    All but the cheapest no-name camcorders *do* have full manual controls available, such as exposure, white balance, shutter speed, etc. Even the entry-level Sony, Panasonic, and JVC camcorders that sell for around $150 have manual controls available.
    And you're comparing a $2500 DSLR to a $300 camcorder, so of course the DSLR is going to have better performance. But if you compare it to a professional camcorder in the same price range, the pro camcorder is going to win, hands down, because its lens and image sensor are specifically designed for recording video, not taking photos.
    Even a budget of $1000 is enough to get you a prosumer camcorder that delivers broadcast-quality 1080p60 video with attachments for an external microphone, headphones, remote control tripod, etc. And for handheld use, camcorders have much better image stabilization than DSLRs.

      vwestlife This video was targeted towards people who would be looking to purchase at a consumer level, not spending $1000. At the $500 range, I do believe DSLRs are going to offer the better video, at the cost of being a bit more difficult.

      ***** It depends on the production style of the user. Almost any camera can do well with a simple "talking head" video like this -- even an iPhone! In that case the money is better spent on studio equipment like lighting, green screen, microphone/audio recorder, etc. It's the "out in the field" videos where the differences in camera/camcorder design and user requirements really become important.

      vwestlife I agree with both comments you made. I have a nikon d800 (4000$ when i bought it) and a canon vixia hfg30 (1500$) and i always go with the camcorder for video. The dept of field argument is not valid imo since shooting people or events at 1.4 is useless. Might use it for b roll but thats it. Setup time, weight, stabilization etc is way easier on a prosumer camcorder. Also camcorders have autofocus. Sound is crap in the nikon, a bit better in the canon so i use a tascam dr-40 with an assortment of mics when i want good results.

      +Joël Madé - I totally agree with your comments. The camcorder is the easiest and fastest way for shooting run-and-gun video. The DSLR was not designed to be used as a camcorder, since it was an afterthought adapted later on. Also, many of today's DSLR's cannot record continuously beyond 29 min due to the manufacturers complying with the European Union to tax cameras as camcorders if it records 30 min continuous or more. This is a major problem when recording live performances.

  • @SNORKYMEDIA
    @SNORKYMEDIA 9 років тому +19

    in Europe DLSRs cant film for longer than 30mins most DLSRs don't even let you film that long anyway as the sensor overheats...

      in Europe the EU breurocraps had decided that a "normal" camera should only be able to record 29mins of video and video cams are unlimited but taxed more. It is a tax thing here - which is bollocks...but I do believe some DLSRs are restricted due to sensor temperature. I need cams that can record forever....

    • @justFiji
      @justFiji 9 років тому

      SNORKYMEDIA Why would they tax you on the length of the video. And also you technically can't get a camera that could record *_forever_* because it would run out of space or charge.

    • @SNORKYMEDIA
      @SNORKYMEDIA 9 років тому

      Dont try to find any sense in this tax law....the EU are good at shit like that - but that IS a fact. I think the idea is that if it records for longer than 29 mins then it is classed as a video camera not a stills camera and thus MORE TAX....why a video camera needs to be taxed more - god knows. Yes I realise that a camera wont run forever - I was being ironic...doh.

    DSLR set ups are great if you are planing to just stand in one spot the whole time. Or if you have a friend or crew to help film you while moving or doing things. But if you plan on filming events and yourself with no help DSLRs are not that great.
    Wish there was more videos about the best camcorder/DSLR for people who want to do mobile vlogging.

    for my videos, I went with halogen 150 watt bulbs that I screwed into ceramic brooder clamp lamps. each one of those bulbs cost me about $8.00 and about $10.00 for the brooder lamps. I use one over head, two to three up close, and one lamp angled about twelve feet away. with the clamp lamps you can also attach colored gels to them to accent the mood.
    I've been shooting my videos with a fuji fine pix camera, but I don't like the auto focus. and I don't think it can be turned off. what I don't like about it, is the lack of an external mic jack. so, I recently purchased a cannon vixia r500 camcorder that does have one. hopefully, I'll be able to record my spoken word poetry show without having to couple this camera to a digital recorder (which I do possess), because I don't have the available free time to do that much post production editing.
    currently, I am using the (advanced) UA-cam video editor. do you have any recomedations for easy to use video editors for pc? I am using an hp elite book running windows 2007.

