Here's Why The PowerA Wireless Gamecube Controller For The Switch Surprised Me

  • The Wireless PowerA Gamecube Controller is out at the end of the month and is set up to more so compete with the Switch Pro Controller instead of the Gamecube controller on the Nintendo Switch. This controller keeps the same form factor that the original Gamecube controller had and makes the whole thing wireless through blue tooth while adding all of the necessary buttons to operate Switch games. I like what I see with this controller and I hope PowerA continues to build from this controller going forward.

AFAIK the reason they no longer use analog is because of some patent troll suing them way back in the Wii era. Sony and Microsoft likely pay royalties to keep analog triggers on their controllers.

    to fix a drift issue:
    Go into your calibration
Make sure the blue dot is in middle, if it drifts force it to be into the center and hold it there
Press the power button on the controller
When you turn the controller back on do not move the stick an inch but click it so you choose it for calibration again

Really good controller. I actually use it way more than I originally thought. I bought it for Smash but find myself using it for all other Switch games. Drifting does happen. My quick fix (maybe I'm lucky) is to change the batteries with new ones. If they are new I usually press the top button (to turn on/off controller) a few times. Usually that fixes it. I just hope I never get severe drift like other players get.

I tried this controller myself from a friend. If you want the exact shape of the controller, this isn't for you. It may sound OCD-ish but when I felt it, the analog sticks felt weird compared to the original controller, the grips don't feel flush for the hands compared to the original controller and it feels a bit sharp when pressing down the triggers from what I can remember. If you want a wireless solution from the switch to yourself easily but use the same controller you're used to, the 8bitdo wireless adapter is your best bet, even though you are using the wire from your controller

  • @Light-Rock97

Dude, I just got one to play on PC. RetroArch picked it up right away, and so did Dolphin. The two buttons under start and select are recognized as extra buttons and can be mapped in RetroArch to anything, like save states, fast forward etc, and that's awesome. I even fired up Street Fighter X Tekken, and again, works just fine, as d-input, and the two extra buttons are there too and can be used.
I didn't have to jump trough any hoops to connect it either. Very straight forward. I was actually surprised that there's no ports at all on this thing, so no wired is a no go, kind of a shame, but hey, wireless has been working just fine. Already ordered a second one.
Oh, and something bizarre. The triggers on mine have no travel, and feel no different to the shoulder buttons. Maybe they've changed it? I'd love if they were analogs, but if they have to be digital, this is how it should be, and it's super strange that the early models went with the long travel.

I have 3 of Power A's controllers. 1 is a standard wireless replacement for the Pro controller, 1 is a standard wired replacement of the Pro controller and then the last one is a wired version of this controller and I think they did a slight change to some of the internals after they got feed back because I got mine relatively recently (in 2020) and the ZL and ZR triggers now have basically no travel. The standard wireless controller is nice (has Zelda print on it) and it's a enhanced version so it has 3 additional buttons with one being a program button and the other 2 being the programmable buttons and it has motion control support so you can use it for BOTW's motion functions as well as motion driving in Mario Kart 8. The wired standard controller is an older model that I got with my switch around the time this video came out (a couple of months before) because I got Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and I hate the Joycons and it's held up over the year and x amount of months I've had it and still works fine. The wireless stuff now syncs up with bluetooth on a PC now easily compared to when this came out as I use my switch pro controllers for Wii games that supported the Classic Pro controller on Dolphin. I have no real issues other than I do notice the lack of the analogue functionality at times and it makes me a little sad that it's not a perfect experience but I get to use a controller that is close enough and is decent quality. Had the standard wired controller since August 2018 (got it with my switch and BOTW), had the wireless version since November of 2019 (on sale due to Black Friday) and then the Gamecube variant since February of this year. A friend did get the same wired controller as me and he's getting stick drift but idk how well he took care of it considering he kept some old PC parts in a ziploc bag (made me cringe to see it, that poor dead CPU).

I personally like the extra travel distance on the triggers. One problem I have with Smash is accidental air dodges because I tend to clench my controller. With the analog functionality of the original/smash gamecube controllers, it would air dodge when I (accidentally) pressed the button even slightly. With this design, that won't be an issue anymore, since I have to blatantly press the button to do that.

I have a PS4 controller I’ve had for a few years that gets like 5 hours of battery, and guess what I can’t easily swap it out. But on my Xbox I use rechargeable eneloop AA and I can keep 2 on the charger and immediately swap them out when they run out after like 12-16 hours. And if they start to lose charge after 4-5 years I can just easily go recycle them and buy new ones for $25 and they’ll last another 4-5 years. A controller with a built in battery just eventually becomes dead weight plastic

The wired ones are great if you want to have a couple of controllers laying around for friends, they are very good and cheap. The wireless one is a harder sell since they're so close in price to the pro controller, they also lack features the pro controller has like NFC and a very good rechargeable battery.
If you have rechargeable AA's go for the wireless one, if not then save a bit more for a pro controller, you'll save up more going that route. Now if you want spare controllers for friends look no further than the wired ones, perfect price to performance ratio.

