Ah cus it is good dance music.
It's because the music is a throwback to 80s feel-good melodies powered with a magical energy similar to the tunes from that era. We need to bring it back. Check out Jungle's "Casio," "Time," and "California Heavy" for some equally great music. Cut Copy's "Standing in the Middle of the Field" is similar as well.
It’s called Harmony
It’s in a very specific mode that gives it a timeless pseudo futuristic feel.
I'll try to explain the theory of what's happening here, though I'm not an expert in the matter.
Outside of how the music and arrangement is done so in such as great way, there is a musical element used in this song that creates that feeling of "euphoria".
The song slowly preps you for what it will have you experience. It begins with mostly synth stabs that accent the vocalist's key note, and delineate the framework of the entire song. Eventually, the percussion is added (as expected) to elevate the song and give it a strong beat.
At 0:45 we experience the first chorus. This chorus is kept relatively simple, and the harmonic experience-- while enjoyable-- it's not necessarily out of what we could expect. The bass, harmony and synth lead all work in a way that we can expect. This lays down the foundation that will later be altered and thus creating an bigger impact. Not only that, but the bass "drones" the same notes (mostly B with a few D# notes). This drone effect in music is used to give the listener a sense of "home base"
Imagine this part as looking at some random vortex that showed up in front of you and it's just there. Everything around you is normal, but there's something unique in front of you. All you need to do is step in.
After that first chorus, the song goes into the second verse, this time already supported by drums. A few extra synth hits are used to give color to this verse, but in reality the beat and harmony have already been elevated to as much as you could at this point, given the current framework and resources used/available.
Introducing 3 musical techniques: INVERSIONS, DISSONANCE and MODES
At 1:40, when the chorus plays again, this time the bass does not resolve. Your most standard chord can be represented with these numbers: 1 - 3 - 5. "1" being the "root" and therefore the most "resolving sound". However, in this case, the bass in the chorus is the "3" of that chord (in this case B major). When the lyrics "till we meet again" play, the "again" portion sings the "1" of that B chord. However, the bass is louder and overall much more of a dominating sound, therefore overpowering the chord and telling your brain that there is "dissonance" and it needs resolution.
That bass line continues to go "up" in a diatonic fashion (meaning the notes follow a scale. Think about counting from 1 to 8, and after 8 it starts over again at 1, infinitely)
HOWEVER, the diatonic motion is different to what we were expecting, and it throws us off from an already "unstable" bass line.
The first time we heard the chorus, the song was suggesting that the key as B Major (a very standard, resonant and common key in most music). However, as the bass progresses, it delineates what we could call a Aeolian dominant scale (also known as the Hindu scale, Mixolydian ♭6 , Aeolian major, and melodic major. It contains a few notes that are unexpected to us because of the way it begins.
Imagine going to the grocery store as you normally do. You get your groceries, all at the same location they always are. You buy the food at checkout and leave. But one day, you go to the grocery store and everything seems normal. However, when you get to the checkout line, you have to suddenly kill a mob of zombies in order to be able to process your payment. Starts normal, then it throws you off.
On top of this, once each repetition of the chorus is over, it never resolves. At the very end, the bass is removed. This leaves you with a sense of being released into the vacuum of space because the only thing grounding you to an already unstable bass line is abruptly removed.