      Hi, I am kind of in the same boat. Except I had a very limited budget. I made a tester channel, then will begin my legitimate channel once I feel ready to make videos. I bought a Canon R700 with bundle, and it cost me about $320. I am very happy with it honestly, but I am a bit worried if it will stand up to up close footage, like doing an ASMR video, or fire, etc.
      My goal is up close, lots of light, and maybe some medium light.

    There really is a much bigger difference in video quality between a camcorder and a DSLR than I thought there would be. Camcorders are easy to work with but the image is much flatter, the colors are more dull and "washed out" looking (regardless of any settings that can be changed) The texture of the image from a DSLR is just better.
    I do like the camcorder for filmiing things I'm working with up close in my hands or on table, because they are so easy to work with and do show good detail.

    Thank you for your very informative show. Yes, never thought about
    improving indoor shots with flood lights. I have a Canon A550 cheap ($125)
    PowerShot point n shoot camera that I shoot not just still photos but at times,
    a video. It has some stabilization which I think is adequate to shoot a stationary
    objects but not for say, a running cat/dog. Yes, i've noticed that even for a still
    photo, when a light cond. is a bit dark (like 15 minutes B4 sundown outside),
    the photo turns out less focused and grainny. The flood lgt should improve it.
    Of course, the built-in flash makes the photo sharper but since the camera's flash
    control is automatic, no manual, i can't improve it.

      Yes. But go for the Vixia HF G40 if you want a camcorder. $1100 on Canon online store, $1018 on Amazon and in B & H. One of the best consumer camcorders out there, its sensor is much bigger than most other camcorders (but still far smaller than even an ASP-C).

I know nothing about photography or cameras but I'd like a semi-professional look and some creative freedom. Definitely think I will go with a DSLR. Now I just have to decide between my top three choices as of yet, the T3i the T4i or the D3200. I saw that the T3i only has one cross type auto focus point and the T4i has like 9 or something. Do you think this will make a noticeable difference if I am filming myself in a generally stationary position? Thanks again, -ryan

    I wonder who this video is aimed at? Reasonably price cams' have numerous manual controls. So, you're not comparing like with like. If you just want a point-and-shoot, then you won't really be interested budgeting for extra lights. Is this video for holidaymakers, wedding producers, indy film makers, who? Depending on what you want to do with your with your camera/camcorder would decide what is the best investment.

  • @dotcarmine
    @dotcarmine 8 років тому

    That's funny. I have a D3200 and shot video. The problem is the camera lens hunts a lot and puts lens focusing noise on the footage. So now you need an external mic. You can manual focus, but manually focusing on the D3200 is difficult. It's hard to see the exact focus point on the screen and most lens have a tiny focus ring at the end of the lens.
    I bought a Canon HF M500 for $85 and it makes wonderful footage, even in low light. The lens is f1.8. It has great bokeh and the Power IS smooths out even walking steps. It has manual control also. You can mix an external mic with the internal mic for ambience and you can control the volume manually. The only budget DSLR I would consider for video is the Canon T6i.
    For some reason, you are sold on the DSLR and your solution is lighting. I agree. Lighting is everything. All you need is decent lighting and a decent smart phone.
    Best...

    Thank you so much. I foolishly thought a video camera would be better for videos. I have a Nikon P7700 and am very frustrated with the video quality. I'm generally using it to film animals inside or out and active with me moving along with them. My main gripe with it is the auto white balance sucks. I can tweek and save settings for it but if I'm going in and out a lot or filming in the woods where it may go from full sun to gloomy shade it's hard to switch.
    What can you do about light colored animals bleaching out? Had this issue with all cameras, especially outside. It's often over cast here and that makes the issue worse. I could get a Pentax K-50 body kinda cheap and already have a pentax lens but it has that issue with video also and no auto focus while filming video another negative.