If you're trying to make a pixel perfect movement, and the controller is shaking, that means you're unable to keep the analog stick exactly where you want it. Rumble is inherently flawed for high level play because it inhibits your ability to input motions correctly. A rumbling controller can be the difference between a tilt and a smash. It's also true in FPS games - Try sniping while your controller is shaking. Your aim is also going to be shaky. It does more harm than good. If you ever go to a Smash tournament you probably won't have access to rumble to begin with - They almost never plug in the rumble side of the USB cable for the Gamecube adapter. It's pretty universally agreed to be a bad idea.

Built-in batteries are antiquated and counter-intuitive. The best battery solution (imho) is to have AA or AAA batteries you are able to swap out.
Step 1: You buy rechargeable batteries w/charger. (4-pack)
Step 2: When you have the two batteries you have been using eventually die, you swap them out with the other two that are already charged, and then charge the used ones. This way, you’ll never have to wait for anything to charge and you’ll always have fully charged batteries on deck, ready to use!

For example: Mario Odyssey uses B to jump and Y to attack, and Zelda uses Y to attack and B to sprint. Those will sadly be very uncomfortable with the GameCube buttons, and I doubt many games like this have control configuration options (Zelda has the option to swap B and X, not much use here...)

So I ordered one of these a while ago, only just got it a couple of days ago. I know the reviewer on this channel wasn't a big fan of the triggers, but I really like them. They're super responsive, but at the same time it is nearly impossible to accidentally hit them. I play smash competitively, and on several occasions I have lost an entire game by accidentally hitting the triggers of the joycons/pro controller whilst in the air, causing a lethal air dodge. The fact that these have so much space to push in before clicking is really helpful, and it isn't inconvenient at all.
Beyond that, I'll leave a little review for anyone interested.
The controller is super comfortable, with a very similar feel to holding a normal GC controller. The buttons are all very responsive, without being as sensitive as the joycon/pro controller buttons (that is, you can run your finger along with a decent amount of force without pushing the buttons in, unlike the Joycon/pro controller). There is very low input lag - Seeing little-to-no difference between your average GC controller. In fact, its likely faster due to the fact that it doesn't need an adapter. The extra bumper is nice if you want to play with an aerial reverse layout, but it isn't super helpful otherwise. It has all the usual benefits of a GC controller, such as ridged analog stick circles (or rather octogon), and the smash-friendly layout. It also seems to be very durable, although I haven't had it for long so I'll update later if it dies on me.
TL;DR. Very good alternative for a GC controller, especially for people who can't dock their switch often. If you were interested in this at all, I highly recommend it - Especially for fellow smash players (its very comfy).

Is this Frost, the same player who plays Richter Belmont at tournaments? Also, does the controller have as much sturdiness and actuation as the classic Gamecube controller as well as being able to be charged if it runs out of power? Should it be wireless or wired?

    • @frost9681
      @frost9681 5 років тому

@@knealdan2mesee655 Firstly, no. I went by the username Frost before I started playing Smash, but I main Dedede/Yoshi.
In terms of sturdiness, it feels very similar to that of a normal Gamecube controller. Keep in mind I've had it less than a week, so it could still be less durable over time than a normal GC, but as of now, it seems very similarly durable and responsive.
It takes 2 AA batteries to run, so as long as you have batteries the power doesn't matter too much. Alternatively, you could invest in some rechargeable batteries, however, it does seem to have pretty good battery life.
And lastly, I prefer the fact that its wireless as it has faster input. A normal GC controller needs an adapter, which adds input lag, and a USB GC controller also needs to go through the dock first, so there's a bit of added input delay as it doesn't go straight to the switch. The Power A controllers, including the Power A GC, have the fastest input speed among controllers (correct me if I'm wrong). Its only a couple of frames faster, if that, so it doesn't matter too much, but it is nice.

Thanks! Are the buttons, C-Stick, and Directional Stick as firm as the Gamecube Controller as well? Was there also a quality with the Gamecube Controller where it allowed analog trigger presses so that it could tell when you pressed a button without completely pressing it down too? This was because I was wondering if this controller had that capability included. All in all, I like this controller as it captures the Gamecube layout with the extra pro-controller buttons no doubt, yet I am glad I can get a better understanding from someone with the controller while I am trying to match the specs and capabilities/capacities between the Power A and the regular Gamecube controller to make sure I do not jump at purchasing a game controller that only emulated the shell of a Gamecube Controller without managing to have gathered or improved on it's complete essence and qualities. I think I will try one of these.
