rate to buy.
IMO overdrive/distortion and delay are most important; chorus and reverb are also nice for 303-sounds. There are tons of pedals and multi-FX units out there.
Nice!
I rocked out.
thanks for your comment! If you rocked out already to a demo, what happens when you listen to real music ;) ?

Great vid.
How is the accent triggered - via velocity?
Thanks for watching! Yes, velocity values of 120 and higher trigger the accent
Finally! a cheaper 303 clone! :) COOL !
+edoardo belinci thanks for watching! Yes, cheap but still great analog sound
still cant find anybody showing off any deeper sounds out of this for droning etc. - can it handle that? any chance you could make a video showing off that side of the spectrum?

Shimanski Beats thanks for that - im totally new to bass synth land.
Well done !!! Like !!!

Fat sound on that thing, with distortion and without! Definitely a sick piece of gear to have! How long have you had it?

Mmmm, that's very tempting. I'll have to add it to my wishlist. Not sure when I'd be able to get it, but hopefully someday soon.

+Ant GM thanks!
1:55 the last acid "screaming" clean and overdriven, when changing the resonance, is it possible to have all the notes changed except the last screaming acid ?
I am not sure I understand your question. Do you mean: keeping the resonance down in all notes except for the barking one with the accent?
Shimanski Beats Yes, keeping the last note unchanged and affect just the previous ones
you can only change the resonance by hand, so in principle, you could turn up the resonance for every individual note, but you cannot automate that. +Shimanski Beatyeah, ill probably have to sequence one from a midi software sequencer or maybe a korg sq1
Acid pur i like it.
+Baer „Cello“ Marcel thx!
Hey how did you connect the mb33 to the electribe?
a simple midi connection: electribe midi out - MB33 midi in
Shimanski Beats well I know that but how to choose a channel on the e2? If I set the mb33 on 1 or 2 then how do I choose ch 1 or 2 on the e2? Cheers
each of the 16 tracks sends the events on its dedicated midi channel. Tr 1= ch1, tr2 = ch2 etc. To my knowledge you can't change that. So if you want to control the MB on channel 1 or 2 you need to put midi notes on track 1 or 2, respectively.
In terms of sound it's definitely has that Roland vibe. Maybe more of an SH than TB though. Close enough anyway.
thanks for your comment! You're not the only one to point the resemblance to the SH's. IMO it sounds rather close and works nicely in the mix.
Thick sounds!
+Metatron's Cube: yes, and only with one oscillator; particularly the square sounds really fat