  • @jonathanmatthew5631

    One thing you didn't really go into is the stabilization when shooting videos. If used as a family video recording when going out on a vacation, a lot of video will be shot while walking and sometimes running. Can a DSLR give you a good video while walking/running? This is the only reason why im not getting the Samsung NX1 right now and opting to get either the Panasonic XV870 or Sony AX33. If only the NX1 had their stabilization then im sold....

    I have just found this video. Whilst it probably generalising, I do feel that it offers a basic no-frills guide to camcorder vs dslr. A sort of support video if you like, mainly because most would-be camcorder buyers probably already own a video capture device eg smartphone or digital camera, whereas I doubt if this is true the other way round! The only other significant point is that of ergonomics. Most camcorders have shoot and zoom buttons in line with thumb and forefinger. They are actually DESIGNED for long-term holding (I mean anything from seconds to several minutes without a tripod)! Digital cameras can be a pain, they are NOT physically designed for movie taking especially if moving your fingers to adjust zoom/wide makes the camera judder (and this is from experience!). A good video and well done! Best Wishes, Ian

      do NOT get a nikon for video, if you want a dslr go for a 70d, 77d or 80d these all have cmos dual pixel autofocus systems which is wayyyy better than the nikons light dependent autofocus system. im torn between the hfg40 and the 70d atm. with the lenses i want for the 70d the price will add up to the hfg40. and weight.. hfg40 would be lighter and easier to run and gun film with. and dont go full frame its useless for video unless u want wider angle footage.

    Here is my aim. I am going on vacation to my homeland in the U.S Virgin Islands. I plan to then go for a visit to the British Virgin Islands next door. I want to shoot scenery nonstop. I want to shoot action while on the ferry and shoot video of the surroundings, beach activities, riding around the hillsides, etc. I CANNOT be in a situation where, after 15-30 minutes (from a DSLR), I cannot shoot anymore video and have no computer around to unload the video to clear space on my card. I want to document my trip, video family talking, people doing their jobs that I can interview, etc. To me, that sounds like a job for a Camcorder, right?
    In addition, when I get back, I want to set up a UA-cam Channel to do a radio (with video) show that can run 30 minutes or more. In such a STILL scene, a DSLR would work fine, but again, the minutes limitation, right?
    As for the shortcomings of a camcorder, I understand the Panasonic HC-W580K overcomes all of them from low light situations to autofocus for it's relatively cheap price. I understand it also shoots VERY sharp.
    NOTE: I have a Canon T2i for photos, by the way.

    Delighted to watch your video. At last someone is talking in favour of camcorders. These days camcorders are not even in the reckoning of the film makers. I have a Sony SR 10 which shoots very well in good light. The only problem is that I have a lot of baggage carrying lights for shoots which can be completely done away with in case of a full frame DSLR. But on the brighter side, my clients go head over heals when they see large lights and the set up. No extra lights on full frame DSLR might disappoint my clients no end. ;)

    I am looking for a new camera to shoot my gardening and nature videos. Most of these are outdoors in natural light in the UK year round. The conditions will vary between grey and overcast to bright sunshine. The subject matter will include lush greens and earthy brows as well as bright colours from flowers. I have very little experience with cameras but I am reasonably bright and not afraid of technology. I have around £1000 to spend. Would you recommend a DSLR or Camcorder in those circumstances. I would be interested what you think, and whether there is a model that you recommend.

      If you have that much to spend, the canon g7 X is a perfect camcorder that is comparable to DSLR quality. It's extremely popular among a lot of the best known youtubers, but I think it's a little pricey for a small camcorder but the video does look amazing for a little easy to use camcorder.

    I think this video is spot on. At least, it is for me. I actually started making videos with a decent webcam, and it wasn't long before I could see that it won't work at all with a green screen. Weird stuff happens. So I got a super cheap JVC camcorder and although it's 1080p, I simply cannot get a good chroma key. When I see the videos other people make, especiallly after they get a good camera, they are so sharp and their keys are perfect, and I'm lusting after a decent camera. Further, I need a swing-out LCD so I can see where I am in the shots, given I film myself (which the JVC has) and a remote would be really nice. I'm thinking Canon T5i, but I'm a long way from affording it.

