    Thanks for watching!
I met Joyce and Abigail when they were just weeks old. There were five siblings total and all were were born dead from emergency cesarean section. Staff from Cheetah Experience (CE) and their top notch vet revived all five of them. They are all alive today but have some medical issues due to missing moms colostrum and milk. So they have weakened immune systems because of it.
CE does not own Joyce and Abigail but want to. They have setup a Global Giving fund for that purpose. If you can afford to donate to help secure their future at CE, staff and myself would be most thankful. The plan is to have the two sisters part of the breeding program at CE and help save this species. Here is the link to the fund raiser.
    Summary
Joyce and Abigail were born by means of an emergency cesarian in 2016. They were part of a breeding loan. Our main focus is the conservation of the cheetah. They were actually born dead and after hours of struggle, Dr Sandra Bertram got them to breath. It was a constant struggle with their health. They did not get any colostrum from the mum and therefore had no immune systems. They were looked after 24/7 every day for more than 3 months. We feel it is best for them to stay at our project.
As for me, I enjoyed their company, even though they disliked me at 1st. Yearling cheetahs are my favorite... so curious and playful and into everything. Life is great for them. It took me about three days before I won them over, then they melted over me; treating me like I was their surrogate mother. I gladly fulfilled that role during my internship there; spending days and nights with them. I hope to see them again this year to record their progress.
Here are the details written by CE about Joyce and Abigail's fund raiser....
    Summary

    Challenge
Cheetah Experience is a breeding project, where we use DNA profiles and our International Studbook to make ethical and responsible decisions. In order to maintain genetic diversity, it is necessary to do breeding loans with ethical projects to bring in different blood lines and strengthen the gene pool. Every cheetah counts. We only have 350 cheetahs in protected reserves in South Africa. To sustain that and improve the gene pool we need to put captive bred cheetahs back into the wild.1
    Solution
If we can secure the future of Joyce and Abigail with us, they will be able to breed in another two years, and we can use some of their cubs to put in protected reserves and ensure that the cheetah numbers will increase. The cheetah has been driven out of 91 percent of its historic range. They once roamed nearly all of Africa and much of Asia. In Asia fewer than 50 individuals are remaining in one isolated pocket. Please help us to contribute to the cheetahs in protected areas.
    Long-Term Impact
If we cannot get the cheetah numbers up in the protected reserves by releasing more non related cheetahs the number will decline, more inbreeding will happen and eventually the cheetah gene pool will become weaker and the possibility is that we can loose them all in nature. Everybody wants to have these majestic endangered animals in the wild, and so we do this by breeding cheetahs with different genes to ensure the long term goal of saving the cheetahs in the wild.

If you cannot afford to donate, I don't want you to. Instead... support the cheetah by other means. It does NOT have to be money, but awareness, your time, or simply educating someone about cheetah conservation. Sharing!

Hehe, "Dolph" is a contraction of wolf and, sometimes noble. Adolf is more clear about it, but that name has a bit of a connotation :P.
Still, if you like some degree of "irony" a noble wolf is friends (and surrogate mother) to noble cats.

This typical remark is too general. Mostly heard from dog persons. Have a wolf and we will talk again. Cats are more complex what is here clearly shown. There is a reason, they change of behavior, friendly, suspicious till almost aggressive is logical, they have to be always on guard because of the fact that the most vulnerable in the big cat group. So the more careful. From a domestic cat, it is what you make out of here/him. My cat is my companion with a wild streak. He has a very big area to hunt play and so one. But at night untypical, there we are, for other cats, he comes home when I call. When I come home, he is saying hello with a very special sound. I could write a book, only I am too lazy, also from persons who pretend they know cats. Also here on UA-cam, when I see that people bath there cats, I get mad. A cat has a natural "cleaner" by them self, you can destroy them when you bath them.

Even with regular cats... they must be introduced right. Domestic Cat Society is almost identical to Lion Society. Lions will go to war within their own species when one pride meets another... especially the males. Keeping them separate is the only way to keep the Cheetah safe.

Faiz it was done with a tiger. A lion raised by a tiger followed her mom around all the time and helped her raise further generations of tigers. Really interesting since tigers are usually solitary and don’t help other tigers raise cubs. Also they usually don’t trust other tigers, so it’s kinda weird that the mom allowed her lioness daughter to form a pride of 2 with her.

Obviously, but we could have had great surplus amount of food (which we do), but if it wasn't for love and compassion (which we still struggle to feel towards tens of millions of our fellow human beings that die each year from starvation related diseases) - that food would just remain there and not (which it does, in this competition-based principles, that we choose to base our society on).

Dolph, how ineffably sweet this is, especially when, at night, the first female started licking you and then laid down on you and the second one did the same! My heart squeezed! But how do you have any skin left??

That is SO nice of you to save and donate. Please be sure it is funds you can spare. I do the same.
The cubs don't have so sharp tongues like an adult, but the bigger they get, the worse it feels as the spines begin to separate space between them. The side of my ear bled a little when Joyce was chewing my ear, not from her teeth but her licking. She was gentle.

Dolph C. Volker I didn't know that about their tongues. It was wonderful to see your knowledge about Cheetahs stood you in good stead in lying down and watching their body language to take your cues. You really belong among them Dolph. It's good for them and for you--you need each other!
P.S. I Love Your opening to this vid, with the book, etc.!

I did this in South Africa on a trip -- I went in a pen at a Cheetah conservation facility outside of Port Elizabeth and was able to spend time with two young adult Cheetahs after being introduced by their handler. Cheetahs are endangered and need to be protected. If you are not afraid of them and know how to deal with cats, they are the most amazing creatures. Super friendly and affectionate. If they do not like you they will let you know right away! But I got to cuddle and talk to them, and pet them for about 30 minutes -- simply amazing! Like friendly house cats but the size of 12 year old humans!

I hear that colostrum is not important to a child's development but these animals show just how important it is.

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  4 роки тому

I plan on collecting colostrum from birthing cheetahs I own (minus what is needed for her cubs) and hoping to sustain it for cubs that don't have lactating mothers, like orphan or rejected cubs. It is VERY important and to continue to receive mother's milk up to 8 months old. Collect mothers milk too.
You have to have very calm trusting cheetah moms to do this. I know another project that has done this.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!