    I have a question. Please answer me. Can I use a camcorder and shoot videos in open air, during the early morning time? After a Sunrise - an hour past or so? Do you think that should work and I can avoid getting into a DSLR? How can I record my voice better then? In the open, the voice is going to go for a toss!! Please help...

    The only thing wrong with this video is that you didn't show what the DSLR camera's perspective was with low light conditions (without the lights on).

    Hi Joe - one glaring FEATURE of owning a DSLR (maybe too obvious to mention) that you didn't mention is along with higher quality video, you also have a kick-ass very high quality camera. I will be the first to admit that the new cameras on high end smart phones are incredible BUT you can make that argument for VideoCams too. Like you said about DSLR's higher quality BOTH video and camera, ability to change lenses and filters too for that matter enabling you many GREAT F/X. I would say the DSLR is the best way to go and you also gave a great tip of let the RICH guys buy the latest models. You can often find N.O.S. (new old stock) going back as much as 2 models at almost half what the latest DSLR model cost...

    Thank you for that review it was on point. IT sure made me know for sure that I don't Want to waste my money on a DSL camera. I used to be a camcorder girl because it was simple and easy to use and the fact that I didn't take photography classes so it would be a waste for me to not really use all the options a DSL has to offer.

    Not to mention being a pretty decent video camera in not the primary function of a DSLR vs Camcorder. DSLR like those from Nikon or Canon are primarily for still photography and are a photographers dream. they just also happen to do great video. but for DSLR Video is a bonus feature.

  • @TheWishDragon

    It depends on what you want, camcorders are good for being out and about, DSLRs are nice for a good static set up, recording times are not limited too. :)

      Sam Adolph *No... did you not watch the video? Camcorders don't have a lot of features and more or less, are ready to go straight out the box for beginners. DSLR is a bit more finicky for the novice and average user and have a higher chance of user error, but for those that are capable and experienced in adjusting the camera settings, they would prefer to use a DSLR. I'm not sure what this has to do with ugly, plasticky and cheap feeling.*

    if u record video in limit distant u cab get beautiful depth of field. imagine if u record a moving car toward u it cannot track like camcorder.
    i recommend u use bridge instead cause it can do both and price not too high

    I have a Crappy Camcorder from sony that costs 30-50 dollars, would it be worth it to upgrade to a d3100 or d3300 DSLR The video from the camcorder is very blurry too

    • @echoforceoverwatchcoaching5874
      @echoforceoverwatchcoaching5874 7 років тому

      They are NOT that expensive the GH4 that people like Techsource, linustechtips, and Paul's hardware use it just over 1000 dollars and the only pro camara really around your price range is like the FS5 or FS7 and those are NOT DSLR's The D 3300 can be found for 200-400 dollars

    • @stephen4p
      @stephen4p 7 років тому

      I think the D3300 takes great video for the price but step it up to $500 and you can get the Pansonic FZ300K, and be able to record 4k video.

    • @echoforceoverwatchcoaching5874
      @echoforceoverwatchcoaching5874 7 років тому

      yeah but i dont have beefy enough pc to edit 4k video maybe i could downscale to 1080 though

    • @stephen4p
      @stephen4p 7 років тому

      RTC Gaming you can downscale it to 1080p, then bring it back and render it at 4k the video for youtube. if you don't think you can handle 4k video, then the d3300 is a great camera.

  • @ultramancer6720
    @ultramancer6720 8 років тому

    Your price points are a bit off, cheapest bundle for cheapest model of a new Canon EOS you're looking at about $500, you can get a Canon Vixia HF R60 for about half that price brand new. $100 low end aren't name brands, they're like Jazz, GE, Emerson, etc..
    Used is risky business given how much can potentially be wrong with the camera you're buying, ESPECIALLY where a DSLR is concerned, and auctions usually drive up to not be that great of a deal considering what you're buying is used.
    But overall this video was helpful.
